1. No smiley faces and flag (I think it's a flag).

2. Leave the original poster on the message. That way I can look for my posts quite easily if I forget the subject.

3. Leave posts in the order of the original post. Moving them up when a reply occurs throws off one's tracking of new posts.

4. To alert members of a new reply to a post since the member last viewed place a graphic to the left of the listing (where the smileys are). This would mean the software will have to know who is viewing the bbs but that's easily done with a cookie.

5. Change the colors. Yellow on black is the most contrasty color combination. It's good for signs but not for small text reading. You can try allowing the member to set his own colors - may not be worth the effort.

6. Enter the members username/password automatically when viewing posts. Again, a cookie. At least give me the option of this if you're concerned about "security".

7. Add a "start new thread" link to the top of the listings. I shouldn't have to scroll all the way down to do this.

#1. It's a "New Posts added" flag.

#2. Discus don't accomodate that

#3. Scrolling to the bottom of a couple of houndred posts gets old *really* fast

#4. See Item 1.

#5. We like the colors the way they are

#6. Unless you disabled cookies on your machine, Discus already does that. Check your profile page.

#7. See #2. We aren't going to rewrite Discus, sorry.

Hi Arthur,

3) Posts are already ordered by their postings dates. You are thinking of the Threads that are moved to the top when a new one is created or post inside one is made. This way you don't have to search the whole list for new threads.

4) This already happens with a "New" pointer graphic. You need to enable cookies and be logged in for it to be tuned to your visits.

6) This already happens as well. You need to go into your profile and make sure that you remove the check mark from "Clear your cookies when you exit" selection as well as make sure you security settings on your browser are low enough to retain cookies. Once you have those settings correct, you will be able to retain your account logged in every time you return. As I mentioned above, this will also help with #4 since now your browser knows what you already have looked at and will show you the "New" flag on new threads you either have not seen yet and threads that have new postings since your last visit rather than assume you are an unregistered user and that you have not seen anything yet.

Hope that helps a bit. If you get those setting adjusted, you should have a smoother ride through the board.

Chris von C.

If you look in the archives, I posted a request about the color contrast quite sometime ago. I pretty much got the same answer although I was approaching it from the issue of people with vision problems. Contrast becomes very important if your vision isn't perfect or you have a color deficiency.

Arthur - just so I can know exactly where you are talking about... what is yellow on black? I see yellow on brown which is worse but don't know what area(s) of the site you were referring to.

As for feature requests, Discus is not exactly the most feature rich bulletin board system out there. It runs off of CGI scripts which are modifiable but as Axel et al. can relate, it isn't exactly a simple task.

I would like to suggest that when asking for requests to the BBS system, you head over to http://www.discusware.com/discus/index.php and see what the system can actually do. It isn't the most robust system and uses an extremely inefficient file storage method. Discus was not designed to compete with the more expensive systems.

If I may inquire, I'd like to know a bit about your hosting situation. Who is hosting, how much it is costing, are you on a dedicated box, redundancy, etc. etc.

One day, maybe not for several years, you may decide to at least look into some other options. I can offer some ideas for you guys to look at when and if that day ever comes.

8. Give me the shirt off your back. I shouldn't have to ask for this.

Easy Blue... Arthur was making suggestions and wasn't really being very demanding.

Easy?

Logging on for free, using the site for free, gaining knowledge from the tech section for free...now that's easy.

Now that I can fully agree with... I didn't notice the number of posts.

What I was really saying is that everyone is quick to jump on someone as of late. Don't read too much into text on the screen. Breathe deep and relax.
