I want to go camping with my family but I have done enough freezing my butt off laying in the mud when I was in the Army. If I go camping I want it to be more like a lodge experience, warm cozy and no big rush. I was thinking about a big canvas tent, the kind that has a wood fuel stove and enough room for cots and a folding table. I see ads for army surplus general purpose tents that are around $400 bucks. I never had anything that nice during my army experience, but they seem pretty substantial. Anyone tried using something like that? |

The Cabelas catalog has a lot of the larger straight wall style tents like that, FYI. |

Ya, putting up large tents by yourself sucks. I have a 4 person dome tent with 15 poles and it takes me forever to set the thing up. Most of the time the people that I'm with have their tents set up and are done eating their dinner before I'm getting the damn rain fly on. But, if you have a few people and are out for a few days the bigger tent is worth it. I second the Cabelas vote. They have some nice gear at good prices. |

My family has one we use out in Montana when we're taking others hunting. small wood stove, room for cots and it lets the city folk rest up. I don't know how much we paid for it (the thing is older than dirt) but I know that spending a little more on the quality will make up for it later. I remember seeing some ads in the back of a western horeseman magazine. good luck |

you should take a look at the dutch tant manufactureres. They build perfect (lightweight) big coton family tents. Take a look at http://www.slee-buitensport.nl http://www.dewaardtenten.nl/ http://www.erdmanschmidt.nl/frameset.html These are good solid handbuilt tents. great!! |

A wall tent can be put up very easily, depending on the system. I have a 5' wall tetn that is up for long periods of time. It is made with angle joints and then the angles are connected with 1" EMT. Pretty heavy. I also have a cylinder stove that can actually heat you out of the tent. It burns wood or coal. The tent in the pic below is a davis tent. I have had springbar (kirkhams) as well. Both are pretty nice. One thing to think about is if you have a local tent and awning company, it might be nice to buy there since they can fix if you have any issues (and tents eventually will). http://www.discoweb.org/briandickens/burrrr.jpg http://www.kirkhams.com/ http://www.davistent.com/ |
