i have owned my range rover 1989 for 1 year now and i still cant figure out the heater controlls. at least i thiunk i understand them, i just cant get it to blow the way i wasnt. i cant ever get hot air to blow thru the vents, though it seems to say i can in the book. i am reading about people replaceing heater fans and thing, is this what i need? or does the range rover simply not blow air thru the vents? the door lock, when i unlock the doors using the passenger side key, should they all unlock? mine doesn't thanks rob |

Rob, You won't be able to get hot air through the vents in our model years! Back them Europeans only allowed heat in defrost or floor heat mode. They didn't want the driver to get too comfortable I guess. So I'm afraid you're stuck with cold air on your face. The passenger door lock should unlock/lock all locks if memory serves. Damn it, now you got me guessing. Maybe someone else can chime in on this one! |

Rob, mine does not unlock all doors from the passenger side. Here's a few things I learned about the heating system: If you want heat make sure the "interior air circulation" is on, if not you will get cold air from the outside. In the summer it's the reverse. Remove the air vents one by one and see if the tubing behind them are seated properly. There should be tubing behind the vent farthest to the left and to the right. The middle ones have no tubing: poor design especially in the summer when you need that AC... Do your fans turn on in all four positions? There is a relay on the firewall (inside engine compartment) for the fans. Make sure the connectors are clean. In summary, yes, hot air does blow out thru the vents, maybe not enough air ... Good luck and remember to carry an extra blanket. |

well, i get hot air comming thru the far left and right mini vents that are designed to defrost the side windows. i get heat on the floor and windows as per the position of the far right knob. the book indicates, i beleive that io should be able to run with the air conditioning on, except poush teh lever to hot air, and i should get hot air thru the vents... just like i did with my disco. the switch on the bottom left has 4 positions, recerculate, fresh air, blend and air cond i think it it is on the 3rd setting "blend" shown with both blue and red arrows on the label. that i should get air. i have alkso read about a "blend" motor for the range rover.. i am wondering if maybe this is bad... i get 4 fan speed positions. with air cond on, they all work, with it on recirculate (aka heater only mode) i can go the first two settings and then on # 3 & 4 the thing vibrates badly, but the heater does spin faster. rd |

The passenger side does NOT unlock all doors, just that side. It's a luxury car, but not THAT luxury. It's just like they didn't put in a one touch button control for the passenger side front window, even though the driver has it. This diagram explains it better:
Mhhh...maybe this says it better:
As for the heater, the switch on the left bottom goes (left to right) AC, AC blend (AC in the vents and heat to the WS and feet), fresh air and then recirc. My understanding is when on just AC, the heat vents close, so you have just AC coming through the front vents (this point is moot on my truck as my AC is dead). Then AC blend allows you to have ambient air go to the windsheild and feet if you want. Then straight through vent which also allows heat to the WS and feet, and finally the full on just heat recirc to the WS and feet. If you look at the next diagram you will notice the heater core only has 6 hoses. 2 to the side windows defrost, 2 to the WS defrost, and two for feet. So it CAN'T blow through the vent, which is just from outside or AC.
Hope that helps. pwc |

DAMN, as i figured. the good news is nothing is broken then! bad news is the range rover had a jack ass design the heating. no more chapped knucles throught the winter becasue of heat blasting on them. rd |

but at least you can have AC blasting in your face so that when you're eating an ice cream cone in the winter it won't melt but your feet and windsheild will be nice and toasty. |

My pass side unlocks all via the key . It is a '92 though it may be different than yours . I didn't really check the schematic but the instructions don't mention unlocking from pass side external lock only interior pass and rear doors , unless ofcourse I misread it . Ed |

edh, You're right, the 92 has both front unlocking according to the manual
And these diagrams from the 90-94 are essentially the same as for the 89, but they explain the air flow quite a bit better.

Rob, You might be able to just take the vent tubes that go to the rear feet and punch two holes into the "air box" that is for the front vents and pipe it in there. Otherwise, maybe run those rear foot hoses all the way up into that box and put them right at the two vents closest to your hands. The tubes are about half the size of the vents so you wouldn't be sacrificing cold air in summer. I would hesitate to take air away from the windshield because of fog. my 2cents pwc |

well jamie.... i got this pesky heater core leak and it causes the windows to fog on humid days. so my thought on this whole thing was, when i tear the dash out to do the core. i might as well fix everything else. but as it turns out, it's not broken it's just a shitty design. so now i am dreaming up ways to convert the thing into what i want. i have the range rover manual, i need to pour thru it and see what i come up with. i might have to get creative with a hole saw. ah, the beauty of having a beater truck i hope it will be cold.. the past few weeks have been 40 is and rain, all damn day. if it were a bit colder it would be snow. when snow falls on my i dont get we. it is fun to go play in snow. playing in drizzle is unfun. i want cold snow and lots of it or gimmie back the heat and sun. rd |

I used my heater for the first time (this year) yesterday morning. Arizona is funny like that - you twist the temp thing from cold to warm and you hear a crack and all this dust drops out. Like opening an ancient Egyptian sarcophagus. Windshield wipers are the same... |

according to this chart from the weather.com seattle gets 0.1" inches of rain more than pittsburgh, and the damn tempature is colder here. you might get more rain in the winter, but but it's probably just comming down harder... rain is rain, and it does it all damn year here, but you get dry in the summer. so i think seattle and me are alright.

You're a bit wrong there on the rain. And I know this for a fact because I used to look at here and Chicago, which are about as close. It's PRECIPITATION, not rain. So in the winter when it's raining here, it's snowing there. Look at your average highs for Dec, Jan and Feb. All but one are BELOW our average LOW!! So where we get 2x as much precip those three months, it's 90% rain (in Seattle proper anyway) and yours is 95% snow, I'm guessing. I don't mind the cold at all, in fact I prefer it to humid hot. That's another reason I couldn't live back there. Visited in August this last year and also go married back there in May of 1999 with 90+ weather which makes us Puget Sounders wilt. Especially in a tux. Once again, 1 week was enough for me at a time. And the final point is we are about 7 degrees further north than you, meaning today we get 35 minutes less day light than you and it only gets worse towards Christmas. pwc PS Plus our state has a Rainforst that gets 130" a year average, so there! |

BTW, in the winter it doesn't come down harder like it will there in the summer sometimes. It's just more constant. Maybe I'll set up a webcam in my window office and let you see how many days this winter have rain in them. pwc |

Rob, If you really want hot air on your hands, perhaps simply rerouting one of the heater or defroster hose through the vent closest to your hands is the answer! |

How about 53 FEET of snow a year on Mount Rainier. How about 4 feet of ASH when one of our mountains blows? Ok, so you could probably live here. At least you wouldn't have to fix your heater vents then!! pwc |

Rob, I do have some bad news for you. There is something broken or at least breaking. You said that on the two highest positions you have insane vibration. That usually means that yor fan is damaged. It is a squirell cage fan the width of the heater box. It is has a shaft that runs through the center of the box with a bearing on the left, and a allen screwed coupler to the motor. If you are getting vibration, you have either a dented cage, (people drop the weirdest things into vents) warped shaft, or loose coupler. The fan and motor come as one unit. At a cost upwards of $400.00. If you decide to replace it when you do your core, it's no big deal labor wise. Just make sure that you do a run-out on the new part, as they have a habit of coming warped/dented in shipping. Also check the heater box mounting points, 4 of them on the firewall. They are rubber isolated mounts, and could be loose, but I doubt it. I have seem more with broken bent fans. j |

so what everyone is saying is that there is no heat from the worlds best four wheel drive vehicle? or is my ac unit screwed? should the compressor be spinning when engaged. cold air blows through the facia vents all the time. is there a flap open or some thing. you would think that you could at least stop the cold air from blowing in. |

Heater broke on mine the day I bought it, spilled greasy fluid all over the interior passenger footwell and soaked the carpet padding. After drying it out and bypassing the heater connectors in the engine with an 180 degree turn hose. It's all been well since. Since I live in Miami, there's really no need for a heater, I was reading about the rain in some parts of the country, I think we measure the rain here in Meters not inches or fractions of inches. But I read about this small device in a JC Whitney catalog, plugs into the cigarette plug and heats up your car thru heating a small ceramic box with a fan in it, supposed to heat up the truck, what do you guys think? I've driven to Colorado in late August and it was a bit cold, but nothing I'm sure as to what I'll be encountering in the next couple of weeks on my drive from Miami, to Nashville, then San Antonio, then Moab, then Los Angeles. What do you guys suggest other than replacing the heater unit. Here in florida the heater units go bad from no use. they rust out from just having antifreeze just sit in them, Happened on my rover, happened on My fairmont years ago, and happened on my E250 cargo van 2 times. OH, and in my 93 LWB, opening the passenger door with a key from the outside only opens that door. Best, Ozzie |

chris, There is no heat through the front vents, only through the defrost and foot vents. You actually can get a bit of heat to seep out front vents by moving the switch to recycle, but it's fairly meek. You can stop most of the cold air coming in but you have to understand that it's just a flap with a simple gasket to hold the cold air out, and most are 10-14 year old trucks. Mine tends to leak cold air through the actual heater control panel. But then again, the previous owner replaced the heater core this time last year so I get plenty of heat when she warms up. pwc |

yeah, ant to keep the cold air from leaking thru thru the main vents you just have to manually slide the little plastic cover on the vent itself over. yes, we can all argree that it's a pretty shitty system i am think about making a little snorkle top thing that can redirect the heat comming out of the top of the dash toward my hards. worset cans i'll just tape some card board on it to deflect near me. rd |

it blows the ambient air temp thru the vents. you see he's bragging about the 90+ day you cant turn on the 'air conditioner' and it will change the tempature of the air, but i think it will always seep out at speed. also you can point the vents away from you. rd |

It's an 88. The heat blows at the feet area always. The A/C doesn't get real cool because of the constant heat coming in. |
