My wife and I have been traveling to Maine for vacation for the past few years and this time we're thinking about taking our boat and heading up to Moosehead Lake for some camping, hiking, and hopfully spotting some Moose. Nothinng to extreme as we'll have our little baby with us at hte time. He/she's due to arrive in March, and we're planning on taking him/her with us. We've been told that early June is a good time. Anyone have any other good info?

Thanks,

Zak

sheep....now moose. sick boy. by the way those 'moose' signs you see in VT and Maine are for tourists. they don't exist. they are like Bigfoot. you just hear of them. haha.
i only saw them once in VT and that was them crossing I-89.

Hey what you like to do out there in Amish country with those sheep and shrews is you buisness, and I don't need to be hearing about it! Give Richard Geere a call, I'm sure he'll be interested.

Zak,

While coming back to PA. from ECR in Warren, ME., we saw a few of the beasts on the roadside by the lakes that you pass by. Can't remember the route number, however, the time was in June and we were headed to Portland. Definately caught our attention as they are pretty cool in my book. The guys at ECR might also be able to help you out as they live there year round.

Hey Zak,

They don't exist until you t-bone one of those big ass hairy beasts with your Miata! I have seen them as far south as Freeport while on Thanksgiving Holiday.

For the record Zak, I am begining to worry about you. You know there is therapy for those who are more inclined towards animals that humans.....

Thanks Paul. I open my mouth one time to say I'd like to raise sheep, and I'm label on of "those" people. Hey, Garrett's the one that feels love knows no species. He'll bang anything that moves, and things that don't, ie a nice ginko tree!!!

I've just been to Maine a few times, and northern VT a bunch, and have yet to see one. We'd really like to pack up the Disco and boat next year, head up to Maine and do some fishing and moose sight seeing.

And my Miata will just go right under the moose :)

Yeah Zak,

Maine is a beautiful place to visit. As far as your Miata driving under the Moose; you had better pray that is not a well hung Moose! But then again, you might be into that....Have a nice day.

Black flies are terrible in June, Wait till end of july or August. That is the best time to visit Maine. Or the fall. Late sept or Oct.

Not to keen on being at places in the height of tourist season. We're usually there in mid to late June and early April. Maybe this year we'll hit it in the fall, do some fly fishing as well

a good friend of mine(larry Hanson, Hansons english river resort in Ontario) is a hunting outfitter.

back a buncha years ago he had a guide client that came in for a moose hunt. After a week of trudging through marshes on the english river they had seen no moose. the customer really wanted a moose so he decided to stay 1 more day after another rainy day on horse back no moose so larry decided to take him to one last spot. they tied up there horses and trudged down to a isolated beaver pond to once more find nothing.

as they where coming back out they heard the horses getting very upset. as they came into view they saw a 55"spread moose trying to mount one of the horses Larry told him dont hit the horse!

he got his moose

another moose story

back in 92 one of my buddies took a trip to Ganglers lodge in Canada, they were crossing the lake and one of them sighted a moose swimming across the lake .

when the Inuit indian guide saw it without saying a word he took off full throttle straight at it. on the way to it he cut off the anchor line and fashioned a noose he herded the moose into deep water using the boat and then pulled up next to it and put the noose around its neck he tied it off to the transome of the boat and started dragging the moose. by this point my buddie and his friend were freaked out. the moose quickly drown and just layed there getting dragged by the boat. the guide then dragged it into shallow water and tied it off to a tree on shore.

when they got back to the lodge they went straight to Mr Ganglers office and reported the incident. Mr Gangler apologized and said it had happened last week as well and those guests decided to leave camp right away.

he then went on to tell them that if they would have come back to camp and talked about seeing a swimming moose and the other guides(some were brothers of the guide)heard the story that that brother would have been shuned by his clan and if during winter they ran outa meat his family would be the first to go without meat and other food.

turns out that since they dont use weapons to hunt that a swimming moose is like striking gold and the meat from that moose is so important to the clan that a crappy job guiding rich fishermen is no big deal. Mr Gangler said he would never ask them to not do it in front of customers because then he would be outa guides and outa business.

I'm not trying to bash hunting here, but I've never really seen the point in hunting big game. I have hunted for many years until recently, I just can't do it anymore. Maybe some pheasant or quail but that's about it. I've never really seen the draw. I've been in a lot of long range competition shooting matches, anywhere from 100yds to 1000, and the thought of hiking or riding through the woods/ tundra for many days to kill a huge animal just doesn't do it for me, especially predators. Not trying to offend anyone, just don't get it. I can understand native's killing them for food and have no problem with that.

A buddy of mine was showing off his mountain lion he shot recently. What's the point of killing it i asked him, he told me the "sport". He shot it at around 25 yards with a pretty nice Rugar 77. At that distance, i could have killed it with alost any weapon. Oh well. Just my opinion.

Again, not trying to bash hunters, or start a riot here. I love shooting, but at paper.

Although it was a lot of fun taking Prarie dogs out at over 1000yds with a 50BMG. Got expansive fast though.

Moose? Ah hell, if that is the goal of the trip you need to come over to Utah. We have so many that the biggest problem is trying to avoid them on the roadway once the snow starts falling.

Ya, when I was in Alaska moose were all over the place. The only thing that out numbered them were the bald eagles. They were every where like sea gulls, crows, and canadian geese. I have never seen some many bald eagles before in my life and probably never will unless I go back.

But, the coolest things that I saw was the Wolves and the Alaskan Brown Bears

eric,

thanks for the pics. I actually looked at them a while back when you posted them. I'd love to get there some day. My wife and I are trying to plan a trip to see my Folks in Montana, then drive to Washington, and up to Canada, and across it back to the east coast. But that will probably be a few years as we're expecting our first child just like and your wife. When's she do again? And did you ever decide on a car seat?

She's due March 3rd (or so) and ya, we went with the Britax Roundabouts. One for her car and one for mine. That reminds me I need to call the local baby place to see if they got my Bertini M5 stroller in yet.

I'm hoping to get up to Alaska again next year in the winter to see the Iditarod and the Northern Lights I really liked Alaska. If I get laid off from here in January I may move to Juneau.

ok last moose story

in 94 I was on a spring bear hunt in english river Ontario. I was hunting a specific bear that had been doing damage and tormenting a small group of cabins near a isolated lake. I was very excited because the warden from the minestry of conservation told me that this bear was as big as the front of his suburban. I was also a little freaked because this bear had also not backed off when the people in the cabin shot over its head when it was outside there cabin.

I set up a bait site about a 1/2 mile from the cabin at a place called crash car where a mid fifties pontiac had driven all the way down to the end of a logging road and crashed into the beaver pond it dead ended into.

I had hunted this spot for almost a week and saw no bears even though the bait was getting hit all the time. this is usaully a sign that all the small bears are scared to be on the bait because the big bear is around.

one day I came in to find a blood bath where a small bear had been shredded and all that was left was the front end of the carcase!

the next day as I was coming into the site I heard a large crack from ahead of me. I stopped moved a couple yards off the trail and knelt down.

with my heart going about 180 beats a minute I heard another and another crack. I nocked a arrow and picked a small shooting alley on the trail I was suposed to walk in on because the sounds where coming closer. I was convinced I was gonna see this bear if I was ready or not.

crack crack crunch smash something was coming down the path straight at me. this area has a small tree about every square foot so I cant see a thing I drew my bow and held on my shooting alley waiting for my shot.

the woods shook as this huge moose came running down the small trail. I was in shock, I had no idea if it was running at me or just running down the path . it ran right by me with its knees right at head hight as I knelt frozen stiff in aw of the size of it. it couldent have been more then 4 feet from me when it passed.

I have stalked to bear a number of times and have taken a number of predators at close range, but nothing in my hunting expierience shook me up like that incident. so to answer Zaks earlier post thats why I hunt. the shear excitment of it.
being on 2 wheels puckered in a 4 wheel drive dosent even come close.

Wow, hunting bear with a bow. How far do you have to track them? When i use to hunt whitetail with a bow, usually they ran a good hundred yards or so.

I have taken three Bear with bow.

1 from a stand

last to on the ground stalking to them in berrie fields

all three were inside of 20 yards

allthough I have had to track a couple bears that friends shot

all three I have taken went about 15 yards

I shoot a Jennings carbon extreeme with a overdraw at 83lb draw. I try to get a quartering away shot because bear can take off like a rocket when you hit them.

the largest one I took while it was looking at another bear comming into the area from behind me,I thought it was chopping its teath at me and did not see the one comming up behind me(although my guide did) I took him through the shoulder, heart, right lung. there where parts of shoulder bone comming out the exit wound.

try to do that with 55lb draw and that bear may end up eating you.

the bear behind me took off straight ahead when it heard the sound surprising the shit outa me.

leslie,

no I never got the big one near the cabin, they shot it the following aug when it started messing with the cabin again. it weighed over 700 lbs

Last summer is was backpacking in Montana it was the last day of the trip and we were hiking to the pick up point when one of the group members mentioned that she was disappointed that we didn't see any moose to whole time, one of the guides then joked "don't worry Chris (the driver of the van picking us up) dresses up in a moose outfit and jumps out of the woods at us". Well no sooner did she say that did this hugh moose and it's calf come running out of this swampy area and into the hills on the other side of the trail. Scared the crap out of all of us. Talk about timing.
