Hi all. Me and my wife are looking to buy a Discovery 97 or so maybe 98 what should we look for? We plan on being active in the clubs here in mass. So we will be offroading. What Model is most capable of the bat. No purchases will be made for hop ups for a few years. thanks.

If you are concerned about offroad capability just make sure it is a D1 and you should be set, most around here tend to say that the later the model year the less reliable the trucks due to quality control issues. (and yes everyone I know a D2 can be very capable off road but he asked for what model would be the MOST capable STOCK). As for the different SE, LE, and whatever packages its just differences in creature comforts -sunroofs, heated seats and the like, the truck underneath it all is the same for all.

Geoffrey,

D1's are all Disco's up to 1998. The D2's came out in 99. There might be a bit of cross over in the 99 year but for sure, everything 98 and older are D1's.

thanks alot guys. I apreciate all the help. Since I wont be purchasing any equipment for it for a while there is a nicely pampered XD down the street owned by a yuppie couple for sale. 65k miles and $13,900 Would that be a good sterter rig. It seems to come standard with some good offroad items. I heard however they should be avoided. is it true. that is my last question Pormise.

They did make some DIs in 99. I don't know much about XDs but don't worry about asking more questions.

oops, I just realized Im an idiot. Not ALL DIs are the same some of the earlier ones had funky stuff like rotoflex drivelines instead of U-joints.

Carter, did you really mean to say the *later* the model year, the more quality control/reliability issues there are? I thought we all sort of agreed that after Lord Lucas got the boot things got better right off the line?

That XD sounds like a fair deal. If it has been serviced and maybe you could get a couple bucks off I would go for it. XDs are cool.

Ya, the XD's are pretty cool...and that would be more than a good "starter rig". :)

You'll have to get used to being known as "the guy with the yellow truck" around your neighbourhood.
