Ok, this is the other part of my "maxing out a winch" question. What is the best way to secure a RR if you are winching out another Rover/vehicle and the ground will not support the force like on ice?? Does one have to be concerned of elongating the frame if using a single rear point like the hitch? Does the hitch limit the amount of force that can be resisted from the winch? (this would seem to be yes, yet??) What is the optimum rigging method for this set-up??

Using the rear hitch reciever (shackle/hook/Dixon Bates/etc) seems to be a safe bet. The hitch is welded to the chasis and centraly located between the frames rails. At least the load is distributed evenly when you're attached to the hitch receiver. I don't know about the stretching part though...that'd be one heck of a pull! Hopefully your bumper/winch will come off before stretching your RR! I've often wondered about the front however. Since some of us double the winch line back to one of the shackles instead of creating a bridle to distribute the load evenly, this can possibly affect chasis symmetry I suppose.

it's a good idea to dig a ditch or place the tires along a natural ridge in the ground so that you dont drag the truck along the ground or depend totally on that rear anchor. also you might want to consider a pull pal incase there arent any anchors

a completely different approach might be to attack the problem from the reverse of how you did it last time. instead of pulling up to the stuck car with the nose of your RR and securing the ass. you might want to try backing down to the stuck car, attatching a tow tope and giving a slow pull while they are helpin on the gas. if nothing, then hook your winch up infront of you. and have it pull you and the car, while you give it gas and help it along. this would potentially give less strain on the winch if you are able to give the appropriate amount of gas and winch.. but this might fall into some advanced technique.

hell for that matter.. i dont know if you thought to have the guy giving it gas when you winched him out the first time? i like to always have the stuckee helping with some gas pedal if they are able.

Thanks guys for the information. Yes, have been looking at the pullpal as not many trees out here in OK.. This recent situation was probably the worse possible as it was really solid ice. No traction at all so had to secure the RR. This frame thing kinda freaked me so want to be more conservative than in the past.
