last year at the mar event i noticed several vehicles with "port holes" cut into the bonnet for removal of the hot air created under there. this year i was expecting to seem more of the same and discuss with the owners as i was thinking of doing this to my vehicle. has this modification turned out to be worse than leaving bonnet stock or was it just another rover fad? |

I'm still contemplating this mod since my '91 is smoking hot on long trips. Unfortunately, I can't get myself to hack up my bonnet just yet and winter is approaching so I'm postponing it. Currently, the lower part of my dashboard and heater unit are completely out. So I'm planning on removing some of the old insulation material that's loose and replace it with self sticky heat shield (inside the cab). During this process I'll be covering up every inch of the floor/firewall with this stuff in the hopes of closing up any holes. Secondly, while the engine was out, I was planning on applying the same heat shield material on the engine side of the firewall. But a friend suggested against it due to the "trap water in" issue. So I may simply apply some heat treatment paint in the hopes of better heat reflection. If all of this is still ineffective then I'll do something drastic. One thought I had was to cut a large rectangular hole in the windshield decker panel (between the hood and windshield)in each side. Then install metal louvers from the inside and paint to match. These louvers are from home heat register ducts and they come in various sizes. |
