I have encountered a problem with my '95 Range Rover 4.0 SE. The "Service Engine" light cam on a little after I crossed the 100K mile mark and it has been acting a little sluggish. My first thought is a O2 Sensor whihc is no big except I have 4 of them. I want to be able to diagnose problems myself so I just bought a Actron OBDII diagnostic tool. The thing works great excpet the only thing it tells me is that everything is fine. It even tells me that my "Service Engine" Light is not on and staring me in the face. I am wondering if you guys can think of anything or maybe I just got the wrong diagnostic tool. I got the model CP9135 which seem like it should work fine, does anyone have any experience with this model. I will be calling Actron tomorrow to ask them about it because they are closed on the weekends. Any help will be appreciated.

Hmmm............

On a Disco, a '95 is a OBD-I; OBD-II was required for '96-on vehicles. I don't know if the '95 RR was an OBD-II or not, if they switched to it a year early or something.... But, if you plugged it in, I suppose it is an OBD-II.....

Don't know about the '95 Rangie, but on a '96-'99 OBD-II Series I Disco, the amber "Check Engine" light comes on if there's a code, whereas the red "Service Engine" light comes on at 52k to remind you do do a service to check to see that all of the emmissions is functioning.

If so, there's a box, probably behind the side panel of the passenger footwell, that is small, square, black, with a LR-logo sticker on it. Straighten out a paper-clip, and push it through the hole behind the sticker, and if the pins inside are lined up the way they're supposed to be, the light should cut out.

AFAIK, all model years of the P38A are OBD-II compliant. The only way to reset the MIL with an OBD-II scanner or testbook - there is no shortcut. I don't know the specifics of your OBD-II tool to tell you how to reset the light - you will have to clear the fault code which is causing it rather than looking for a function to switch it off.

it ain't MIL, it's a Service Engine light, comes on every 52kmi. Find where the SEL relay is located (e.g., on a Disco-1, it's behind the passenger kick panel), and reset using a paper clip or open the relay and short the contacts.

it has nothing to do with engine function, just something to force you to stop by the dealership.
