I am considering blacking out my front hood a bit to help cut down on the sun reflection. Does this really make a big difference? Does anyone have a template, a paint suggestion or an idea on how to do it so it's not a hacked up job? Thanks.

Leave it dirty. It's cheaper.

P-
I am assuming from your answer that it really does not make a difference?

Don't assume,

I have a black range rover that almost never gets washed. I have no glare issues. Dull paint doesn't give off much glare.

I have seen blacked out hoods and apparently they do make a difference. I just wasn't willing to pay good money for one.

check out "Zaarour" in the trails/events, there is a Grey 2 door RR that I am changing the front tire, it has a blackout...so check it out...it was painted on.

Jen...

It was not "painted" on by kids...he owner got a a brand new hood from the LR dealer who was "throwing thing out", and painted it accordingly at a shop. So if you have the luxury of 2 hoods, why not? right?

go to a place that makes the stickers you see on the sides of commercial vehicles (usually done by combo sticker/sign shops). They can make and apply a big black sticker for cheap and if you ever decide you don't like it you can pull it off no harm no foul (assuming it wasn't on there long enough for the paint to fade around it). Just bring em a pic of what you want. I haven't done this personally so I cant personally vouch for the quality but I am seriously considering it based on the positive testimonials of several people.

I have a friend that works with me full time at a firedepartment and he does this on his days off MAKE stickers for a graphic shop he even did the ones on our fire trucks. He told me about 30 -50$ depending on the size some where in that range.

Word of advice, if you live in Hot climates this is a bad idea. I was in Moab last August. It was about 102 degrees on the rocks and one of our trucks had a hood blackout. The stickers on the blackout kit (Land Rover Oval) would bubble due to heat. Also his engine ran hotter than anyone elses. Hood was way to hot too touch. Get the picture. There is a reason the tops of the Defender roofs are white! Much cooler.

Larry

BTW Moab is very cool in the middle of the summer, no people at all. And it really is a "Dry" heat.

It not that much to have a shop shoot that center section in trim black, You perep and mask and it really not that much. and it will hold up much better than a blast of Krylon
