I am getting tired of the typical sandwich and soda fare. Does anyone have suggestions for any good trail dishes?

Well Leslie, I really never went anywhere! I've been providing high quality and tasty peanut treats since 1906! I have, however, recently returned from a grueling expedition into the remotest of remote areas in search of the elusive bovine liberali. It was nutty I say!

I take this cool little gas grill along like this one http://store5.yimg.com/I/gasgrill-store_1683_5668980 and do burgers, dogs, or steaks. I found my grill at Rite Aid for $15 but they often are on sale.

actually GP that shit is like $50 usd in the czech republic and thats where i had it, these people are ripping you off hard. you cant drink much cause it's too strong, so i considered it a good value.

now speaking of mr peanut...

how about a big spoonful of australian peanut butter

mmmm, i like to add salt to it cause it tastes kind of bland.

When the fishing is bad,I grill some fresh bait shrimp on a skewer. If the fishing is good trout or red fish w/squeeze of lemon and butter. Add a side of crab and you have the best evening meal on the beach.

Dang! Susannah, you keep making us tied-down types start wanting to think ways that we shouldn't... to have a girlfriend that worked at a camping store, lol.....

Hey! Out of curiosity, you don't happen to have any old Moss stickers lying around, do ya?

I work as a Chef in the Best Restaurant in Indianapolis, I work 12 hour days making things like Seared Foie Gras with Duck Confit on toasted Brioche glazed with peach gastric. F#ck That! On my way out to the trail I stop by the grocery and pick up a Six Pack of New Castle and a Couple Boxes of Frozen White Castles. Heat the WC's up over a campfire and wash em' down with the New Castles. I seroius.

Wow-I forgot to check this after I posted! Sorry everyone!
I worked at a store in Lynchburg, VA during college...and I don't have any Moss stickers. But I had a few Mountain Hardwear (my brand of choice), TNF, Marmot and MSR ones left. I can always get more though.
And thanks Leslie for the compliment!! By the way-you are a Geologist? How do you like it? I was a bio/econ major and am currently working in something COMPLETELY un-scientific...but would love to look forward to a more 'outside' career...

LOL....

I still like my TNF gear, but it's mostly older stuff... my tents are Moss, and I love them, but have never found any stickers for 'em, and now that they're sold off to MSR, I don't guess I'll find any.... I do like Mountain Hardware's innovative approach to things, but, still haven't found anything I HAD to have, as my other stuff is still kicking along okay at the moment... next up for replacement are my Danners... might stick with Danners, though I'm leaning towards Limmers, maybe... But, stickers are good. :) lol...

Yep, guilty as charged... BS from Tennessee Tech, MS from Radford, work in Big Stone Gap for the VA DMME. Good job, IMHO... you don't get rich working for the state, but, I've got a decent office, a good computer, a boss who's a teddy-bear that lets you do what you want, good colleagues... the work, I can either be in my office, or, head to the field (in a J**p) to check out a mine site, bounce around old haul-roads mapping them with a GPS into our database, investigate complaints with mine-realted problems for homeowners, etc. Kinda like a jack-of-all-trades, really... that's why I liked geology so much in school, because you had to integrate chemistry, physics, biology, database management, computer art (mapmaking), hiking, etc. etc. Yeah, I gotta say, I love my job... :)

Bio/econ, eh? Hmmm...... good for running a pet store? lol.... J/K!!! that IS an interesting combination, tho'.... my BS in geology was with a minor in Business (in DS). My MS is really called: "Environmental and Engineering Geology".

I also spent a year working on a PhD in Appalachian tectonics, but, I just couldn't afford to stay in school for three more years. Plus, the only thing that the PhD adds is letting you be a tenure-track professor at a college... and I didn't like some of the dept. politics at bigger schools, so, I decided to get a job, and then occasionally I'll teach an adjunct geology or geography course.

What you need to do is have a Demo Days every day for the shop that you work at! :) You could be a field gear tester, write reviews for Backpacker, or all sorts of stuff like that....

Just a thought.... :)

Most people agree that the older TNF gear is good stuff, and I have plenty of it, but the newer stuff is getting too 'run of the mill' for the price. I love MHW-have two of their jackets and they look brand new after 5 years of use. Granted, I don't backpack in them everyday, but they are great. I have definitely thought about being a sales rep for outdoor gear. Those guys have so much fun, but they spend a lot of time on the road. They do get to attend the Demo Days Sales and chat with people...also take cool trips to the mountains. With my personality, I need to be in sales...but that's a weird combination with a degree in Biology! I don't want to sell drugs, though I know the Pharm Reps make a killing.

I probably need to get a Masters in order to do anything worthwhile, but I haven't made that step yet. I've been through Big Stone Gap a few times...not much to it! :) At my age (23) most people are giving up, moving home or working in something unrelated to their degrees..with the current state of the economy it's tough to be picky!
It's always fun to talk to other people about their jobs/careers though.

Are you going to attend the MAR event in the fall? I'm hoping to get out there and meet some of the people I've bene talking to on Disco Web!

There's a reason why I live in Kingsport and drive up to Big Stone Gap each day! :)

Yep, the new TNF stuf is more "trendy", not die-hard equipment anymore, IMHO...

I agree, a MS is usually used as a go-no test... if you don't have a MS, it's hard to work in your field, but if you have a MS you can find work.

And yes, I will be at MAR... find the Thatched Roof Garage campsite, and I should be around.... :) I'll see ya there!

Looking forward to it then! I'm going to be heading down to the Smokies for vacation this year, will give you a wave when I pass the Tn/Va line! :)

Oh, and I forgot to say that the line about running a petstore was funny....maybe, you know I do like animals....J/K!

Hi-jack. Watch out for Moutian Hardware's quality in the coming years, as they are now owned by Columbia. They might go the way of North Face when they were bought by Vanity Fair a few years ago. MSR, Marmot, and Patagonia gear keeps looking better and better.

Well, for the time being anyway, Mountain Hardwear has some great stuff. But I have found that Marmot's clothing is just as good, and MSR's gear is on the same level too. But I've never been impressed with Patagonia. Call me crazy, but I just don't like their stuff.
