Hi-
Today in my local paper is advertised a 1980 Range Rover 2-Door with a standard shift. The ad claims it was made in Africa. I thought I was quite well versed in Rover history but I guess I missed this production or possibly it's a typo? I am going to call and set up an appointment to view if times allows. The asking price is $1750.00 Can anyone shed some light on this?

Maybe the truck used to live in Africa. I don't recall Range Rovers being made anywhere other than in the UK.

I did a quick consult of James Taylor's Range Rover The Complete Story and could find no mention of vehicle assembly in Africa. He does mention a small number of CKD kits exported through the model year 1975 but that would have no bearing on the truck you're looking at. For what it's worth, my grey market '85 Vogue was described as Canadian but that was only the country through which it entered the US. More than likely the Range Rover you're looking at was originally exported to an African country from the UK only to later be imported into the US (probably before 1985 when the laws were easier to circumvent). It no doubt went through some degree of Federalization most of which has probably been removed over the years. If it is original it will be a four speed with an integral transfer case powered the venerable 3.5 using dual Strombergs. It will be painfully slow and no where near as refined as even the earliest NAS Rangies. Nonetheless, it will be a very cool ride and as long as it is in reasonable shape, a steal at the price you mentioned. Parts are tricky but not impossible to get. If you don't buy it let me know where you are, I might be interested. Oh, and please forgive me if you're not in the US. Most Americans think anyone on the web is in the US After all, didn't Al Gore invent the internet.

Paul-
I am still waiting for a call-back from the owner. I am in the U.S. and I'll get you the contact number if I bail on it. A 2-door standard shift would be very cool indeed!

My '85 is a 4 door Vogue and has a five speed (LT-77). I only wish that it had the short shifter that was introduced in late '85. These RR's never made it here because new laws enacted in '85 essentially shut the door on any attempts at Federalizing any non-compliant vehicles. By late '86 Range Rover North America (as the early incarnation of LRNA was called) was offering up the first of what was to become know as NAS spec Range Rovers with efi and ZF auto transmissions.
Pre NAS spec Range Rovers are a joy to work on. They're only marginally more complex than late model Series IIIs and early 90/110s. They're more TRUCK like and have a rugged quality that sometimes gets obscured by the later models chock full of electrical gadgets and upscale gimmicks. Gee, can you tell I really love my old gal?

Hi Rob,
Thank you for you offer, however, if I start to wharehouse parts for the Range Rover while still doing the resto on my Series, the house will really take on the appearance of an automobile junk yard! You know the old Law of Threes when it come to a resto...three times as much time, money and SPACE as you figured. It's been even worse than that! My wife is a saint!
