So my wife is in Houston for a meeting that so far is quite boring. She's in need of strength. She's in need of good Guinness.
Not some Red Robin servin' it ice cold in the wrong glass Guinness. I'm talkin' slow pour, 55dg in a perfect pint glass Guinness.

Anyone know of any?

pwc
PS, if someone here suggests the perfect place, I never have to worry about her bugging me about being on "that site AGAIN?!?!?"

OK.
I'll try my best:

Downtown (directly downtown): Either the 1. "Flying Saucer" or the 2. "Brewery Tap". These places are within walking distance if you are barhopping.

North(west) side: 3. "Mathia's PUB" on FM 1960 close to Veterans Memorial. Requires a drive but she may be staying close to this location.

All 3 establishments are perfect for the "beer coneissuer"! Pub style, hundreds of taps on the wall, not too trendy with a bunch of idiots Hanging around.

Have her try Scheiner Bock on tap. It started out not far from here and is pretty popular.

Hope this helps. I may think of some others as the day goes by.

Kai,

You mentioned the Flying Saucer. I stop there on every trip to the DFW area.

The crooked ferret out on jones road in NW houston (cypress) is pretty good with an outside deck and lots of choices.

Also, stop by the Side Car Pub out on Huffmiester and ask for Mary Beth, the owner, tell her Greg Parrish sent you by and she will hook you up.

:)

Greg,
Are you a member of HLRC?

The Crooked Ferret is part of my wife and I's stomping grounds. I thought about mentioning it.

Do you live on the North side? We live North of Willowbrook & Cutten Road.

Paul, I don't know if the Flying Saucer is a chain? I'm sure it is. It's a pretty nice place with a big selection of beer and ......lots of saucers on the walls.

Kai--not bad for being in San Antonio, eh? Where is the Flying Saucer in Houston? My wife and I recently went to the Saucer in San Antonio--very impressive!

Doug,
I just got to thinking of another cool place which is in SA.

The "Buckhorn Saloon", previously, part of the Lone Star Brewery. Very cool place to walk around and look at Exotic and Native American wildlife mounts. I am a hunter so I fit right in, but even to the non-hunter, it is still awe-enspiring.

Good beer too!

Kai,

I actually don't live in Houston. I live near Philadelphia. So how do I know those bars you ask? Well, I did live there. I spent 7+ years in Houston, and moved up here last year.

I lived most recently in Jefferson Pines apartments right across the street from Compaq and behind Target on hwy. 249, so I was only a few feet from your front door. :)

However, I worked for a family business who was located right near the Side Car Pub on Huffmiester, so being in the general vicinity of the Crooked Ferret, I spent much time there.

Other places of interest in that area that are either past or present:

Side Car Pub
Wicks Sports bar
Tonys Sports bar
Crooked Ferrett
Acadia (no longer there, but used to be across from CF)
The OZ Bar
Playmakers
The new Sams Boat
Ashbury's
Ft. Worth City Limits
The Paradise Club (now called something else) :)
BW3's or Buffalo Wild Wings - next to theater

Yeah your old Apt. was probably a 1-2 miles from our house. We built a house in a new dev. behind the new Methodist Hosp. on 249.

Small world! When was the last time you were in TX? I saw a white disco like yours pretty recently by SRO.

It is still hot here in case you were wondering!

If she's staying at by the Galleria, which is easiest to get to?

Kai, I've been back once or twice, but not lately. I didn't have my Disco till I moved up here and when I was back, I was in a rental junk car.

I forgot about SRO's. Thats a good place. I have a friend that lives in that first subdivision on the left, past SRO's before the BBQ rest. He has about a 5,000 sq foot house right on the corner. Big red brick deal.

Oh, holy cow, there are a million places near the Galleria. no need to drive all the way to north Houston, which could take an hour or more. Tell her to check out the many clubs up and down richmond and westhiemer. There is a sams boat, sams place, daquri factory, The Men's Club (.)(.), etc. For a free meal and some good times, she could go hang out at Sullivans or Papa's Steak house at the bar. Some rich guy would guy her dinner I'm sure. :)
PF Changs is a happening spot too.

Back to the original point, she wants good Guinness in a relxed pub like place, like you originally mentioned.
I send her to a meat market that only serves Bud Light...I'm a dead man... :)

Peter,

Neiman Marcus! You better check her credit cards when she gets back.

Actually she is pretty centrally located. There is about a gazillion bars along Westheimer in both directions.

I would tell her to take Westhemier or Richmond in towards town (east). Go right on Kirby (south) under Highway 59. About 1/2 mile on left is "The Gingerman". It is a little old house.

From there, head back towards 59 but take right on service road (east) and make a left on Greenbriar (next main street) back under 59. There will be some decent bars here as well. This is know as Sheperd Square.

or

Head straight into downtown and hit the bars in town (Flying Saucer, Brewery tap, Cabo's, etc.) Best to ask directions from where ever you are at.

Greg is your friend Ken Meyer.
I own a landscape company and we do a lot of mowing in that subdivision. He is one of our customers.

Peter, Sorry for the sidetrack but the "Gingerman" is the answer! Send her there.

How funny. Yes it is. He is my uncles business partner and a good friend of mine.

Small world.

Just for kicks, trim one of his hedges into the shape of a big pair of tits, and tell him the idea was courtesy of me. :)

Peter, shepard square is good also. Cabo's is kind if nice, although I'm not sure what beer they have. I would second the Gingerman at this point though, based on your qualifications. :)

Greg,
Ken is my Insurance agent as well. General liability and property coverage for my company.
We landscaped his backyard after he put his pool in. Sprinkler system, palms, etc. etc.

The hedge trimming idea........well maybe next time. He is a good customer. Last time I was over there he had a nice old camaro.

Yeah, I knew he rebuilt it, but didn't know if he still had it. A nice purple 68 convertible isn't it? It was pretty bad ass, but I think he had some major issues getting it finished over the years, as different people working on it went out of business or went broke.

I was only kidding about the hedge idea. I sent him the link to this thread, so it's a good thing you said something nice........ LOL :)

Since she gets I think $30 for dinner she can probably just expense the cab ride and drink the rest and forget the food. :)

Thank you both for the input.
BTW isn't the phrase "nice old camaro" an oxymoron? just kidding, sorta

Peter,
Funny as it goes, I sorta wondered why you are far off in some state and you are trying to setup a nice evening for your wife where she will be off drinking Beer(probably lots) without your presence!

?

Kai,
Because, if she hopefully gets a nice relaxing evening of just sipping Guinness in a pub, she will hopefully return home in a good mood. :) That's my plan anyway.
Also, it's a further validation of the true usefulness of discoweb

Well Dobie, it was me and not my wife. She was there on business.

And as it were, they had a work "function" the second night at Gillians so she wasn't able to get to good Guinness.

Thanks to those that helped locate it anyhow. I still got bonus points for trying. :)

Next trip is Palm Springs, which doesn't seem like a Pub kinda town. And I'm going on that trip so we better find some place to drink.
