I've heard a bunch of things... I have a 1998 Disco LSE and was wondering if it is BMW made before they sold to Ford?

The announcement that BMW was going to sell Land Rover to Ford came out in March of 2001.

FWIW....

Land Rover made......BMW had just recently bought Land Rover at that point in time, but the design and manufacture were still LR without a great deal of BMW influence. In it's 3-4 years of ownership BMW was far less influential in LR affairs than Ford has been in it's first year!!! And I don't see that as a good thing.

Well, Land Rover was owned by BMW at that time. However, the current line up you see was BMWs doing. Look for Ford to make things worse in 2004. I'm sure some one will correct me if I'm wrong.

I hear BMW designers came back to help design & engineer the 2003 models... When I get my oil change at the dealership, service would tell me that I have a great year, because the other new models are made by Ford and there are a TON of problems.. So I should be lucky to have what I have (98 LSE Disco)...

Hmmmm...a LR dealer telling you you should be so lucky....I recommend SPF 50 around your most delicate of sphincters....the sunshine they are blowing up there will burn you :)

http://www.bonforums.com/trucks/land_promisingfuture111202.htm

Read the part about a possible new Disco based on the Exploder platform. No solid axles... If it comes to fruition, then the 2003 Disco is the last I'd buy.

A car-based Land Rover called the Challenger? Damn, Ford is f*cking up big time, IMHO.

There was a LR project called Challenger in '90 that never saw the light of day. It was to be positioned somewhere between a Disco and a D90.

And then, a Range Rover Sport? That may be interesting. Did anyone else read this? Am I reading old news?

Just to straighten out the time line....the design of major changes on any vehicle are 3-4 years of development in advance of production. A complete new vehicle is as much as 5 years. So a 1998 D1, unchanged in essense for at least 6 or 7 years before 1998 was designed by LR, developed by LR, and manufactured by LR in Solihill. The oversight by BMW at that time would only have been a positive influence on the Quality Control. BMW influence in the development of the 2003 D2 and the new 2003 RR was big. The RR was developed with the BMW engine from the X5 and because it was so integral in the design, they made an agreement with Ford to continue to supply the engines for the RR even after the sale. I have to wonder how long that will last.
Ford has had major influence in the parts procurement and distribution since they purchased as well as oversight of projects on the boards from a financial position. They had so much influence that they shut down the parts warehouse in England for almost 3 weeks to reorganise, inventory, renumber and recalculate the entire parts process. They caused a massive backlog of needed parts in September and October. It will likely be a better system in the long run, but will likely cost us more!!

The Ford influence on design of new vehicles? If you want insight, simply look to what they have done with Jaguar, that is the perfect model.
