Paul, I am shocked and appalled. Ben & Jerry's are evil and contribute monies to HCI and other such groups. I recommend a short and exhaustive study resulting in a change to the Haagen-Dazs ice cream pint food group.

I am a bit disappointed by the lack of the "Single Malt" group.

Paul, I'm with you on the single-malt, but around here in Wisconsin people drink Brandy like it's their job. Shall we compromise on a Distilled Group?

:-)

Damn, that's funny.

So here's the deal. I am lucky enough to camp with a group of folks that really like to eat and drink with great taste. There is one guy (who I'll leave his name out of this), who settles with a can of beef-a-roni. Jason (whoops did I mention his name) always makes up for his lack of culinary taste by contributing a fine single malt. Look at the SAE pics and you will see:

Andy, I thought everyone in Wisconsin drank Old Style. Every bar there has an Old Style sign in front of it, and some Green Bay Packer signs too. Go Lions!

Hi Paul - I haven't tried the Balvenie 21 yet. On my list of to try's though. It's the Portwood scotch isn't it?

I had a bottle of the 12 year old Doublewood a while back. Great scotch - so I can imagine the Portwood will be really great.

So here's the deal Jeff.

At that SAE trip I experienced a wonderful bottle of Macallan 1982 brought down by Mike Noe. So I start looking for a bottle of it here and I find a bottle of 1983. Well, last Friday I go into the packy to buy it and the commies sold it! "Some nerve" I told told them. The Balvenie 21 is just as good as the Macallans, but half the price.

I don't think there's such a thing as "bad" single malt. But, beyond that, individual preferences dominate - for instance, Laphroaig has a very smooth taste and thick peaty scent. It isn't to say it's good or bad (if you like Glenfiddich, you won't like it). I wouldn't have ever paid any attention to it if my friend with scottish roots hadn't shown it to me.

Peter, Laphroaig is like stuffing your mouth with 2 cubic feet of peat. Smell is most of the taste with that stuff. I always keep a bottle on hand though.

All that scotch and no Haggis. What a bunch of pansies. Maybe y'all should go paint some daiseys on your Discos to match.

;-)

Give it a try on your next outing.

You will probably have to suck up to a sheep farmer or a butcher in order to obtain the proper ingredients.

Ingredients:

1 Sheep's paunch (stomach)
2 lb. dry oatmeal
1 lb. suet, shredded
1 lb. lamb's liver
1 large onion
1/2 t cayenne pepper
1/2 t black pepper
1 t nutmeg
1 t mace
1/2 t salt

Procedure Pull the sheep's paunch inside out and scrape it clean. Pull it back right-side out. Boil the liver and parboil the onion. Save 2 1/2 C of the stock. Mince the liver and onion together. Lightly brown the oatmeal. Mix all the ingredients together, along with the reserved stock. Fill the paunch with the mixture, pressing it down to remove the air and sew it up securely.
Prick the Haggis so it won't burst during cooking. Place the haggis in boiling water and boil slowly for 4-5 hours. Serves approximately 12, or provides a taste of Haggis for a larger group.

We had that for last New Year, thank you very much Brian, there are lots of other things that i can kill meself with, and that would taste better :-) But then no one of them got poem written about by famous authors, like haggis does :-)

I am working with scottsman for past 5 years, so i learned plenty of that stuff :-)

If you want really weird stuff you can always ask Axel for some serious Norvegian classics. Even me wife, being from Estonia (wee bit country bordering with Finland, for those who dont know :-))) and capable of eating dishes based on cold porrige can not dig them :-)

I love the way visiting many places, the locals tend to test your metal by giving you the stuff that they are notorious for. Had plenty of the northern european fair while visiting friends in various countries.

Unless it is known to make own truely ill, I'll try almost anything to get the respect of said locals. There are Asian foods that make most harsh European stuff look like Filet Mignon.

Funny thing is most of the locals hate the stuff as well.

Kill yourself with Haggis though? I have it once a year... every year. Hell I think it is yummy, just needs a garlic mashed potatoes side.

Hate to watch it cooked though, your house will smell for a week and its not terribly good for you either.

Whenever I go to a Haggis celebrations (usually more for the scotch), I can never understand a word they are saying... EVEN IF I AM READING THE DAMN POEM!.

For those unfamiliar...
http://www.worldburnsclub.com/poems/translations/address_to_a_haggis.htm

I have heard quite a number of Haggis poems.

Some rather funny Scotch enduced ones too.

Haggis or Lutefisk?

That's a real tough call.

I really have to think on this one.

I'll have another Whisky.

Peter,

I have never tried the Laphroig stuff. It's always talked about on another forum I hang out on: www.cigarwise.com.
