Just a question...what did everyone drive before they got a land rover? How did you know that you wanted one?

I drove a F**d Bronco II XLT before and I think I beat it to death, or it beat itself to death. Before that I drove a Honda Accord.

I first knew I wanted a Land Rover when I was a junior in high school and went to visit the WVU campus. We stopped off at the Greenbrier resort to take a look see. In the parking lot, I saw a white Defender 110 and knew it was love at first site. Had to have a Rover right then and there. Well, 7 years later, I have one and have much to learn about it, but I love it.

I had a 71 corvette (when I was 15), then at 17 got a VW fast back with a 911 engine in it, then at 18 I got a 88 Chevy Berretta.. Then in 95 I bought a new eclipse turbo.. then in 98 I bought the Disco.. Have always liked to go hunting and camping and would always ride along with friends in their trucks.. Finaly just went out and got one of my own.. I love the Disco but, I still want another car.. So when the Disco is paid for I'm getting some thing small and fast for every other day use.. Oh, and a bike cause everybody keeps telling me I'm going to kill myself on one so I need to have one just to prove them wrong... :)

well i will follow eric's lead, when i was 16 i had a 65 mustang fastback (very red). then a 69 ford truck. followed by years of mindless stupid american made cars til i bought a few VW's then a few more years of stupid US made cars then a VW Passat which was destroyed in a head on with a bronco II. one nite while on patrol i found my 94 on a local car dealer's lot and well i had to have it. i didnt buy it at first but spent several nites driving thru that lot til i gave into the erge and bought it.

I drove a 93 Nissan 240 sx hatchback. Great little car for the buck. Had if for 8 years, rarely changed anything and still going strong it's 3rd owner but like Eric I needed to be able to take the vehicle off road for camping, etc.

I had a 94 Wrangler while I was in college. I guess you could say I upgraded. Hey Eric, My disco (97) was paid off two months ago and I cracked it up on Valentine's day. Just got it back yesterday. I would send anyone to EuroSport Autobody in Springfield/Lorton for body work. Mine looks and rides great. Except the big tires rubbing in the wells.

like many here i started with a trooper (1991) , i still have much lover for the trooper...

i still love the way the back seats went down.

poor man's 110 it was.

when i first wanted one was in 1992 i saw an ad for the 110 and had instant wood. i saved the magazine (omni) and still have it. some years later i saw an add for the disco showing some camel trophy footage of a disco coming out of a water whole and doing an endo into the dirt. it stoped , bounced and then they drove on.. after seeing that i had to have one, figuring it had to be tuff if they would show that in a commercial.

I had an '86 Toyota 4Runner that i got my senior year of high school. Had it through college till I drowned it in a river crossing. Never quite ran the same, so bought a cheap Cavalier and had that for a year, till graduation, then bought my 95 Disco. I still have much love for those early 4Runners. My hs graduation gift from my dad was a softtop for it. It died in the river with 199k miles on it. Still ran, just not quite as well, and I didn't have the money, knowledge, or resources to get it back to normal. But still sold it 4 years after I bought it for almost same price I paid.

I'm actually on my 3rd Disco.. Got my wife a 98 in late 98 then traded it late 99 for a conversion van after we had our first child.

*MY* last car before *MY* 1st Disco was a black '93 240sx convertable which I sold in 2000 to my sister's future inlaws. As Daniel pointed out, it was a great car. (Quick for a 4cyl!!)
It had 87k on it, and still ran awesome.

My 1st Disco was a 97 DI, which got totaled in Oct, 2000. I replaced it w/ my 2nd Disco, a 2001 DII.

I live out in the boonies (between Richmond & Charlottesville, VA) and got stuck waaaay to many times at home when it snowed. I've got a long gravel driveway and a RWD car just doesn't cut it, no matter how much weight I put in the trunk. :)

We got rid of my wifes conversion van a few months ago and got her a minivan... and she's telling me now that she wants a Disco, so we may get another one soon. I'll prob give her my DII and get myself a 97 or so...who knows?

It's *REALLY* nice to know that if there was ever an emergency with us or our kids, that regardless of the weather conditions, we can leave the house without a problem.

I had an Isuzu Rodeo.

The Rodeo hooked me on the SUV thing, but I wanted something nicer, better built, and having never owned a 4x4 I wanted that too. I figured this out about a month after I got the Rodeo when I hydroplaned at 75 mph accross a highway (no damage, by the grace of GOD). I realized that my previous vehicle (POS 1990 chevy truck) would have never done that so I thought about another truck, but was already hooked on the SUV idea.

Did research on what was the rolls royce of SUV, and found Range Rover. Figured out that Range was out of my price range, so I looked to Discovery. Took a little sofening up to the looks, but I went to the dealer and saw the interior for the 1st time. When I saw the stadium seating, and 2 sunroofs, I was SOLD. waited about another 6 months to get the Rodeo off my back, and stumbled onto my '97 for a good price and TOOK IT!!

Oh yea, it also helped that NO ONE else I knew had one, and a lot of them didn't even know what they were (it's good to be different).

When I bought this one I still didn't know much about them, but I am a Rover owner for life now!

Had a Toyota Celica (college), an F 250, (and along the way, several company sedans), and in 1989 - Trooper (it was awesome). Thanks to the company cars, the Trooper only had around 83K (i think) miles on it when I finally sold it last year (to a great kid - his first vehicle - I gave it to him with good BFG's, perm. mounted cobra CB w/ a K40 whip that I had a perm. mounting bracket for on top, ... I dunno, I am just very sentimental about that old truck). I've always liked Land Rovers, just wasn't sure about the new ones. I no longer drive company cars, and it was time to get a vehicle I could haul people around in, and still get some good offroad use with. Because I plan on keeping it a long time, (and I am 'mechanically challenged', lol) decided to buy new (something i don't usually do). Land Rover, Disco2 fit the bill just right. :)

Patrick: "My disco (97) was paid off two months ago and I cracked it up on Valentine's day."

Sorry to hear that ... I can (well, kind of) relate ... A little reversed .. On Valentines Day, I (unintentionally) took my Rover, and bashed my husband's car with it (backing out of garage - unaware that he had parked in driveway :() .."Valentine's Day Massacre"??

I had a '93 Dodge Dakota V8 Extended cab (2x4). Ever since I got married ('90) I purposly avoided 4x4's because I knew what would happen (I have owned 4 assorted 4 by's in the past-ranging from a Dodge Power Wagon, '70 Bronco, to Suzuki Samuari's). I would always see Disco's in traffic and comment to my wife that if I ever got an SUV (I know, I know-they're NOT SUV's), that's what I wanted because they were built to go off-road.

When it came time to replace the Dakota for something that could carry 4 adults, I started shopping for a 4-door truck. Saw a '97 DSI in a CarMax lot and was surprised at the price, so I started shopping around.

Then I remembered that a neighbor of an old friend went to high-end auctions. A few calls later and he was looking for my Disco. I ended up with an '00 DSII for what the dealer wanted for a '98 anniversary edition. I haven't been the same since!

A whole bunch of different lead sleds - Buick, Olds, Cadillac......then I moved to Colorado and the fresher air started to help clear my thinking and things started to get more fun. Since then:
'76 IH Scout
'78 IH Scout
'92 Full size 2DR Blazer (gorgeous truck, but not worth shit off road)
And currently a '95 Disco and my wife has a '98 Wrangler.

Lemme see....my first car was a smokin' '65 Mustang, 289. Cost $500.00, and when I say smokin', I mean it in terms of speed off the line, and SMOKE out the tail pipe! Fill 'er up, and I'll take a quart of oil with that, too.

I then had a quick succession of VW bugs. Three in a row, two accidents (people kept hittin' ME!) killed the first two, and I sold the last one to buy another Mustang, a '72 as I recall. Then I bought a year-old Honda Civic, the newest car I'd ever had at that point. That was the second model Civic made, not the first tiny one, but the early '80's slightly larger one. Loved that little thing, and cried when I sent it off to scrap land. Bought my first new car in 1987, a Volvo 240 DL, stripped to the bone, not even a radio. Staggeringly expensive at $16K and change, LOL! Also bought a 1987 GMC dually pick-up about the same time. We still have them both. Bought only my second-ever new car when I got the 2001 Disco in August 2001. Hands-down my fav ever vehicle. We've also had several motorcycles through the years, as well as too many horses to remember .

OMG, I forgot one! We had an old IH Travelall, too! That was a mess and we loved it, LOL! Bought it in a package deal with our first horse trailer, another awesome toy made in England. Had a rear-ender with that trailer, packing a show pony on the Washington Beltway. The back ramp wouldn't go down when we got home, so it was a lucky thing we had a Rice trailer as it was the only one that had a front off-loading ramp. Everyone laughed at our Rice, as it looked like some bizarre military vehicle, but it was the BEST! And all aluminum, too, (except for the gorgeous mahoghany flooring) which was unheard of at the time. Damned quirky British machines, I love 'em!

My First car was a '78 Alfa Romeo Spider. Bought it off a guy while he was shopping for a minivan. He was about to have twins. That car was awesome and great with the girls! My sister later on drove it in a flood and it never ran the same. Moved on to a '84 Mustang SVO. That was a fun car! Then I bought a Ford pick 'em up truck. Hated it! When my wife and I got married, we sold both of our cars to purchase a 2000 VW Passat. This car was the best!

Well, we moved to Colorado and wanted to get in the great outdoors. The Passat just isn't built for much more than a black top road. We traded it in for our '96 Disco. I was in love! My wife cried. The Passat was her first *new* car and she was very attached. The Land Rover has since won her over, and I have a hard time getting her out of the driver's seat.

Before my Disco I drove a '77 Toyota Landcruiser FJ-40. I loved this vehicle more than any I'd ever had. It had a Toyota straight six and a holley carb that never really ran right. It was desert tan with a black soft-top. It got maybe 2 or 3 miles to the gallon and when people talk about the rough ride our disco's have I can't stop laughing! I lost her to rust years back, but was going to put a new aluminum tub on her when a friend told me about her friend with a Land Rover, that was gonna be traded in. I was under the impression that it was a Defender and I was familiar with this truck. It already had an aluminum body and a strong V-8. I raced over to the friends house to see it before she traded it in, and to my surprise saw a Discovery. Discovery??? I said to myself, aaaawwww man! That's a Soccer mom's car! No Thanx! I went home bummed out and sulked all the way home.

When I spoke to my friend the next day, she said that the dealer didn't offer them much for it, and even though it wasn't the model I wanted I should consider it. While I was there I did drive it, because I had driven sooo far to see it and didn't want to show my disappointment. It did ride real nice! And I said to myself, I am getting older and I need to mature! I didn't like the look of the vehicle and I hated the color (white). But something inside me was telling me to buy it! To make a long story a little bit longer, I did. And then I found out how cool I could make it look! I had never seen a lifted, tricked out Disco before buying it, and was really happy to find out I didn't have to sacrifice too much of my cool (LOL). Now I'm very in love with my Disco and look forward to driving her everyday. But every once in a while I think about my 40. Love is crazy!

"some years later i saw an add for the disco showing some camel trophy footage of a disco coming out of a water whole and doing an endo into the dirt. it stoped , bounced and then they drove on.."

Best commercial ever.

I had (actually still have) a 1990 accord with a bigillion miles which I have not used the clutch in 5 years.

Had a 1979 IH scout II with the 345 and a 727. I only got to put the last few of its 500K+ miles on it .

I hate the accord, too reliable. Decided the scout was too complicated so i bought a series truck in pieces and Alyssa bought the disco.

Then came the 110 project and the rangie.

I had a 1987 Ford Ranger that was a very sturdy little truck. It was 2WD, but had high ground clearance and a high torque, 2.9L V6. It would go places where most of today's SUVs can't go, Land Rovers excepted, of course. I continued driving it even after getting the Discovery, until, after 10 years and 257,000 plus miles, it finally developed a crack in the cylinder heads. I still wish I could have kept that truck.

I had an '86 Ford Taurus as my first car, it was given to us by my grandma. I got that when i was 16. Six months later my dad believe I was a good driver and I got a 96 Isuzu Trooper. I really loved that car. Probably the best SUV when it comes to on road uses...ie the space and all. Well, that got totalled 5 months after i got it (It wasn't my fault) so I pushed my parents really hard and ended up with a 97 Black D1, which I've had for the past 5 months or so. I really love it....my gf calls it "her replacement," which is pretty good when you're only 17. Haha, i'm ready for marriage....

I bought a '86 Jeep Cherokee shortly after we were first married, when had a baby and luggage that we were carrying between our apartment while we were in college and back home at our parents for visits. It was really a cool station wagon, for how we used it. But, I started going off-road a bit with it, and then a bit more... finally got to where I would go off-road and get stuck, and would have to find a farmer with a tractor to pull me out.

It was somewhere along in there... I found a calender of a D90 being chased by a rhino. "Wow!" I thought.... I really wanted one of those.... it brought back memories of Marlin Perkins and Daktari, etc. etc.. So, I went online to find out about Land Rovers... and had the typical college-student sticker-shock. lol....

But, I "discovered" about Series Land Rovers in the process. So, I started researching about 'em, and very quickly became hooked. Lurked on RN's board, back when it was the good place to be (back before even British Bulldog was started). Ended up making some friends who lived not too far away, and drove up to visit them to check out their Series Rovers.

Couldn't find one I could afford at the time, though, so I had bought an older Jeep Wagoneer... MUCH better offroading than the Cherokee, more power, more comfortable... it's really what got me thinking about having a nice vehicle for driving around and off-roading, too...

So, I had 2 Jeeps, was in grad school, still lurking on Rover boards, then finally found a cheap Series, and got it. It was rough.... it still is, actually... but I loved it in a way that the Jeeps just didn't inspire, even though it was more coarse than the Jeeps, it had a lot more charisma, or personality.... So, I had three vehicles, all of them for offroading.

The Cherokee had racked up some serious mileage, and had had several problems. And, it just wasn't loved anymore. So, we sold it. Then, the big Jeep started having problems... the tranny was dying, not long after an engine replacement. The shop had butchered the installation, which is when I started doing my own work because I quickly figured out that I could do a better job than those incompetent monkeys that botched the swap.

Then, I finally got out of school and got a real job. Instantly, I was thinking about a Disco, but really didn't think that I could get the wife on-board... she really wanted another Cherokee. But, when I showed her a Disco in a parking lot one day, she was intrigued... so, I did some shopping, and finally found the right Disco, and jumped on it. Glad I did, because the tranny in the Jeep died the day before I took delivery.... lol....

So, I now have an 88" Series III Rover which is a rolling restoration (that's really not started yet, just keeping it moving as of yet), and my Disco as my main commuter.

Bored yet?? :)

I had a Ford Cortina (this is in the UK now) mark 3, till it rusted away and I could feel the screwdriver poking into my feet during the MOT test.

Then a mark 4 cortina, for a few years till I blew up the engine.

Then in 88 I got my Series 3, hard top, and aseries 3 canvas top, until I either crashed them or had to sell them beause of economy.

In this country, a nissan quest (minivan) which we got free, and now the lexus LS 400 (oh man, what a dream car) and the discoII.

'79 Datsun 4x2 4 speed truck 131,000 miles
'90 Nissan 4x2 5 speed truck 120,000 miles
'98 Dodge Dakota 4x4 auto .318 30,000 miles

The Dodge was my first 4x4 vehicle and was very powerfull. The turning radius was huge making it difficult to navigate on some trails. However, I became victim to MOPAR's lack of reliability and traded it in for my '00 DII.

1970 Pontiac LeMans Sports Coupe ($500 from my uncle and lasted until it selfdestructed)
1985 VW Jetta GLI (AWESOME car. Sold it when I moved across the country)
1978 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Coupe (when repairs exceeded it's original cost, I dumped it)
1989 VW Golf GL (cracked block 2 months after the end of warranty)
1995 Dodge Dakota (3 cracked heads over 4 years. sold it the week before my extended warranty ended)
1999 Nissan Frontier 4x4 (just returned to Nissan this month as a lemon after 18 months of lawyer negociations)
1965 Series IIA SWB (my daily driver/rolling project)
1997 Discovery SD (my wifes truck)

I saw my first Series trucks in Tahiti in 1983, but until I moved to LA in 2000, I had NEVER seen one in the US. I liked them a lot, I assumed they weren't around. I wanted either an old Kaiser CJ, a IH Scout, or an early Bronco.

I saw my first Disco in Anza Borrego in 1994. We were in a 1968 Kaiser Jeep and it had to be the hottest day I've experienced out there. Three Disco's drove by, bone stock, with the passengers in total comfort and very yuppy-esque. Suddenly off roading with A/C didn't seem that bad. Never thought I would afford one though. As I don't window shop, I never realized the depreciation they suffered.

Then, in March 2001, while hunting for a IIA in Arizona (visiting my parents) for myself as the Nissan was parked, my dad (who is perpertually car shopping) took me to LR Scotsdale where we saw a 1997 SD with 35k miles and a LR extended warranty for $23k. I offered them $19k and they said no. I went back to LA and shopped around. My dad called me a few weeks later and said the truck was still for sale and that they were having a big sale. I called up, made my offer again, and told them I would be on the next plane out if they said yes. They agreed, I flew out on the next $99 South West flight, bought the truck and drove it the 360 miles home. My wife had just sold her Z3 as she was now too pregnant to drive it and had no idea what I was doing. All she knew was that I had found her a new "car". She had expressed an interest in an Xterra or a Rodeo. Big surprise when I pulled into the driveway. She fell in love with it immediately.

The Golf, Dakota, and Frontier were all bought new. I will never do that again.

And that's my story.

What a long strange trip it’s been

1975 Cosworth Vega (My first car I paid like $50 or 100 for it the owner could not get it to work, the gas gauge was broken and it was out of gas)
1966 Volvo 122s (I loved this car but it had to go due to the Damn SU carbs)
1966 Volkswagen bug Autostick (no clutch kind of cool but never worked right)
1975 750 Kawasaki Triple cylinder H2 (almost killed several times on this)
1985 Nissan truck 2wd (good truck traded for the next vehicle)
1955 Willys Jeep CJ5 (Dropped in a 350 and a Saginaw tranny in would lift the front tires off the ground I owned the vehicle the longest about 10 years)
1987 Chevy blazer the small one (Piece O shit, I bought it when it was three years old with 30,000 miles, then had to replace the Tranny, transfer case, fuel pump, entire fuel injection sold it with a knocking rod a year after I bought it)
1979 Toyota 4x4 truck (pretty sweet truck, had AC, power steering, power brakes it came with a plaque that said #251 of 850 4WD limited edition)
1981 Jeep CJ5 bought it in 2000 W/ 25,000 mile’s from a friend of the family.

Current vehicles

1970 Ford Bronco (was going to restore but selling to pimp out the disco)
1994 Yamaha XT 600
1981 Yamaha 175 2stroke (wife’s trail bike)

I always wanted and still want a defender but they are a little pricey, I bought my Disco when I went to look at defenders and test drove the disco and went on the off road track they had at the dealer and I was sold

My list is fairly short.

'89 Wrangler with a testy carb.
'94 Grand Cherokee.
'97 Discovery XD with an ever growing list of goodies.

Of course that Disco is by far my favorite. I am another Rover Owner for Life. :)

My first car was a 1972 Pontiac T37 LeMans it was a hand me down from my sister who got it from my dad who got it from my grandmother. Needless to say by the time I got it nothing worked right. One night the wire harness shorted out and part of the electrical system incinerated it self. Went out that weekend and found the perfect brand new 1984 Dodge 4x4 pick up. It now has 184,000 on it and I still have it. Two years later I bought my aunts 1969 Mustang Mach 1 with only 56,000 on the clock. Great car, fast too, a real head turner. Still have that too. In 1998 I needed a car to get me back and fourth to college. After looking at a lot of junk I stopped in at the local Land Rover dealer and test drove a 1996 Disco1 with 22,000 miles. A few days later I returned and bought it.

My girl friend wants to know why guys remember more about the cars they drive then the women they date/marry. (If I say whats on my mind now she might hit me)

-86 Honda Accord
(great first car, but too small.)

-92 Ford Explorer
(2wd... don't ask; great for what it was.)

-1965 Series IIA
(This is the truck that almost was. I became interested in rovers when my friend went looking for an old truck he could work on himself. I began looking for something similar for myself and discovered the older series trucks. After weeks of searching and reading about Land Rover I found the 65 on LRX. My Dad, he must have been crazy, agreed to come with me to get it. We hooked up a 20ft trailer to his F-250 Diesel and drove through the night. I still can't believe he took a day off of work to drive non-stop through the night to get an ancient beat up rover. That was a good trip. Well we got there and the series had $2k worth of damage that I wasn't told about. I didn't have the money to fix it and left broken hearted; especially since my Dad came all the way with me. It was cool though, he agreed that we should wait and find a better truck and we had a great time just making the trip.

-97 Jeep Wrangler
(OK, so it wasn't quite a series, but it fit the budget and did not need any work done. I started saving for an older series and kept looking. I really did enjoy the Jeep, but it was a killer on long drives)

-00 Discovery II (Current truck. I had enough money to finally get a rover, but I decided on the Discovery over the older series. I wanted something I could go to a wedding in and tackle the mountains with equal class. I bought the Disco the day after Christmas of 2001 from a family moving to Switzerland on the 29th. I still plan on getting an older series as a second truck, but need to save up the $ first.

Other toys - 1959 Austin Healey 3000 - being restored, 1957 MGA - very rough but couldn't resist at $700.

'93 Jeep Cherokee Country. Decent vehicle off-road. I think the unibody flexing all the time wore the vehicle out. I had broken door hinges, all kinds of little things breaking.

'96 A4 Quattro. Great car. Not a speed demon, but built like a tank; no rattles at all in over 50K miles.

'97 Grand Cherokee POS. In the very light off-roading I did, I wasn't impressed with the creaking of the vehicle when the car was flexing. In 65K miles, I had two water pumps go out, and all other kinds of problems. Not very impressed with the tcase.

I wanted to have a vehicle that I could take off-road and yet be able to take my wife out to dinner. I wanted a truck that had a frame and solid axles. This led me to the Disco. For what I use it for, there really wasn't any other option.

73' Series III, NADA - bought 2 yrs ago as frame, running gear, and wheels. Had never sat in a Series truck before. Rolled it into garage, and barefoot -6 month preggo wife says "What the hell is that?" I say, "Honey I can rebuild it". 3 mos. later new child. 6 mos later Series 3 is operational - sleep is optional. Now a daily driver b/c I don't make time to fix the easy stuff on the other vehicles. Now have to let go of a vehicle and and buy a minivan. NOOooooooo.

Mine is an example of the third world:
1982-today: 1959 J**p (million of kilometers, headaches and adventures)
1995-2001: 1995 Fiat 147 (smallest&cheepest car)
2001-today: 1998 Disco TDI (Reason: off roading with my old J**p is to strong for babies...)
With this background, you may figure that I feel me driving a rocket!
Greetings from Argentina
