Just wondering if anyone is going to the GWNF off of 33 by Harrisonburg at all during November? I haven't been there in a while and wouldn't mind seeing the trails again. I'll be heading up there sometime with my disco and a Fj-60 or two.

We usually go off roading between 3 and 4 weekends per month
Do be wary of driving in the creek beds as they are considered "off-trail"
all the best,

James:
There's a group going this weekend coming up, not sure of the specifics yet, but I think there will be 4 or 5 rigs.

Not going to the Trials any more Enoch? Michael, if you don't mind another tagging along shot me a email too. I don't think that I'm going to be making it to the trials in PA either.

Eric-
I just answered Mike's mail. Yes, I am going to the trials, I didn't realize the GWNF trip was THIS weekend. Sorry I'll miss it, but I'm headed to PA.

PS-
If you guys get serious over there this weekend, Go up Kephart Run trail all the way to the top. When you come to the waterfall/stair steps, go up those and let me know what you find! Last time I was there I went up them, but turned around and came back before figuring out if the trail was open beyond.

Ya, I'm still on the fence about whether I'm going to make it to PA on Saturday or not. I may have some things around the house to do as well. So I may just end up at home all day and not being able to do either (PA or GWNF). I won't know till later in the week so I'm just getting the details for things that are going on. So maybe I'll see you there and maybe I won't.

I'll be meeting up with them on Saturday Morning most likely...if all goes as planned. If anyone can't make it up on Friday, let me know. My Va Gazeteer follows the directions well but changes pages right where everyone is camping (I think). What color/style trucks am I looking for?
Thanks

Enoch,
According to one of my maps, Kephart dead ends. Have you heard otherwise?

James
p.s. When are you putting 33's on the Blue FJ? Koren needs a buddy for the trails!

James, Mike-
Not sure if it deadends or not. That's what I was hoping you guys could figure out! The stair steps/waterfalls are pretty scary, particularly coming down. But I don't know what is beyond that. The trail getting to that point is decent in spots. You could probably park at the bottom of them, and hike up above them a ways and see if it's worth it. I'm sure originally that road went all the way up.
Yes, Mike, I'd take a chainsaw.
And remember it is hunting season. Be polite to any guys you meet out there with guns!

I just remembered, we did that last time out up there. I was....ahem....the only one to make the stair step up (the only one who tried it too!). I ended up going another 200 feet or so up around the bend, definitely chainsaw terrain, but there is an old trail bed there that thins out precariously. If you wanted to make a trail-clearing-day out of it, you certainly could. We kind of theorized that it probably went all the way up to a feeder to FR72.

That's also where we once saw the nazis ==>.

Hey, anyone going to answer my questions!?! Hunters...I am one and am typically armed with at least a ppk .380acp. No problems. By the way, I'm only armed because it is my right and I have had an encounter with a bear.
p.s. Enoch, the 33 question was for you.

I think it is hunting season, but not full rifle season. That starts Thanksgiving week or the week before, I think. Still, be polite!

James, my fiance has resisted mightily to my attempts to "pimp" out her truck. The tires she has on there now are a set of 245/75 trac-edges from my disco. They are as big as she wants to go right now! Once I get her an FJ-80 next year sometime, she'll probably give me a little more leeway, though! :)

Mike, I would love to make a trail clearing day of it sometime. That's a sweet trail, and probably sweet further up because of lack of use.

I think that some OCC folks talked to the Ranger about that part of the trail. I believe that it used to be a trail the connected up to one of the others. They were asking the ranger if they could clear it and make it a trail again but, I never heard what ever happened with it. I would imagine that if the ranger gave them the go ahead it would have been cleared already. I think that the ranger wanted to see what they were talking about. Don't know for sure though since that is all third hand info. I would talk to the ranger though first before just going and clearing things. Wouldn't want to get yourselves into a lot of trouble for clearing something that they may not want cleared.

I'm not going to make it to GWNF this weekend. I told some folks that I would come up to the Trials in PA so I'm going to go up there once I figure out how to get there. Let me know next time you guys go down though cause I have been wanting to get out and do some camping.

Enoch,

Myself and a few others have always wanted to make the right fork trail (that currently ends a a ravine) go all the way to the top of the ridge (it used to). One day we cleared it as far as the ravine, but haven't yet spoken to the rangers about crossing the obstacle because it would mean felling a tree or two to make a bridge.

We've walked the trail, and it looks pretty straightforward once past that area.

Anyhoo - would be glad to help or play in any section of Kephart.

Bill

Bill- not sure about the ravine, and I vaguely do remember a fork in the road. I thought I had taken the right fork (parallelling the creek bed) and it led up to the steps/falls. Where I'm thinking doesn't really need a bridge as much as it needs a ramp! We may be on different branches of the trail. I'll try to contact the ranger station over there and see what they think about opening it. It's not gated at the bottom, so it may be a public right-of-way. I'll keep you posted. It would be a good weekend project.
Also, just to make sure we are talking about the right trail, Kephart run hits 33 at a right angle, west of second mountain and the entrance to Dictum's. Right before the bridge for the actual Kephart run.

Enoch,
Yep - I'm definitely talking about Kephart - if you take the right fork which is before you get to the rock step on the main trail it leads down across the creek bed and then up hill on an old trail that used to go all the way to the ridge, but no longer does due to the ravine.

I know where you mean on the main trail, just have never gone further than the spot where the trail merges with the creek.

Bill

Cool. Sounds like there may be more than one option. There is also a fork further down that goes up to the left, if I remember...
We'll have to check it out sometime. A log bridge would be great to build.

Someone please keep me posted if you go out anytime during the first of December. My fiance lives near Waynesboro and we would love to explore some of these trails you all are talking about...if my truck can do them! But until Dec. 1, I'm healing and traveling. Have fun!

Early December would work great for me to. Maybe the 7th or the 14th anyone?
Sus, glad you're still with us. If we are able to connect for a trip, I'll bolt that brushguard on for you.
Enoch
PS- Most of the trails over there would be fine for your truck... If you've taken off those silly side steps! :)

I might be up for some wheeling. I'll have to check with the other half though to see if she has leaf raking in mind for this weekend now that all the rain has knocked all the leaves off the trees.

Silly Side Steps have been removed! I'm ready! (Well, as long as I don't break anything!)

Enoch, do you have a picture of what the b.g. looks like? Is it the kind that you can mount Hellas in the middle of? I saw one like that the other day and really liked it!

Ya, Enoch, I'm still up for the 14th.

rovrboy, I can't do this weekend (I'll send you an email) but, next weekend is looking good though. I'm going to see if Mike wants an extra person for the trip he was trying to set up. I got leaves to rake and cutters to clean this weekend.

I didn't do all the trails, but I believe they were Kephart, Dictum, Dry river and a few others. I heard that there were a bunch of Jeeps at the end of Kephart clearing a trail. I'm up for the December trip.

We didn't do Dictum on Sun, but we did do it on Sat afternoon, or at least we made a try to get up. We didn't go all the way on Kephart on Sun, either fork (we turned around at the hill climb to nowhere), so I don't know what's left of the right fork. One jeeper told us his crew was up the left fork going up the "rock slide".

FWIW, Second Mtn is still closed at the bottom, but you can get in from the top if you want.

Count me in for a Dec trip!

Susannah-
If you're bringing an Exploder we'll have to run separate trails!!!!
Just kidding. Depending on what ability trucks show up will determine a little bit of where we go, and we can split up some. But for the most part stock trucks can do most of the trails.
