Looks like potential vaporware ala GPS-style. The release date on that link indicates September. We seem to have a forward time drift here.

Actually, that DOES make sense... use the 76S for GPS work, and use the Rino as an FRS that just happens to tell you where everyone is....

Now, I have to say, Garrett's 176 does have a bigger screen, if you're interested in vehicle-only use. But, in no way am I knocking the 76S' screen... although the same size as several other GPS units, it has a finer resolution, so that you get more map on the screen. I loaded in the topos for a big chunk of my stomping grounds, covering from down below Tellico and the Smokies, up past Knoxville, over along Asheville, all the way up to Roanoke. And it still had room left.

I leave the compass turned off, just to save on the battery-drain, but it's there to be turned on when needed. The altimeter runs all the time, on or off. When inside, I turn the GPS tracking off, so that it's not eating batteries when I'm uploading tracks or downloading topos.

Also, I haven't even turned WAAS on yet... w/o it, it's usually got me dead-on on the road on the screen.... only under thicker tree-cover does it get a bit off, showing you beside the road instead.... a roof-top antenna should eliminate that, I think.

I haven't used any of the routes or waypoints yet... everytime that it's on, it is "making tracks", showing where you are, where you're going, what time it is, speed... so that, without touching waypoints, you can still have an uploadable line showing the route that you had just driven.

I'm still learning the nuances of it, but it was real easy to pick up the basics of it.

It wasn't the cheapest one out there, the Magellan Meridian Platinum is a little cheaper (I paid less for my Garmin than the list price on the Meridian, but, if I had shopped hard for the Meridian it would have been less than list, too).... But! The Meridian has a barometer, where the 76S has an altimeter.... the 76S can use an external antenna, the Meridian can't, and.... the 76S comes with 24mb of memory.... the Meridian can be upgraded to more than that even, but, you have to purchases extra memory cards to get it up past the 76S... as it comes, it doesn't have as much memory as the 76S. And, I have to say, the 76S' memory isn't lacking, IMHO.

I'm really happy with the 76S.

FWIW, check out the August issue of National Geographic's Adventure magazine for a nice one-page summary of GPS units, and also, the latest REI catalog has a nice comparison chart in it on GPS units. But, shop around, you can find 'em cheaper than REI's prices....

OOOH..
i meant the 176. i am going from my fishfinder to something else. it must have a similar screen and goodies.

also if i get a dedicated car unit it must be able to run off the battery, but i haven't got this far in my research. i loved my lowrance but it wouldn't work as an antenna for my laptop based travles and that just was unacceptable.

my dream is to have dueling gps's. i just hope they don't blow up the satelites during Armageddon

LOL!

A 12-volt adapter is available for both the 76S and the 176, and, both take external antennas...

The 176 is nice for a permanent fixed-mount in an auto.... the 76S is great if you want one GPS for both hiking and driving (and boating, too).
