Every now and then, I have a friend in Europe right now that should be bringing back some Cubans when he returns. I look forward to smoking them even though the one Cuban I have had didn't really live up to my expectations 100%, maybe I expected too much because it was good it just wasn't THAT good (I don't remember exactly what kind it was, it was 2 years ago). |

I have had some Cohiba's from Cuba and I actually like the Dominican ones better. I have had a few different types of Cuban cigars and I just don't really think they are all that great. I think it just has to do with the fact that you aren't allowed to have them that makes every one so kiddy like a school girl to get some.. I like Savinelli ELRs, Davidoffs, Cohibas, Bolivars, C.A.O.s... Some other brands too that I just can't think of the name right now.. I mostly smoke the Savinellis as they are my favorite. |

Agreed on the Cubans, more hype than anything. I had quite a few in Australia when there on vacation and wasn't all that impressed. A delicious cigar that rivals even the highest priced ones at a low cost is a Don Rene Robusto Maduro. Absolutely wonderful smoke. Tom |

I think it is more a matter of taste. The Cubans that I have had are a more spicy, full-bodied cigar than the Dominicans. I don't think that you could say that one is better, there are good and bad from each area. Kind of like saying a Merlot is better than a Cabernet Sauvignon. IMHO. Mike |

Wow, The only people I know who were really into cigars that didn't like Cubans, weren't getting real ones. I've had a number of Cubans, and most were quite good. However, I lost my source to get them easily and I don't fool with it anymore. My favorite were Cohiba Esplendidos and I have had a few being aged now for more than 5 years. CAO is producing some of my favorite current cigars including the Cameroons which are EXCELLENT. Also the Padron Anneversario series is among some of the best cigars around. The Opus X have been spotty recently, but I've had some put away for several years and some a little newer. The new CAO Brazillian series are surprisingly good for the money and the Extremes are spicy and delicious if you like that sort of thing. I don't stray too far from these unless I pick up a few cheaper Partagas "S" torpedos for trips. Those are probably the best under $5 cigars I've tried. Jim, get one of those CAO Cameroons and you'll never want another Macanudo. I promise. -P |

I don't know Perrone, I think it has to do with personal taste when it comes to cuban cigars. I have had quite a few real cuban cigars and some were OK and some I just didn't like. They were expertly rolled, burned well, but, I just didn't like the taste. I have had a couple that I liked but, nothing that I would go out of my way to get again when I can go down the street and pick up a box of cigars that I do like very much. But, then not many people like the Savinelli ELRs as much as I do. |

Yea Eric, I guess you're right. People thought I was nuts when I said I didin't like the Padron Maduros or the LGC Serie "R". They just did nothing for me. I'm not that particular about many Cubans either but I do like a few very much. However, I can't think of any Cubans beside the Esplendidos that I liked more than the crop of Padrons I bought 3 years ago or the CAO's I bought last year. To each his own I suppose. -P |

I had a Cuban Montecristo once and it is comparable to the Dom Rep product. Not worth the money. I didn't know many smoke cigar. One question. Do you smoke while you drive? if yes, how? I figured that in most car, if you roll your window 1" down, the wind will just blow out and bring the smoke out (to make the queen happy). But in the Disco, the wind is blowing in bringing all the smoke. Just want to know if you have any experience on this one. Thanks |

I don't smoke in the car or the house. I ussually enjoy a cigar while having a beer either with friends around a camp fire or at one of my favorite bars that still allow them. Every once in a while I smoke one while working on the rover too.. |

Don't smoke in the D2 out of deference to the Mrs. and the kids. Everything else is fair game. Typically onboard stogs are consumed on a Saturday early morning run to Pep Boys or Hardware store to pick up bits for the days mishaps in the old FJ62. Lately the cabs and merlot have been shelved for some really big zins from the Paso Robles area ...good stuff. |

I've tried a lot of different off shore brands. One of my sales reps is into cigars big time and he'll throw me a new one every now and then. But I always find myself going back to my drug store bought Backwoods Smokes. They are just nice for sitting around with good friends, drinking some beers and shootin' the shit. Mike |

I like the Torpedo shape the best. You still get a good mouthful of smoke but you don't have some huge dick-shaped object inside your mouth. Favorite cigar by far is the Monty Two. I almost never smoke cigars any more, because I can't afford them. But once in a while I'll strike gold. About a month ago a customer gave me some Cuban Cohibas and R&J Churchills after we installed an ARB on his D90. |

John, I'm guessing you don't get your mouth around to many robustos and Doubles then! That's funny as hell. I have been resting a Monty now for almost 8 years. I figure I'll smoke it the day I pack up house to move. Tom, The Cuban's I've had generally have lived up to my expectations but a great many others have not. The Opus X #2 always does for me, as does the padron Anniv torpedo. The CAO Belicosos in Extreme, and Cameroons are as good as any cuban I've had though. And if a cigar is only a cigar, its a disappointment. A Cigar should be an escape to a better place for an hour or so. And is nicely chased with a good single malt or a brandy. -P |

I can't sit this one out! Firstly, the cab is the thing just about all the time - why mess with a merlot or pinot when you can go for that buttery, thick cab?! Arturo Fuente (Fuente Fuente Robusto) all Dominican - for the cheap everyday smoke Romeo y Julieta (Cuban) single corona Cohiba (Cuban) Esplendido #5 - Oh, s*** that is a fine smoke. Not too big - a nice even burn. Ashton Vintage Cabinet #3 - A true torpedo for guys who hate that big ***k in the mouth kind of experience. Hard to find this size for some reason - the #1 is way too big for my taste. Punch Gran Cru has some nice cigars in the line for a good price - I do enjoy an occassional Honduran! Any other recommendations outside of the Opus X? I've got a <$25 per bottle wine budget and hate spending even a third of that on a cigar! One cheap bastard here! e |

Hey Folks, I just got back from the Pub where I enjoyed an Ashton VSG cigar. It was nice but after reading this thread I want more..... This Saturday (19th) I am flying to England for a week. What is the trick or secret to sending some Cubans back to the states to my home address. If you do not want to reply, then email me from my discoweb profile. Thanks, Paul '00 Pig |

Rob, A quote from the tome of Kennith. Yeah, The onyx reserves are nice. I'm partial to CAO extremes as well, particularly when working on Misty. In my profile picture, that's a CAO Brazilia in my hand. If I'm really trying to wind down, though, I usually light up an Ashton VSG, or my personal favorite, a Don Diego Playboy. Cheers, Kennith |

I remember [before there were magazines about it - circa 1993, methinks] buying AF robustos for $2.75 each in twentys. After they had two warehouse fires in as many years, and then introduced the Opus X - things got way too expensive for me. Anyone have some recommendations for the Fuente-loving budget-conscious smoker? e |
