I am sure many of you have replaced alternator with an upgraded model. I need some advice as to what size of the upgraded alt is practical, what brands, what vendors and what are the gotchas? Thanks, Lee |

I replaced the alternator on my '89 RR with a Delco 90 amp model from an early eighties GM pickup. I used one with an "R" terminal so I would have a tach hookup, did a little creative bracket work and it's been doing great for 30K miles including some serious winching. Hardest part was picking around a junk pile to find the size pully I wanted to get the tach to read spot on (I was too cheap to buy one). You can go with a higher amp model but you may need to upgrade your wiring. Bad side...doesn't use stock length belt anymore. Good Luck, Mike |

I went with a new Land Rover unit ment for a 4.0 RR i think . It's rated at 100 amps and has not let me down the way all of the custom heavy duty units I had made did. Paul '91 RRC |

Are we talking about the V8s with the 4 belts? I mean, my '92 Disco has the 3.5i with the 4 belts and I 'upgraded' to the 80 AMP RR unit (from 65 AMPS). Any one have the part number of a Delco/Bosch/LR unit that can fit there with a 100+ AMP rating? Thanks |

I did a 130amp Ford Alternator in mine. Conversion bracket is available from Wrangler NW. www.wranglernw.com. The bracket cost about $100, New Lifetime Warranty Alternator from Pep Boys $100, Misc. wires to wire up and eliminate stock Alternator wire ~$50. So for about $250 I now have 130 amps and a lifetime warranty. I made this decision after rebuilding the stock 85 amp alternator twice in one year. Cost too much and a POS to boot. Larry |

Larry et. al. Do you have part numbers for the Ford/GM alternators that you used? The cheapest alternators I could find were $200. Does anyone sell the whole package, bracket wiring harness etc. Thanks for everyones responses so far. Lee |

I am not aware of anyone who sells the complete package. I do not know the P/N however, just ask for an alternator off of a '95 Mustang GT. It has the highest output of the style you need. It cost me $100 at Pep Boys. Regarding wiring, if you decide to do it drop me an e-mail and I will help you wire it up. Fairly simple to do, plus I have already figured out the gotchas. You may have to Call Wrangler NW as I don't think the website list the brackets anymore. BTW you'll need to get a different pully or drill out the stock pully. The pully on the Mustang Alternator is a Serp Belt pully. You could just go by your local Alternator Rebuild shop and find a pully with roughly the same diameter as yours to mount. Shouldn't cost you more than a few bucks. Make sure you keep the diameter the same, this is what determines whether or not your Tach will be accurate. Larry lwgrubbs(at)yahoo.com |
