Been driving an '89 classic for 5 years with a good bit of off roadin' but just bought yellow '87 off ebay with bad engine and it should have an LT-230. I am planing on putting in 3.9 but how much more fun will it be off-roadin with the different x-fer box? Ideally, I'd like to put a 5 speed in behind it too! Any suggestions/recommendations?

Thanks
Alex

I have heard many arguments for some time extolling the virtues of the viscous coupled transfer case vs. the LT-230. Some say that the reintroduction of the LT-230 in the latest Discos only goesto show that transfer case's superiority. I can only speak from what limited experience I have with Range Rovers. I had a '94 LWB with the Borg Warner transfer case and ETC and am currently running a grey market "85 with an LT-77 5 speed (another source of debate with regard to the R-380) and an early LT-230. I'm putting on my flame retardent suit as I write this but I must say, without reservation, that my '85 is superior off road. I like being able to control when the center diff locks and for what it's worth, ETC is a poor excuse for a locking rear diff. An automatic transmission might be nice for a serious off road rig but I also enjoy rowing the boat in my two ton tin (er, excuse be...aluminum) can. A 5 speed certainly makes an underpowered 3.5 a lot easier to live with and in a fuel injected 3.9 would have to be a blast. If you're really thinking along the lines of a 5 speed try to get as many opinions as you can on the LT-77/R-380 debate. Maybe a search of the LRE Boards might turn up some valuable advice on that question.

well the VC in the transfer case simply wears out and needs rebuilt. bigger tires and the more you push it the sooner it will happen.

mine seems to take a second of slip before it will lock up.. sometimes that delay will be the all the difference.

VC in the snow is freaking great though, in my opinion.

.. and the LT230 is much stronger. Put into the engine bay whatever you want, it is the least part of the transmission to worry about. Never heard of cracked casings - which are more common on the B/W t-boxes (at the rear left part of it, where the "domed" circular cover sits). Alltogether more reliable, cheaper to overhaul (if necessary) than the B/W. My part supplier says bearing problems are far less common with the LT230 (maybe the front output bearing on the B/W is more stressed because the shaft which it supports is shorter by about 1.25". But only at a guess). The LT230 gets noisier with time but keeps on going (unless running without oil @190.000 miles f.e.) the B/W ceratinly is due for a major service by that time.

That (and having a DiscoI LT230 just lying around) was reason for me to discard the b/W on my RRC. Although in daily driving the B/W was real good and more comfortable.

Is there then a second lever in the cockpit to control the LT230? Or do you move the lever sideways as in the discovery along with forward and back?

The VC has locked up in my '89 to the point that it was embarassing pulling into a parking space with the wheels chirping away!! I dropped the front drive shaft in favor of silence!! I haven't avoided the mud holes either and you can hardly tell the thing is in 2wd, just have to keep the speed up.
