Anybody have any experience updating the drive train on an older 2-door chassis? Currently have '74 w/3.5 & 4-speed. Bad compression, blown clutch, and tired of rebuilding those zenith/stromburg carbs (hence bad compression?). Could do complete eng/5-speed/xfer from Disco or D-90 but don't know about matchup of axles, mounts, accessories, wiring, etc. Lots of questions! On the other hand I've been told by a couple of sources that the Disco (D1 at least) chassis is the same as the RRC. In theory it's a matter of lifting one body off and dropping the other on. Simple right? lol Any advice before I send myself over the edge? |

If I were you, I'd do the following: 1. Make sure the body/chassis is in good operating order. 2. Keep the 3.5 V8 carb (fix it up) and the 4 speed manual (which is plenty strong) 3. Upgrade the axles inside the casing & slap on Lockers 4. Cut the wheelarches as much as you can (no rear door) 5. get a 2" OME lift 6. winch (centrally located to serve both front and back...) 7. other small stuff = Great Rig! |

Thanks for the advice. Body and chassis are only OK. Compression is down 30lbs in 3 cylinders(haven't done leakdown to tell if it's rings or valves). Hubs are leaking and the load leveller is missing. Just some of the reasons the Disco chassis is attractive but not sure I want the expense of ABS brakes, etc. The good news is the arches are already cut and flares were installed. It has an old style HD bull bar w/winch & skidplate. And it has dual side gas tanks (+/- 5 gallons each if memory serves)located under the driver and passenger seats with a filler neck on each side and the original aircraft style filler on the rr. Also the trans just had the main shaft replaced. You think it's a better choice than going to the 5-speed? BTW I have also considered the Edelbrock/Holley combo to replace the Zenith carbs but am still partial to FI(more experience w/electronics than jets). All in all it's just different enough that I can't/won't part with it. Thanks again for your input. |

Hi I have owned and done major work on a few grey market RRs. I still own a 1983 2 door. I would suggest you throw the stromburgs away!!! Go with an edelbrock carb and manifold, you will be very happy!(don't wast time with a holley) If your up for the project a chassis swap would be the best way to go!! A chassis from a the standard wheel base RR chasic or a Dicsco1 will bolt right under your body. I would go with a later model so you get the benifit of 24 spline axles, vented disc brakes, and an engine bigger than 3.5l ect. The ABS wouldn't have to be used with the new brakes you would just have plumb a few new brake lines and toss the ABS controler and sensors. To perform this swap you will need to put a 1 inch body lift on, or modify the trans tunnel! Also if dont want to perform the frame swap be advised the 5 speed won't just bolt into your truck because rover had a few differnt trans tunnels and you have the small one. Brian |

Thanks for the tip on the tunnel issue. I was told that some cutting was required for the shifter position but not the lifting (although it's in the plan). I've seen rolled Discos listed for +/- $2500 and it seems like the most cost effective way to go. But again I like the simplicity of my stripped down original. Your recommendation of the Edelbrock is interesting - have'nt heard anything for or against it before. If I remember correctly its cfm rating is slightly smaller than the Holley - think it would it handle a 4.6? I'd have to go to crank fire ignition I think. I'll have to look at that. Good info, thanks. Bill |

I have the Edelbrock set up on my current Rover and don't have anything but good things to say about it. The carb is a 500cfm and would be perfect for the 4.6. You could use a 650cfm but you would be giving up a lot of low end torque. I'm going to drop a 4.6 in real soon. If you drop the 4.6 in don't have to change your ignition over. Brian |
