I am starting to seriously look for a 92 or 93 SWB and need to find out problem areas/what to look for on these. Also are there any recalls I need to make sure are taken care of? If I were to find a LWB or newer classic and wanted to convert to coil springs, how expensive is it and what is the best way to go (EMU)? I am in the US - midwest. Thanks, Jeff |

Check out www.rangerovers.net. Great articles on what to look for on "Classics" as well as what changed with each model year. Coil spring conversions are not too expensive $350-$400 (parts only). I changed the shocks and springs on my 88RRC myself. If you are a good shade tree you can do the same. The type of spring/coil arrangement really depends on what you want the vehicle to do, off road, mostly highway, pulling, loads, etc. OME makes a good shock, so does Bilstein. Good Luck -John |

Thanks John, I've browsed that site quite a bit. That is how I decided on a 92 or 93. Newer would be ok also if price and coil spring conversion wasn't too $$$. Any idea what you'd have to pay someone to do the conversion? I'm a decent shade tree mechanic, but don't have a garage to work in right now. Also I heard the 3.9 had the least worries, does the 4.2 have any problems? or the LWB for that matter? It would be mostly for road use with some gravel/dirt and a twice yearly trip out west for some mining roads. Also will use to pull MC trailer. Jeff |

More rear leg room in the LWB version. The extra length wheelbase probably would be a help for stability when pulling a trailer. On my 4.2, a piston head got burnt from something I guess the previous owner did. Don't know if its common or not though. Gave me a good reason to put in a 4.6 motor. Jaime |

i'm also shopping for an older RRC. in terms of engine 3.9 vs 4.2... they will most likely be high mileage engines by the time we get them anyways, and will require lots of TLC to keep them alive. as for 4.2... were only available on LWB models. good luck han roverless |

Buy a 1991 or older. Less complicated (no air suspension). I'm pleased with the 3.9 in my 91 rover as long as I don't have to go anywhere up hill fast. I'm a firm believer in "as slow as possible as fast as necessary". With that said, however, the 4.2 would be nice in certain situations, i.e., for towing and when driving in sand. c.neal |

i just got a 94 lwb. the service records show the coil spring conversion was done in april at a cost of about $2k here in the bay area. i'm getting the transfer case worked on now for about $1.5k. everything seems to be in working order. |

$2k??? DOLLARS!?!?! Holy Smokes! I've seen that conversion done for under $500 at an independent shop paying real labor rates. -P |
