I know there are a lot of us on here from NoVA, and many of us have never met. I propose a PRE-St.Patty's day celebration at the Vienna Inn, this Thursday after work. Robbie Donaldson and Eric N (Grnrvr) are already coming. Who else?
Meet around 5-5:30PM

FYI:
Most Domestic Draughts $1.58
Imports and Mic Light $2.70
Huge variety of bad for your heart appetizers and meals. Live a little.

Map of downtown Vienna. Red dot is the Inn. By the way, it's a tiny white building on the right, if you're heading South on Maple.
120 Maple Avenue East, Vienna VA 22180

The Vienna Inn....now that brings back some good memories. Have not thought about their famous Chili-mac since moving to the Left Coast(San Francisco) six years ago.

That would be a shame if the Vienna Inn lost it's ambience ... grouchy owner...rude waitresses... ;^) That gathering spot was an Institution! Guess the original owners son decided to take the money and run.

Cheers,

Hey, I will be up there next week also, start working in the Tysons Corner/Vienna area for the next 5-6 months. I would really like to get together with any local d-webers sometime.

Why don't we all get together again in a month?

There's no reason why we can't do it again in a month for Jeff. Sucky for me, I'll have to bail at 6:15 - But I'll do my best between 5 and 6. Eric will make up the difference when I leave.

Hey, I just thought of something.

Any of you guys from that area know of anyone renting a small house or condo in that area?

My wife and I may need a place to stay with our dogs, two labs.

We will be up there through July for sure, possibly longer.

Email me if you know of anything. Thanks

Nope, I don't... I do know that whatever you get is going to be over priced though.. Housing around here is crazy..

Jeff, i'm in the process of buying a place. Depending on how cool you are, I might rent it short term for you. I was hoping to get a couple roommates to help cover the mortgage.

heh-heh-heh, I'm in a house with 4 other guys, one dog. One roommate is moving out to get married in April, and we will be looking to fill his spot till Oct. If you are reeeeeeallllyyy desparate, rent is only $450/mo for mediumish size room:) Seriously though, short term rent is going to be hard to find, and probably pretty expensive, specially with a couple of dogs. Believe me, I have only one dog and it took awhile to find a place, so all the best.

The cheapest and most pet friendly rental housing is in metro DC Maryland inside the beltway in Montgomery County and Prince Georges County, like Silver Spring and Takoma Park. Also, try College Park and Berwyn.

Good luck...I have two dogs and it was a b***h trying to find a decent place to live. We lucked out with a 3 bedroom house with a huge fenced yard and a laidback landlord.

Just so you know, the places I looked at last night were CRAP. So, the hunt continues. Sorry Jeff. Though, Robbie's offer sounds good.

Joanna, Are you coming tonight?

Patrick,

I wish I could, but I have to pack for an early trip to Virginia Beach tomorrow morning. It would be nice to meet everyone that I am learning about my truck from on DiscoWeb. Hopefully I will be able to go the next one. Keep me posted!

Ah, VABeach! I went to school down there. Being a tourist or visiting family?

Visiting family and dealing with wedding planning because I am getting married down there. I am really from Norfolk, but some people have no clue what Norfolk is...it's only the biggest naval shipyard!

Did you go to school at ODU?

Yup, all the plans are done.. I just need to go and get a tux which I'm doing this weekend. We are going to Alaska for 2 weeks.. Going to go flight seeing, on a day glaciar (sp) cruise, bear watching, fishing, and some other sight seeing. I'm hoping that I get to see the northern lights even though it isn't exactly a good time of year for them. I can't wait.. We are also going to try and get a guide to go look for some wolves.

Oh, how cute. Are you renting the stretch Range Rovers for the limos? Instead of soda and beer cans, you can drag oil filters. I'm FAR from that stage in my life.

Jo, I went to Wesleyan, lived in Kempsville. Are you familiar?

July 6th by the beach should be sweet..

Joanna (Joanna)
Posted on Thursday, March 14, 2002 - 10:48 am:   Edit Post Delete Post Print Post

Unfortunately, not by the beach, but in a big garden. For the honeymoon, it was between Greece and a sailboat island hopping in the caribbean. Hard choice. We chose the sailboat.

Patrick, I am familiar with Wesleyan, right next to Norfolk Academy private school. I have family in Kempsville and I lived in Ghent by downtown Norfolk. Are you familiar with Ghent and Colley Avenue, etc.?

AM I FAMILIAR? I think you underestimate me. Ghent has really turnned around lately. There's a whole new development by Nauticus. The Pagota that was visible from the World Trade building is now blocked by several new townhouses. I frequented O'Mally's around the corner. It's the only place to get live Irish music in the area.

If you need a captain, I used to teach sailing at the Norfolk Yacht club, by ODU, for three years. Good choice on the sailing.

Ghent is awesome now. Everyone is leaving chics beach to live in downtown norfolk. The pagoda now has a little cafe in it, right? There's a new mall and I know where O'Malley's is, my brother used to love that place before he moved to Arizona. I used to eat at Open Wide alot.

I can't believe you used to teach sailing at the Yacht Club. What a small world!

One of my ex-boyfriends was a member, not me. And alot of my friends used to swim for the Yacht Club on their summer league team. I swam for Ghent. I was never really into sailing, I always wanted to but never had time because I was a big time swimmer and I was also a rower.

Cool, cool.
Too bad you're not coming tonight. Maybe we can organize something for the DC Metro Disco people when you get back from sailing. Maybe a big barbecue in the late spring early summer.

Joanna,

Great choice on the sailing! Bare boating or crewed charter? Which islands, if you don't mind my asking? We love the Caribbean, but don't make it nearly often enough.........have a wonderful honeymoon!!!

Eric, Alaska in summer sounds wonderful, too. Everyone I know who goes there can't say enough good about their trip. Hope it's as good for you, too!

Karen :)

Ya, Karen it should be really nice.. We have a free house on a lake to stay at the whole time we are there.. One of Kristen's friends are letting us use one of their summer homes while we are up there.

Patrick, a cook out would be cool.. I would offer up my house but, I live in a shack with an even smaller back yard.. I am up for that though, and would be more then happy to poney up the cash for a pig if someone wants to spit it and roast it.. um, fresh open flame roasted pork.. :)

Patrick, I like the idea of the big BBQ. That would be great. Let's do it late spring early summer.

Karen, it's a crewed charter and I'll have to ask my fiance the details, I made him make all the decisions on it.

Eric, do you know where you can get a whole pig?

Anyone have any ideas about parks or facilities that can support a bunch of SUV's and a pig roast?

Riverbend is right next to Great Falls and is free to enter. It has a cookout area and public restrooms. And it's on the river. Close to DC and MD and has plenty of parking.

I have some friends that have done a few.. I can find out where they got them and get one.. Only thing is that public parks ussually mean "no beer" (just a thought) I think some around here will let you though.. However, I don't think that the little grill they got is going to cook a pig. I know it won't if it is like all the other parks that I have been too.. Someones house or land would be better for something like this..

Not real sure but what about ASSOTEAGUE ISLAND over by OCEAN CITY MD. Its alot of beach, should be able to do a whole pig there I assume. We can also pay for a permit and go wheeling there. You can bring a tent and even stay the night. Maybe some one can call or find out if we can do a PIG ROAST there. Just an idea!!! I`d love to met some of you Rover freaks!!

Who wants to "donate" his or her house or land for a DiscoWeb BBQ? Anyone?...Anyone?... The beach sounds nice, but are metro DC area Disco Owners willing to drive that far? I am...

Have any of you actually "done" a whole-pig roast? We used to have a yearly pig roast event at Massies Mill near the Tye river in central VA. You probably want a piglet. A full grown pig can weigh several hundred pounds. A piglet for roasting can be arranged for through most grocery stores' butcher/meat dept. You will want to have them kill, and clean it of internal organs. You will need to keep it well refrigerated prior to cooking... especially if you are transporting it very far. Remember that pork is one of the most dangerous meats if undercooked. To have less than 100 pound piglet ready for 75+ people we had to prepare the night before and start cooking at 5-6 AM to feed them in the late afternoon. You will also need a rack to hold the carcass together for turning over the fire and carrying it to and from. We did not bury the pig but roasted it over a pit fire out of the wind. If done properly it can be a fun event... but if you are novices you can either be eating raw pork or have too much or not enough meat. It will take some or all of the group to tend to keeping hot coals under the pig, turn it so it cooks evenly, measure the internal temperature, and drink lots of beer. It might be better if you have someone precook it and then reheat it over a pit fire. Then again.... you all may be experienced in such things and way beyond my advice/experience. Good Luck and remember that it takes a lot of beer to marinate a 100 pound piglet.

Ya, I have some friends that do it once or twice a year.. It is a pain in the butt that is for sure.. I just said that I would buy it.. I don't want to be the one to cook it. I'll help but, I don't want to be in charge of it that is for sure as I have never done one myself.. Maybe just better off doing a pot luck Iron Chef type thing.. Maybe Iron Chef east coast and skip the pig?

We might be in, Eric, it's just hard for us to commit due to the many variables in our weird life. One colicky horse can ruin the best laid plans. As time draws closer keep me posted, O.k.?
