Any plans on bringing back e-mail notification? I liked that feature on the old Discoweb BBS setup

Probably not. We don't want to abuse the liberal bandwidth privileges that Jeff has given us.

The frustrating thing is that I cannot keep track of the few posts I do post -- it is time consuming to (a) keep scanning the thread you did start to see if there is new stuff and (b) scanning the threads that you did not start, but are of interest to you.

Well, here's a suggestion:
What do you think about opening up a paid up-grade so to speak? You can still keep your basic board free, but maybe for some nominal charge (say 5 bucks a month in six month blocks) offer a few more bulletin board features to folks willing to pay a little.

Seems to me each time I use this BBS that you three provide a fantastic service -- but this non-notification by email does cripple (albeit only a little) a phenomenal service.

This suggestion would seem not to infringe on the spirit of your efforts, while providing access to some steady cash flow.

Ok, enough. I'll drop it.

Michael

Michael:

It's not a cash issue, it's a security issue. If we activate outgoing email from this server, we are potentially opening up a security hole big enough for the script kiddies and spammers to drive a 110 through. That's not to say that email notification won't be back, we just need to investigate how it can be done securely, then make a final decision.

Any decision on the email notification yet? Is it a firewall issue or something? Can't there be a one way firewall set up to allow email out? It is a bloody good feature sometime:)

Hey,
I dont know what OS you are running the server on but if you are just sending mail out and the system is a Unix you can set exim up to just send out going mail without having smtp open so it is not possible to be used as a relay or even have port 25 open. The problem is dealing with bounces from people that have lost their mail accounts. If I can be of help and it is unix :) just email me anytime

i was thinking that depending on who sends in the pictures for a particular trail, that there could be a link from that person/persons' gallery to the trail page.. jsut an idea.

I agree, I would like to see this as well and to step up with Jeremy, if its a Windows platform, maybe I can help.

I am a government contractor that specializes in financial systems security. It doesn't get much more secure than that.
