I think the owner of that vehicle is named Cornelius or Dr. Zauis. He would have to be to climb that ladder.

Damn, did the entire MAR event revolve around that same muddy slope near the water?

Posted on Friday, October 11, 2002 - 07:12 pm:   Edit Post Delete Post Print Post

That slope was apparently the obstacle to overcome for the event. Did anyone ever make it up? I watched my buddy try at it for a few moments but it looked like a winch needed situation to me.

That muddy slope was a great place to hang out after you had a long day on the trails. It was easily accessible from camp and it was a great place to cool off. Most of the trails were narrow and didn't have a good place to pull off and watch.

At that slope, I parked my truck in the water, put my folding chair in the water and had a few brewskies while my champion Rover Dog took a swim. The next thing I know, there were about thirty other people that got the same idea. It sort of turned into a "happy hour".

I met many great people there, saw a bunch of axels break and saw a guy almost get killed when he was thrown out of a truck.

Sounds like a blast. We missed out.

The guy that was thrown out of the truck almost got ran over. He ended up walking away unharmed.

Rob,
That's not a 110, that's a 130. There are ways...

Ho,
There is a removable ladder to get up into that tent, I believe.... take the ladder down, toss it in the Rover, lock up the Rover, and the tent is "secure".

AFAIK, Vince is the only one who made it up that slope. Course, I guess Vince doing it isn't really a fair comparison, eh? lol......

Hey Leslie,

I just got back from Dallas, so I haven't had a chance to look at that CD yet. As if now, Ann Marie and I still plan on exploring your side of the planet in the spring. Next Saturday, I am flying to London for a week and will try to post some pics of that trip.

Cool.... I don't know if the CD will help ya or not, I just went through my stack of NG Adventure and scanned anything related to the Smokies.... pulled a couple of things off of the web, and found something in Backpacker on the Balds...

If there's anything you can think of that you might specifically be interested in, let me know, and I'll hunt it down if I can find it....

Leslie,

Was Vince driving that thing that looks like a forward control with dual axels? That was the only thing we saw make it up.

Vince was driving the 6x6 pinz. That truck is amazing. The only other person I know that made it up was JBS at the very beginning of the weekend. The problem with that obsatacle is that everytime you attempt it, the truck splashes more water on the slope making it hella slick.

Yep, Vince was there in his Pinz instead of his Rover....

I agree, it's hard to make it up since the wheels are just throwing water onto the slope, churning in and making more mud...

Rob : build one for yourself. :)

your kidding right? 300 some rovers and 1 truck (not even a rover) is all that can get up a short slope like that? does the pic not do it justice or where there too many ARM chairs in the way of the approach?

Muskyman, the pics didn't do it justice...I pulled up to it, touched it with my bumper, took a look and didn't even bother trying. LOL

I settled for going up the slope on the opposite side of the river.

I was playing in the water down stream when the piz went up, just saw the tail end disappear and heard the cheers.

skinny tires and high tire pressures will make little slopes like that look pretty tough

There are actually 2 slopes next to the water that look similar. The main problem ws that the steeper of the 2 had ruts dug in that would stop your momentum.

Last year, I spent quite a bit of time wheeling in and around Pinzgauers. I decided to do a write up on the trucks. You may find it quite interesting. It gives a comparison to the D90 and is written with the LR owner in mind...

http://www.spanishtrailrovers.com/Tech/Info/Whats_a_Pinzgauer/whats_a_pinzgauer.html

I also converted the old Pinzgauer factory video (from 1972) into a windows video. It's 11MB and about 14:45 minutes long. Shows how they are built, how they were tested, and their capabilities.

Enjoy.

As far as that slope goes, the pictures don't do it justice at all. That shot was taken with the camera angled down at the Rover. The rest of the hill is to the right if that shot out of sight. It's VERY steep (or at least it was when I tried). As good as my approach angle is, when I nosed into it it packed my fairlead with dirt and mud. Then, once I got four tires on the slope, my rear bumper was dragging the stream bed. Once I realized I wasn't going any farther up, I attempted to back down. Almost got stuck doing that! Rear bumper was digging in pretty bad. Once I was down, I walked around to the back and saw dirt piled up about 6" onto my spare. I can only imagine what would have happened to a stock bumper on that hill.

But wait there is a catch to that. Jason went down that same hill right before him.

No damage at all. His bumper is stock too.

But he drives a D1 which is 6 inches shorter.

The only time in life where length actually counts.

I gave it a go and whammo, my rear bumper became the sacrificial lamb. But on the bright side, my new bumper from Trek Outfitters will be here tomorrow. :)

Rebecca,

Thanks for rubbing it in. Someday when you own and drive a Land Rover product, you will be able to contribute more good info to the masses.

Paul,

One thing to mention to everyone is that the hill is much steeper than I think anyone is imagining. This is the same hill that Greg Davis was trying to get up. This picture would in actuality need to be rotated about 15 degrees clockwise to be perfect, but you get the idea.

You were talking about the guy who was thrown out the back. I think this is the picture. http://www.roav.org/images/mar2002/pages/026_26.htm

Notice that the tire is missing. It ended up on top of him while the poor and firtunate gentleman was lying in the mud. It could have been pretty bad.

Hey Thomas! Yea that was the pic. I also saw a digital pic at MAR that had the guy in mid-air landing head first. I wish he would post it.

Also, the guy in that pic with the tow-rope had the whole thing on video. It's pretty wild!

Paul,

Everyone is a little edgy and WAY into pissed off. I've had to calm the nerves of a few anxious parents (calling me about whether or not we're holding riding lessons), but at least right now we're out of the area of deepest concern. The advantage of our pennisula I guess, one road in, same road out, bad for sniper getaways. I really think this sick mo-fo is more oriented toward the closer-in suburbs. Been thinking a lot about our more urban friends. As long as we don't get idiot copy-cats, we should get through this. I'll admit to being very angry about this whole thing, but I hold it in and try to make a safe place for folks to forget their troubles for a couple hours. Best I can do....

You have a better chance of getting hit and killed by a car or getting stabbed and killed from a mugging then getting shot by the snipper. There is so much crime in the areas like Manassas and Falls Church that one other person getting shot isn't a big deal. People get shot, stabbed, raped, and killed here every day. Only difference is that this person is doing it repeatedly instead of lots of people doing it once. I'm more worried about walking my dog in my own neighborhood then I am about getting gas and getting shot by "The Sniper".. But, I guess if you live in a nice quiet, sheltered, low crime neighborhood then it would seem like a big deal.

LOL, thanks for the upbeat note, Eric! Everything is relative I suppose, and yes, I live in a very low crime area, but the spectre of this repeat murderer, and the media attention, keeps most people on edge. Glad you're able to take it all in stride, but I think a lot of folks aren't as easy-going about it as you are. I'm honestly unable to remember when the last murder took place in my county, sometimes it's literally years between homicides around here. If we're going to discuss this sniper business, maybe we ought to do the MAR folks a favor and start a new thread. I don't mind talking about it, but next we know we'll be inadvertantly linking the sniper with MAR! ;)

LOL, Garrett ... (I can think of a few others too)

Well I don't to despoil the MAR event thread here, but just wanted to say glad y'all are coping okay over there ... Heck, I'm clear across the country, and it's been getting on my nerves ... Really makes me feel angry. I mean, I don't know how I'd feel if (as one gal put it)suddenly pumping gas became an extreme sport, or feeling like I need to run the serpentine zigzag in and out of craft and grocery stores. (actually, come to think of it, may not be such a bad idea afterall anywhere around here, LOL) Ugh. I have some very close friends out that way, and it's gotten on my nerves ... All the manpower and cost ... Okay, I guess I just barfed on the thread ... sorry (but glad you're doing okay)

Karen,

How could you post such an inflamatory question? LOL, what were you thinking? Heehee, reminds me, I need to get a watch that will take a beating - I'm killing my good one (the one that has the most sentiment for me). :)

Paul,

Sorry to see your "pig's" ouwie, but congrats on your new rear bumper! Mine is on it's 9th life now, I fear it's living on borrowed time ... Not sure how many more times Greg can fix it for me, and yes, it's got bit of a smile. I think that I was kind of saving myself (from myself) when I had the stock front bumper, air dam, and fog lights.

Cheers all,

Kim :)
