Hi, I've recently purchased an 87 RR V8 EFI 4 speed auto and have used it mildly off-road a couple of times.
It seems to working be OK, well, I didn't get stuck anyway.
What is bothering me is that when I move the lever to the diff-lock side I dont get a warning light come on. There is a four wheel drive lamp in the instrument panel (bottom right) between the rpm and speedo gauges. Should it come on?
How can I physically check the diff lock operation?
I want to take it more extreme off roading next time...

Ade, the diff lock switch on my 88 RR is to the right of the radio.

If yours is in your dash then make sure first of all that the light works. Does it turn on when you turn the ignition like the other lights do?

There are a few ways of checking while off-road but I'm gonna let someone else explain that..

Good luck,

John

John, thanks for your reply.
To the right side of my radio is another four wheel drive lamp, but there is nothing leading to it. I have removed the radio panel and the heater controls but cannot find anything that looks like it should go to it.
No, the lamp in the dash doesnt come on when I switch ign on.
Ahh.. wait.. I have an H-shape gate for the transfer box lever.
Left side for diff-lock, right side for normal.
I take it I have a manual diff lock arrangement, and some dodgy interior trim, or, the original electric diff lock has been removed and manual substituted.

Hopefuly I can check diff lock with the car on axle-stands and all wheels clear of the ground.
Just not sure how to go about it.
Cheers
Ade

Ade,
The 88's and below all had manualy locking center differentials, so yours is fitted with the correct transfer box. While off road, lock it up, and see if your steering feels a little tighter. Don't run it like that on road, or it will mess up the transfer box. Look and see if there are any wires going to the light beside the radio, they should be there.
