7. Mud Flaps
A must have for keeping your Freelander clean. Without it, well, you know - you get those nasty streaks of mud on your doors...

You have gota be kidding me.
Although, I do like my mud flaps on the d-90, if they make me look uncool I will take them off. That armrest is just what I need to hide my dildo in.

How about a brown paper bag to put over your head every-time you show up somewhere with all that stuff.

The Freelander model - show everyone at work the "little bitch" car that I bought.

The Walky talk set - so the improper antenna does not protrude from the back of your "off-road beast" when you what to act like a off-roader

Nice to see you have a brush bar to look tough but are to afraid to get muddy streaks on your car

God you guys are great. Iactually traded my Discovery in on the Freelander. Yes the Disco was better off road but the Freelander absolutely destroys the Disco on the road. I have taken my Freelander off road quite a bit and it does provide a lot of fun. No it can't go everywhere a Disco can but there are some tight trails the Freelander can go that the Disco can't. You jackasses need to be more supportive of the little lander because without it who knows how long the Disco and the Rangie would last in this country. It's snotty morons like you that drive me nuts. Oh by the way since I know that at least Carter is a spoiled college student why don't you guys grow up. Oh and Ron nice spelling on Guarantee you schmuck!

Go screw yourself, yeah I might be a college student but you don't know enough about me to be making assumptions about whether or not I am spoiled and even if I am spoiled a little I don't need to hear about it from you. I happen to like the freelander, and really look forward to seeing that 3 door model running around if it ever gets over here, but you can't honestly tell me that you can read that list without cringing a little, here's a few examples:

"Nothing says tough like a brush bar with chrome inserts"

"Lamp Guards, Perfect addition for that rugged outdoorsy look."

Then all of that is followed up with: " Mud Flaps, A must have for keeping your Freelander clean. Without it, well, you know - you get those nasty streaks of mud on your doors"

And as far as a model and walky-talkie set for the kids being accessories you can't live without I can think of quite a few that I would place above that such as: a small emergency/first aid kit, some basic tools, rubber floor mats, oh yeah and 6 inches of lift, some 35s, and lockers. (those last 3 were a total joke so don't get your panties in a wad).

Hey Carter have a brown bag I can borrow since my FL has the light guards, mud flaps, and the antenna on the back of my "off road beast".:-) Oh I forgot Nathan just called and my front brush bar and light pods are in. Guess that makes it 10 X's worse for me. Funny part is, it is set up just like my Disco (mud flaps, light guards, and CB)
Since I collect the model cars too, guess I better not put the Disco and the FL together for they might not get along.
Damned if I do and damned if I don't. At least I can say I have had both of the LR's. They both have their place and their own abilities.

Sure, I've got a bag for you give me an address and pay for shipping and it will be on the way :)

Anyway what I don't think you understand is that I'm making fun of what I think is a pretty lame "must-have" list, not the freelander. And ass for the brush-guards, light guards and mud flaps they wouldn't be that bad either were it not for the way the list was worded (all worried about looking rugged and tough but then also concerned about keeping looking all pretty and civilized). As for CBs, that is great that they are in both of your rigs, they are a lot more usefully than walkie-talkies. If you want to collect the models thats great as well but I hope you got a small tool kit before hand.

Greg- sorry if I was on edge in my last post, I have just been hearing a lot of that "spoiled" crap filter through the grape-vine around here (my physical location, not dweb) and it has been especially annoying since its been from people who have never met me and drive accords, explorers, and the like that are worth more than my truck.

Carter,
If Gregg and I (both prev-Disco owners) dont stand up for the Fls then who will? =-) I think he just needs a wheeling trip to blow off some steam. (planned for Sunday again. Hey at least we are not afraid to get them dirty or scratched)
I have to agree that some of that list was fluf, but to each his own.

Welcome to D-Web Middle School. Today we wil be debating who has a real Land Rover and who does not. The rules are as follows:
1. Make it as immature as possible
2. Name calling is a must
3. All comments must be at the expense of someone else or their vehichle.
4. Words like "spoiled" are double points
5. Marcus of Queensburry rules apply.

Sorry, I couldn't resist

Alright, I owe Carter an appology. I was wrong to make such a presumtion. I just get frustrated when the Freelander is trashed. Yes my Disco could go places the Freelander can't but the Freelander is still pretty good offroad with it's limitations and I am sorry but the Freelander is a BMW compared to the Disco on road. I am just tired of being slammed on this site because I drive a Freelander. Hell with the amount of problems I have been having recently I feel like I have my Disco again.

Thanks Greg, like I said earlier I probably wouldn't have even cared except I have been up to neck lately with people who have never met me talking shit (all seemed to start around the time my disco took its infamous "ride on the wrecker" - I will be posting an update in the tech forum soon).

Now about something I mentioned earlier, do any of you freelander guys know anything about the 3 door model's introduction to the US market??? I keep hearing it is going to happen but I have yet to see any.

Hell...I want one of every Land Rover ever made in my driveway...including the Freelander. And if I can afford it in the next year or two I might just get one of the 'little buggers' so I can keep the road miles off my Disco!

Carter-I understand about the spoiled crap...I used to get it in high school! Since my first car was a Mercedes...300D though. 1979! It only cost $3200!! And I had friends driving NEW cars! But I was the spoiled rich bitch driving a Mercedes that her daddy the doctor bought. Yeah...well, screw them all! Once I got to college (yes, private women's college too!) and met people who had MUCH more money than me...like my friend who drove a brand new Disco (my introduction to Rover love)...it subsided. Look forward to the day when you get mature friends...it will come I promise!
Of course, now that I drive a Rover I'm getting it again and no one believes that I paid less than 15K for it! So I think I'm going to live it up and be snobby!

There you go Sus!!! That's the way...

Just to echo Carter, it's more on the content/description of that list that was kinda funny... it's kind of in the "poseur side of things". You want to be a poseur, then be prepared to be subjected to such harrasment I guess.... It's all good though...

I still think Carter's the mostest bestest spoiled brat, Sus. Just ask his friends, LOL! Oooo, that was SO wrong, given his recent troubles. I'll just bet he'll be giving the fish hell for all this hassle.......poor old browns.....

Hey guys - I found this particular converation somewhat interesting as the article and site that is the focus, happens to be my site and my article. There may bit a bit of confusion as to what this site is about - it is NOT a site about 4-wheeling, off-roading, monster trucks. It's about Freelanders - which, as many here have pointed out oh-so-delicately, is not an off-road monster and was never intended to be. Freelander owners in general, take pride in their vehicles for more reasons than just off-road ability.

It was also intended to be humorous, as in a touch of irony (ie - mud flap sentence which I thought was clearly ironic and humorous). But I gather that wasn't very clear - guess I need to work on my humor writing.

The point of the website is to highlight all of the things one can do with a freelander - we have articles about installing lifts, bigger tires, off-road equipment, etc. But we also have stuff on, well, meaningless and silly things like Land Rover toys, picinic baskets and dog guards. It's intended to highlight the actual purpose of the car - great driving, good off-roading, fun for a family, etc...

But I must say - while I don't personally take any offense to the comments above - it is a bit dissapointing as I have normally have had nothing but fantastic experiences with other LR owners. Part of the reason I own an LR is for the community. One would hope that some members of this community would be a bit more supportive and not so vindictive, immature and crude.

I love this site, I visit weekly. But I stay away from the boards here b/c some folks just don't know how to act like adults when they get on a bulletin board - for whatever reason.

robert...I was actually enjoying perusing the site. As another option for Land Rover enjoyment...it's quite good. And I was thinking it would be fun to try to combine them in some way...mainly with gear. I would like to see a DiscoWeb t-shirt or even the license surround seems pretty cool...and maybe to have one for all LR owners who support the online world would be good. Something aside from LRNA's expensive corner of the market.
Maybe I'm missing something that is already availble, but it was just an idea. And I agree with you-Land Rover ownership is about community more than anything. Let's all remember that!

Thanks Sus - I appreaciate that. I enjoy doing the site, and generally get lots of good comments on it. We have a good membership list and I think some good content as well. Obviously, it is geared toward Freelanders - but the Freelander is really just an excuse to have some fun on the web, have some events and meet some great people. From that standpoint, it has worked quite well. We recently had an off-road outing of Freelanders in VA, and some of our members were at MAR - although unfortunately felt more ridiculed than embraced. It's too bad really - and it's just a bit silly I think. It's just a car - you know? :)

As for your ideas about gear sales - I think it's a great idea. Although an expensive one as well. Of course, if you're willing to invest - give me a ring! :)

CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG?! Ha Ha I was actually quite into DiscoWeb before I got the Freelander and then I got hacked to pieces for driving the uncool Land Rover. I have to say that Ho and Axel are great and I do love the site. I just think that we should all celebrate Land Rovers and all the great things about them....High fuel costs, knowing the service department on a first name basis, the need to buy oil by the drum, and being ridiculed by everyone for being a rich snob! Let's celebrate these wonderful things and unite against the the boring people out there that buy practical, practical, fuel efficient, reliable vehicles that can actually bore you to death! Fight the Power! Can I get an Amen?!

"- and it's just a bit silly I think. It's just a car - you know? "

Robert,
I agree it is all silly, but what you said above it what seperates the owners of the different models. There is a thread on the Disco tech page called something like "The guts and feel of a LR..." where owners talk about really the passion they have for their Land Rovers. To them it's more that "just a car".

But I agree there is much seperation in the LR community. The Series guys, RR Classics, Discos, new and newer RR's, Defenders and Freelanders. All aimed at different demos. Same badge different needs.

Don't take offense, I would still wave if I saw you on the road!

I still can't believe the picnic basket cost 175 pounds!

John - I understand the passion of the car - after all, I've spent untold number of hours creating an entire website about mine. :) I was referring more to the idea of negative attitudes toward others because of the car they drive. That has nothing to do with passion - that's just idiocy.

I just bought a 96' Disco and it's all stock, except it has a brush bar, running boards, and light covers. What are some of the essentials for off road driving? It seems like a lot of people get custom suspension and lifts, is this needed? What else is good to get before I take it off road? Also, should I take off my running boards?
Thanks,
Kevin

Kevin,
If you don't need them and plan to do some decent offroading then yes, remove them. I personally don't like them anyway but that is your decision. The truck you have right now is a great start. Yes there are many mods that you can do but the S1 Discovery is very capable offroad in stock form. In many cases the more you modify the vehicle for off road the less competent it is on road. This should be taken into consideration. If this is going to be a daily driver you should carefully consider all mods. Goodluck and Have fun.

learn to drive it in stock form first then start going nuts.
-OME springs and shocks
-better tires
-diff. guards
-sliders
-etc.

your truck is plenty capable as is. honestly you don't need a thing. most of us are just poseurs anyhow. it's all about the look. haha.

trim off that airdam first!

Sus, private womans college, which one? My wife went to Hollins College, well now called Hollins University. She was one of the "poor" ones there. Driving an old 88 Mazda 323 with all her friends driving new BMW's, Mercedes, etc.

We get lots of "oh you must be making way to much money" all the time at works. We spent less on our disco than most people pay for their accords and camry's.

The Freelanders are cool. SOme pretty nice options on them. Although i really dont mind how slow my disco is. Hey, I'm driving a large, heavy machine, who cares if it's slow. I had a loaner while the disco was in the shop, and like the litte guy. Took a while to get use to, but not a bad little rig.

I just wish they would bring over the TD's

I thought the site was good. The Freelander does not have the same type of followinhg that the other land rovers have. I would like to see more of the same enthusiasim for the freelander that the rest of th rovers have. They are very amazing for what they are designed to do, and the price point is very good. I want everyone that buys a freelander or a rover in general to know the land rover heritage and to be enthrawled by it.

Zak,

I get that all the time too at the office I work at too and it bugs the hell out of me. People think I'm getting paid way too much because they see me drive a Disco. I bought it used but it was in immaculate condition so when washed, looks new and also, to the average eye, they can't tell the differences between it and the new ones...unlike us dweb people who could probably look at another Disco go by and tell you the VIN#!! :) But there was a girl there that bought a new VW at around the same time I bought my truck and I know paid less than she did for her car, yet I'm the one getting needled about it. I just ignore it now.

I even get a lot of grief for my stupid little red miata I drive in most of the time. My wife and I work at the same office and carpool about 4-5 times a week. We usually take the miata, since it gets 32mpg and runs on cheap gas. We get tons of grief about having a little convertible and a Disco. I paid $7000 for the miata, and it's a 92. Granted it only had 20k miles on it, and looked like it was right off the showroom floor. Drive me nuts when people who know just about nothing about cars give us a hard time!!!!
