Hey folks,

My wife and I are thinking about purchasing an old (high mileage) D1 or RR just for offroading. Yes, my DII does just fine, but it's getting too many scratches, and it's my daily driver, so I can't beat it to hell. :)

I need a vehicle where I don't care if it gets scratched, dented, etc - just as a toy.

What are your opinions on the DI vs RR ?? This would not be a daily driver - just for offroading every now and then.

Thanks!
-Tommy

I would go with the RR classic.

Does it HAVE to be a Land Rover? If you are looking for a dedicated off-road machine, there are many good choices out there. Perhaps something other than a Land Rover might make the best pure offroader unless you are staying brand loyal.

Tommy,
my fiance and I are now considering the very same thing. I love my D1 and it was awesome what we were able to do with it just in stock form, but it is also my daily driver and I need it to stay in good shape. A few people have suggested we get a RRC to play in...and I know there are lots of them out there for a fairly inexpensive price, I just wonder about maintenance costs. You might pay more for a D1 b/c of the years available but maybe it would be cheaper in the long run? I'm speculating as well.
We were thinking RRC also b/c it's different than the Disco. I wish we had ridden in one at MAR though.
Good luck! Look at lrx...they have a few good deals!

101 Forward Control... Or dare I say it.. A Jeep.. If it was a trail only vehicle then I would go with the MOG.

Why is it that whenever this question comes up people pick the RRC? The RRC has a rear end as big as the D2 (D1 has a smaller rear). The only RRC's I would consider for a pure off road vehicle is the '87-88 model years or pre VC ('91?). And these have weaker axles than the D1. But if you were going to swap out the axles anyway the 88-89 RRC's could give you a little less electronics than the D1. And the RRC of that vintage came with a 3.5L engine. While the D1 has the 3.9.

I'm not trying to be a wise ass but I'm just wondering why the RRC? Granted my off road use in the D1 is much more limited compared to my experience with the RRC and D2. So am I missing something about the D1?

As in people who don't or haven't driven the RRC? Is that what you're trying to say?

tommy, go drive them both. see how they feel. and you decide. it's all about the love you feel from driving it.

if you get the rangie, you'll be a happy rangie owner convincing yourself every damn minute that you are driving a real cool vehicle.

if you get the disco, you might be posting here in the future to tell a guy like you get a rangie. because for some of the disco owners here, the grass is indeed greener on the other side.

I thought that was only for Defender envy. I would say get the RR because they are easier to fit larger tires with less work and you can pick them up cheaper then a used Disco. But, then I would also say get the MOG, big, stable, has lockers, don't really need to do a thing with it but wheel the hell out of it. IE no buildup needed unless you want to.. Get a MOG.

Tommy - We used to have an '89 RR. Got rid of it because upkeep (parts) were starting to be an issue. You know that part of the story because you have owned Land Rovers. Although there may be some argument about the particular year, the '89 is an excellent choice because it has a good blend of the goodies, without some of the later overkill items that tend to be more trouble than they are worth. I am sure that the numerous RR owners on this site are testament to that. I haven't owned a D1, so I can't comment one way or the other, except to say that I would obviously take one of those over any of the other off-brand mentioned above (two-Rover family rocks). Bottom line on my old RR is that every time I see a Classic, I kick myself in the butt for ever getting rid of it. It should have become my son's first vehicle, but I was too short sighted at the time to see that. Enjoy whatever you decide on.

Jon follow link for MOGs www.eurotruck-importers.com

Ho, though I haven't owned a Range Rover Classic I have driven one a few times. They said cheap and you can get Range Rover Classic pretty cheap. Sorry we can't all have a cool school bus like you..

I got a disco over RR for two reasons:

1. At a bit over 6'3, there just isn't enough headroom in the RR. The disco has headroom, even if I can't see out the windscreen...
2. No manual transmission available with the RR.

But you probably don't care about either issue (so why did I post?).

I just don't really like RRCs....

Get a Series! :)

But, a D1 for trail-use would be practical for getting to-n-from the trail, you don't have to trailer it around....

IMHO, FWIW.....

I had a 93 LWB for a couple of years that saw the same trail use as my Disco and I'd have to pick a D1, except for maybe the 87-88 RR as previously mentioned. My main reason is the braking system - as the ABS system is integrated on a RR and if it goes your brakes go. I had that happen on the trail and it is no fun. I also prefer a CDL vs. VC but it has been hard to compare the two as I had TC in the rear on the RR and it was always kicking in, it worked thought. If you could live with the VC then I'd look for a 91 Hunter as it would have the 3.9 but not the ABS.

89 doesnt have ABS or a 90,91 hunter.

89 also has 3.9

but all are VC, just swap in an lt230 though :)

2 things i really like about the range rovers:
-lower overall height
-rear tail gate

eric, for sure your disco is greener than mine. :)

Not sure what you meant by that Ho since so many things could be read into that. Makes no difference though.
