I'm thinking of purchasing a Range Rover soon and wondered if there are any disadvantages to buying a LWB model over the standard wheelbase. I know it will be a little less agile off road but what about for everyday use? Put it this way if there were two identical ones for sale one being a LWB and one a standard which would you choose and why? Also is the updated interior and AC system worth holding out for a 95' model? Thanks for any info for a newbie.

If you get a LWB or any '93 and up Rangie be prepared for the air springs to go out at any time. They are a nice conveniance, but can be a serious pain if they go out. You can though, for around $600 put coil springs on it and not have to worry. You will suffer with off-road capibilities since the vehicle will be 8 inches longer, but if you carry around alot of people in the back seat, they will be very appreciative of the extra leg room. So you are going to have to weigh the pros and cons, and find out what best suits your needs.

Willtel,

For everyday use especially like highway driving, the extra length certainly smooths out the road. We have the LWB version and it makes traveling much easier as you can place things behind the seats very easily. If you have rear passengers, the difference is pretty significant. The rear area behind the seats is the same on both.

As to the '95 model, it depends if you like that look which is similiar to a Disco interior or the more original Range Rover interior. If the A/C works, it usually works well in any of them from what I've seen/heard.

Will B is totally right in the EAS system. Cool idea, poor execution. We replaced ours with a SGII suspension and am very pleased with it.

E-mail directly if you want for more info..

Unless you have long legged people in the back seat go SWB. Older Rovers are easier to fix, and they have less bells and whistles to worry about and replace. '95's share more in common with later Range Rovers and Discos. Here's mine, what a bargain.

Yeah...I guess...

BUT,
Here's a couple more thoughts. Some LWB come with 4.2 liter engines, a bit more difficult to find parts. Other parts, brake lines, interior parts, side steps are also specific to LWB and are a bit more expensive and difficult to find.

Really, the air springs are an issue.

Oops, bet I a just started a war with my LWB brethern.

Not quite a war but here's more info to confuse you:

All LWB have a 4.2L - they need it - not difficult to find parts though.

Air spring conversion can be done for around $300 even with OME springs and LR seats if you do it yourself - not difficult. Advantage is external front shocks - easy to retain springs and change shocks.

Even regular legged passangers will appreciate the limo like back seat.

So far, not a problem off-road, it's still a shorter wheel base than a D110.

Good luck

Just to add some fuel to the fire.....a Jeep cherokee classic is around 107" wheel base vs the 109" for the LWBs. The cherokees do quite well offroading as we all know.
