I thought it would be nice to have a shelf ontop of hang from the spare tire.

I once saw this step for short peopel using SUV's that straps around the tire, and lets you step up.

Im thinking similar to that. Nothing I want to set a coller on or anything big, but just another surface to have "stuff" on.

any ideas how I could strap it around the tire?

Okay....

This sounded like a retarded idea at first....

But after our IM converstation I have seen the light, just so everyone else knows the application for this thing would mostly be as a surface for food preperation and other things that require a stable surface (not necessarily for storage which is how I first took this thread)

It seems like a good idea and here is a preliminary plan for how I would go about it, the main question is whether when mounted low enough for the back piece to clear the tire carrier the 'table' would be at a usable height. though even mounted low it would probablly still be better than cutting up food on the ground :-)

From someone who does a lot of camping out to the disco I think this is a good idea and the unit itself would be pretty packable since you could set it in the bottom and just throw stuff on top of it with very little loss of cargo space.

Why not just buy a heavy duty plastic table with the folding legs from Home Depot. The table fits perfect on top.

Plus I sort of like the simplicity of this idea... Its not going to take me very long to tighten down 4 bolts and have it up and running. When I'm camping I usually don't NEED a full size table with legs and everything just a small stable surface off the ground that I can prepare food on before throwing it on the fire. For s

Maybe this will help, maybe not. Look at how a Rhode Gear 2-Bike Rack fits on a rear spare tire. It uses straps (ratcheting would be nice) that go around the tire at two points and pull tight. Use a short board against the tire, like in Carter's above design. It could be strapped to the tire, have lockable hinges at the pivot point (90 degree) and slide out braces for support. This would eliminate the need for bolts and make it easier to install and remove.

Josh actually ran the idea of using a strap by me on IM and I thought it sounded good but was worried about how tight you could make it... Your idea sounds excellent Snowman and provides yet another wonderfull use for winch straps (One of my favorite things in the world to rig stuff with :-))

I would rather have a small tabel and sut it next to the truck. I'm always getting in and out of my cargo area. If I had that shelf thing on my spare tire I would either have to keep clearing the table or I would knock everything off when I shut the cargo door.

True Neal... but it is possible to shut it very slowly without slamming it :-) :-) Like I said the only practicle use I see for it is a sturdy elevated cutting board, I'm not usually getting in the back of the truck while I'm cooking

So guys, Ih ave narrowed it to two ideas...and Going to try them both

first is a shelf, with a peice of 1" webbing that would trap around the tire, and then a "peg leg" if you will, down to the bumper. maybe just a small 1/2 inch dowel would do the trick

also, the other idea is cut a slit in a shelf, a little shy of how wide yoru tire is...basically so you have a rectange hole in the shelf...then just slip it over the tire, and wedge it down as far as it will go.

im trying to figure something out, will check back with you all when i have some pics

What about a pair of oversized "S" hooks. The hooks could be made of square or round tubing. The circumfrance of the top part of the hook would need to be a little larger than the the width of your tire and the bottom would stick out straightand have the board mounted to it.

With the addition of some heavy duty hinges, the whole thing could be foldered up for storage. Also, as it's not actually strapped to the tire, you could lift it off the tire if you wanted to open the door.

FWIW, this how my bike rack fits on my Land Cruiser.

As another idea, I just saw this on the Coleman website. Seems like it could be adapted to strap to the spare tire and is rather cheap.

I use the REI rolling table with four legs. It is OK, but when prepping something that requires a lot of cutting it is a bit wobbly.

This is kinda ghetto, i know. But with it strapped along the back it wedges up against the tire rubber and stays put. For 8 bucks, you cant beat it.
I just used some 1"webbing and some eyelets ( first pic) screwed to the surface. you could even be more ghetto and just drill a hole, put the strapping through and tie a knot on the underside so it doesnt slip through
I know, i mean its along the same lines as carters bed he made, but shit, like i said. it doesnt have to be pretty and expencive to serve a purpose

maybe this will inspire someone to build a better one, but hell, it works for me.

hmmmm...you've got three fat lug nuts sitting right there with nothing to do but hold the spare on...get yourself a sheet of aluminum (less wide than the diameter of the tire), fab an el bracket or two, and put those lugs to work...

Blue, I thought of that once but you could only make it work with steelies because with alloys the lugs don't stick out past the wheel.

well then, you've got two empty holes on that alloy with nothing to do...three empty holes if you pop the center cap off...

Yeh, Me and carter toyed with those ides back and forth on IM...My main concern, was to have something that could pack completely flat and set up quick.
This does just that. Knowbody liked my ghetto shelf? We could call it the CB camp shelf, lol:-)

I thought of some brackets, of course they would have to be metal to support the weight. Then I just figured eventually, after making it more complicated than it needs to be, it wouldnt lay flat anyway
Really, I know this looks like it doesnt work, but it supports a ton of weight and its pretty stable.
BUt keep the ideas commin.

Hey Joshua, I'm still trying to score a deal on one deep dish alloy to round out my set. So my suggestion would be to sell your spare to me and replace it with a steelie. That way you can incorporate Blue's idea of using the lugs for more support. Viola! Everyone's happy.

Hey art...LOL
Thats a goood one brother!:-)

You know, I searched high and low for these puppies, and finally found someone willing to trade for my 5 star ones.

I love the deep dishers, but of course, they would look better on a D-110:-)

oh, i know, im dreaming!

A 110? Naw, my vote would be for a '97 D90...maybe a red station wagon.
But yeah, I think they're the best looking LR rim.
As for the shelf, how about putting some of those screw-in hooks into the edge so you can hang up your BBQ tools or keys or ?

Ohhhhh, hooks. what a good idea. I always am looking for a place to hang crap. flash lites, utencils. Maybe I will drill in some dowels this afternoon, to give some hanging points.

Keep the ideas commin.

Lets make this the best CB camp shelf yet!

Blue,
your suggestion reminded me of a similar mod for a bike rack that is listed on D-90.com. here is the link to that page

http://www.d-90.com/mod/bike.html

looks like it can be easily adapted to use as a work surface.

Ok, so blue.
Say I get a nice peice of diamond plate, say a 6 or 8 inch circle.

How do I drill holes in the exact places so that the lug nuts would fit through?

I don't know what that circle action is all about - I'd just use a flat rectangle of Al as the shelf, and "L" bracket it to one or two lug nut holes or to the center cap hole. You just gotta get back there and think it through. Give yourself a nice little shelf and just leave it there when you're offroad.

I was thinking a circle, to fit inside the rim. A backing plate, if you will, in order to attach the shelf to.

Thats what I was talking about a cirle.
Im not crazy, really

Joshua,

I posted a drawing of an idea I have for a tire carrier mounted shelf

It would be lightweight and fold up flat for storage, and setting it up would only take a few seconds. I am thinking materials would be Aluminum or mild steel ~.062 - .090 for the shelf, piano hinges, all other materials would be around .090 thickness.

I just may have to make one for myself when I get some of my other projects done :-)

Sweet idea Dave - and I just happen to have a 4'x4' sheet of heavy aluminum tread plate left over from reworking the interior of my rear door (see my gallery). I'll post a pic when it's finished.

Hi
probably a bit late, but I don`t come here often, why not just have a hinged shelf on the back of the door on the inside, will protect stove from wind and can be made a lot easier and will pack away as well, hooks could be placed anywhere and stuff can simply be left in place.
Just a thought.

Jason, the Vortex table looks pretty small, but I imagine could be made bigger by strapping a larger cutting board or piece of wood/aluminium/etc. on top.

Btw, it's $5 cheaper at mountainsports.com -- Search for vortex table, if that link doesn't go straight there. Note that I've not dealt with them; I just found the table via google.
