I just thought that I would post a little message to get things a little riled up. Is east coast wheeling tougher than west coast, or visa versa? I know this post will bring a few people out of their holes.

I haven't been wheeling on the left coast so I wouldn't know.. I think that we have better clay type mud though.. :)

Tellico , North Carolina - East Coast Baby - the best 4x4ing by far and the trails are maintained by the gov't - this is actually a good thing... And you get to see every kind of truck you could imagine. Trails go from dirt road to damn near impossible without 42's and a winch and lots of luck and axles..mud, creeks, Smoky Mtns. elevation and a flyfishing river runs right through it..

That is like comparing apples and oranges. The east coast has more trees, mud and loose rock. The (South) west is more desert and rock crawling. Asking which is tougher is like asking us to compare water skiing to downhill skiing. Depending on how you are set up, one will be harder than the other. A rock buggy would probably not do too well in deep mud, just like it would be pretty difficult to water ski behind a row boat.

The West is the best. It's not even close. The Hammers. Rubicon. Dusy Ershim. Farmington. Las Cruces. Truckhaven. The list goes on and on.

i dissagree.. east is better. far more little day trip avalible. there are trails everywhere and none of them have names.. you just turn off some country road and you are wheelin' no crowds or any of that jazz, at least in PA thats how it is.

check out your population density maps - more desolate in the southwest - can't just jump out of the woods at any time for a fill-up and a microwave burrito at the stop-n-go

rocks are everywhere, but more exposure of dry bedrock out west

more mud in east

The West is the Best...get here, and we'll do the rest...

Rob,

It's the same here.

The West is definitely better. And don't think this is prejudice speaking. I'm somewhat of an East Coaster too. "You East Coast? I fah East Coast".

sure john, you spin a good yarn... but we all know this is the real stuff out here. our trucks get dirty,,, unlike you all getting your underbelly sand blasted shiny from a drive in the desert.

okay blue, lot less people lot more land, but much of it isnt even got dirt on it... i mean who want to wheel on sand and rock when you can have mud and trees

;-)

Well ... have to admit, I have thought of this: ... my little non permanent antenna set up I've got going right now (pic in gallery, I'm too retarded, and have been unable to post a darn pic on a thread here yet) would probably get yanked out by the cord with a tree branch or something. ... Not that we don't have trees here :)

mine (antenna) has been gone for about a year now. LR had their head up their ass on that one. well until '97.
only 4wheeling i did out west was in a samuri outside palm springs. brought it back to the rental company after it stopped starting 50% of the time.
i like having my 4 seasons while i am out in the 'woods'.

Forget E/W coast, personally I would love to go wheeling through some of the south american jungles - you know where it rains 5 inches every day, and every day is like a CT ride without the dialog:) Perhaps one day in a few years I'll take out 6 months and do something.....

Blue (Bluegill)

Most of my wheeling has been in the east. Twenty years of wheeling in NY vs. only 6 years out here. I miss the trees and grass and water and dirt. But the relatively quiet rocks and gravel and sand and cactus are nice too.

Hell, it's all good.

Yes , its all good. Both areas provide different challenges. The west has more traction but more pit falls.....

Instead of comparing which is best, why not compare the number of trails on the West coast compared to the East coast.

Let me see...New England Area....one, two, three, three, three, four...oh no, that one is closed... three,

You get my drift.

hey we have mt. lions in my neck of the woods now. they are coming back. very slowly, but they are. nittany mountain is just down the road from my folks place and we have seen one in front of their house. (just one years ago) 15 yards in front of us. and no we were not all wasted!! game commission ain't saying anything.......once that is out every good ol boy redneck will be out there wanting to mount it in his living room.

Garrett,

They're still in the Appalachians.... I've gone round and round w/ some people who say otherwise, but I personally know too many people who have seen 'em... it's not just "zoo escapees" as some claim. Mt. Rogers, Clinch Mountain, Blue Ridge, Allegheny.... they're here...

yeah i know. (well kinda) my dad was not really sure who to tell when he saw it. and it is not like my dad would not know what they look like. it was not even scared.......just walked slowly past him in front of the house. but know that my parents don't live in a development. very rural and farms all around them. big damn cat though. first the game commission boys asked if it could have been a domestic cat (?) and then a bob cat. oh sure.......they are so damn similar. drrrrrr. but there is a group withing the PA DCNR (natural resource folks) that are keeping an eye on these 'sitings' and theh # is going up. again they certainly don't want alot of locals finding out about this, as to keep them from 'seeking' them out.
but to see one in the wild is pretty impressive. mountain lions are big damn cats. the only ones that i will not mess with. so heed the advise below in regards to mt. lions, but proceed in regards to domestic ones. :)

Hey!

I just remembered a joke about kids eating birthday cake, where the mom had forgot to buy any of those colored decorative toppings, so she used BBs....

That night, first kid comes in and wakes her up "Mom, I just peed a BB!" Mom says "Don't worry about it" and sends the kid back to bed.

Later, the second kid comes in and wakes her up "Mom, I just peed a BB!" Mom says "Don't worry about it" and sends that kid back to bed, too.

Then the third kid comes in to wake up Mom...

Ticks? It isn't the West Coast people who are into ticking the hell out of a truck when a tire lifts an inch off the ground. Rather, the West Coast people just go with the flow and are cool as ice. Here are some illustrations.

Here's Ho on Yellow Hill, which is in Pritchett Canyon: http://www.discoweb.org/moab2001/pritchett/DSC00181.JPG

Yellow Hill isn't that difficult of an obstacle, but there's a big drop-off to the left that makes the obstacle a little dicey. As you can see, Ho is cool and the gang. No ticks. No nothing.

Here's me on Yellow Hill:
http://www.discoweb.org/moab2001/pritchettho/DCP_0488.jpg

Again, no ticks. Just going with the flow.

Now, contrast those two West Coast pics with the following pic of an East Coast boy on the same obstacle. This pic typifies East Coast wheeling:
http://www.discoweb.org/moab2001/pritchettho/DCP_0481.jpg

Not four, but FIVE ticks on there. Now if want to talk about driving Rovers between sticks on an obstacle course or balancing the truck on a giant teeter totter, then admittedly the West Coast boys probably wouldn't do as well as the East Coast boys. After all, the trails out West are good enough that we don't require such activities to keep us interested. But if you're talking about real driving on real trails....

Um , John , shall I go digging ? I remember ticks on Hos truck on Suicide hill to get him up and I also remember none on mine and I went up clean. The un named obstacle in pritchett also had Ho tick laiden and as I recall , yep , I was tick free.... Both of these events are on the Moab Vid... :)

Rob,

Well, compare these two pics:

http://www.discoweb.org/moab2001/pritchettho/DCP_0481.jpg
http://www.discoweb.org/moab2001/pritchettho/DCP_0488.jpg

The same players are in both pics. In the first pic of the ticking action with Kyle, George, Sean, Kristian, Abe, and Brian are ticking for Kyle and giving it all they got.

Contrast that with the second pic. When a West Coast boy is on the same obstacle, those same players (with the exception of Brian who is spotting me) are on top smoking cigs and drinking cold ones. So the "stand around and watch" mentality of the West Coast boys comes from not having to tick at all. As in, "You mean a West Coaster is coming up next? Sheeeit Negro, that's all you had to say. I'll see you at the top."

Well, it says:

"62 of the world's finest driver / spotter teams assembled on the Ute Indian Reservation just outside of Vernal for part 4 of the Goodyear Extreme Rock Crawling Championship Series."

Unless things are different on the East Coast, there is no ticking allowed during rockcrawling competitions. They may, however, allow ticking during the teeter totter and driving-through-the-sticks portions of the competition.

LOL. What a thread!

Is that also a West Coast spotter?

It looks like there are three options to get to the top: West Coast driver and spotter, East Coast tick method, or plain old winch.

I've been to where Deliverance was filmed, at Woodall Shoals on the Chattooga....

Didn't stay long, was there just during day-light, wasn't far from the vehicle, and was armed....

Didn't want to make a sequel....

River's Edge (mid-1980's) is great. Keanueaaau Reeves & a few other punks play shiftless kids that do something bad. Hopper plays a crazy backwoods-type dude that sells them all pot. Hopper has a girlfriend that I think you'all easters would just love....LOL

Okay, back to topic ... (above) referring to spotters: "The best are in the West."

Yes, and much patience too ... like when I just stop and freeze (blocking trail, and possibly inciting "offroad rage") ... John Lee has figured out the secret for spotting me (i.e. coaxing me) through anything ...

Naw....

Kalishnikovs are really good about staying pointed in the general direction of their target on full-auto. They're not "target-rifles", but darn fine as a battle rifle. A '16 variant, sure, they'll climb on anyone on full-auto, that's partly why they changed them to 3-shot bursts.

Ya, but if you look at her stance that gun would be out of control real quick.. Not that I'm an expert or anything..

Any way back to the west vs. east coast.. I'm thinking that a Bi-athalon would be cool.. Drive an obsticle, shoot a group of targets.. Just use trucks in stead of skis. West coast boyz vs. east coast.. :)

drinking would have to be involved somehow of course.

not suggesting trucks/guns/beer at the same time. separate events and days.

all that light beer you southwest/western boys & girls drink won't be admissible.

Um, the beer of choice would have to be Guiness.. The rule could be you have to drink 3 Guinesses then set the cans up at 25 yards and shoot (must be a hole in the can) them with hand guns (50 yards if you want to use rifles ).. Then continue on to the next check point where you repeat.. Driver doesn't drink shooter does.

Man, I notice all of these challenges are coming from the East Coast boys. We West Coasters don't need no stinkin' challenges. We West Coasters already do the stuff you guys are talking about. In addition to our better trails, we have the following:

Shooting? We got your shooting:

you just won't catch me drinking light beers. even on a hot day! :)

i can certainly hold my own though. believe me on that one.

what the hell is tecateee anyways, must be some hard core lite mixican beer. and the squirt is that the mixer for some of them there flowery drinks you west coast boys drink. and what about those pea shooters you boys (and girls) are playing with (altho the collection of the said pea shooters was very impressive). there not a decent baer killer in the group. those vittles are sure nice lookin tho. i see a bi-athalon/cook off/beer drinking contest.

Man, so far all I've seen from the East Coasters is talk. Talk about how the West Coasters are gay. Talk about our beer cans being full. But at least we have pics of our beer cans. Talk about poor shooting technique. At least we have pics of us shooting. Talk about our lousy west coast trails. At least we have pics of our trucks on the trails and not in some parking lot at a Rover rally. What we have is not the ultimate but at least we're showing something other than talk. The only pic I've seen thus far is some generic pic pulled from some website or something with some rednecks on it. Oh, there has been more than talk. There have been a few rover polo challenges thrown out, but these are also just another variety of talk. So all talk and no action from the East Coast boys so far.

Is nobody back East the real deal? I know Kyle is the real deal because I've wheeled with him before and seen him in action. Still, when I see this I must pause and wonder:

hehe like I said before - it's all good. I just like the relative isolation out here. I live in the 6th largest city in the USA, and one of (if not THE) fastest growing cities. Yet I can drive less than 25 miles from my front door in middle class suberbia and wheel in places like this:
4p

now as far as the east vs west quasi-debate goes, I'd post a pic of my dick laying on the table if I could only get the pic down below 50kb :)

"LOL, chalies and cameras. Too true."

Holy crap!

On a western geology trip, Walt and I were up in Banff... we hiked up the Athabasca glacier, to where it came out of the Columbia ice field. We didn't even have crampons, but at least we had sturdy boots, daypacks, technical shells, and rock hammers.... (ice axes would have been cooler).

The chateau there has these 8-wheeled all-wheel drive buses... they drive up along side the glacier, then turn out onto it and park, about halfway up.

So, as we're approaching the "parking area" on the glacier, we notice that EVERYONE was a "chalie with a camera".... As we walk by, they're ALL taking pictures of us....

Then, on our way back down, there's a different group parked in the same spot, and it all happens again.... What was funny is, half of them would act like they're taking a picture of their friend, then quickly turn and snap a pic of us, then quickly turn back again hoping that we didn't see them. Some had video cameras... it was a real hoot, thinking what their home video would be like!

lol....

It was scenic, actually....

It was foggy out on the glacier, they couldn't see that far... it was only when we were up at the head that we really could see any distance...

They really do look better from afar instead of up on 'em, but they're still cool (Ha! sorry, bad pun...)

OK, so these aren't hard core pics but they're decent trails and not bad for a couple minute search (on only one website).

I've never been off-road out west but I'm sure it's awesome. The pics from OTR have me wanting to hit CO badly. There are similar trials out here but most are different, but that's good. It would suck if all there was was Moab or mud or whatever. It's about variety. And if you've got the right attitude and are hanging with some decent guys, you'll have fun no matter what trail you're on. As for beer, well I'm sure you can get East Coast beer shipped west ;-)

"well just so ya'll know RoverFest has been canceled for this year. i know......i know....you boys out west are a little busted up about it."

Actually, that really sucks. I make fun of events like Roverfest because of the parking lot rallies, the driving through sticks, and the teeter totters, but there is more to wheeling than climbing rocks or putting your vehicle at risk. There are certainly many different forms of wheeling. Besides, I don't think anybody really goes to these types of events for the wheeling anyway. These types of events can't have difficult trails for the liability to the organizers and the large number of people attending would make any difficult wheeling impossible. I think people attend these types of events more to see and be seen as well as meet other Rover fanatics, and that can certainly be very enjoyable in its own right. That's really too bad about Roverfest.

"those were pretty funny pics though john. loved the *pointing at the dirty wheel* pic."

Actually, I didn't think that was the funny part of that pic. I was cracking up more at Perrone's GQ pose.

they cancelled it due to the few people that were organizing it and it was getting to be too much for the local rover club. they will now be focusing on more smaller events that take less time to organize. i went last year and had a good time......usually make a nice long weekend trip out of it. bring the mt. bikes along and there you have it.

I gotta say Simon, South America would rock!! Now I just fly occasionally down to tourist spots. Too bad I'm just an ill equiped gringa for a trip down there ... Leslie,

Now ya talkin! I'm only a small part Scotch-Irish but this weekend I'm 100% Green! That's the beauty of St.Pats Day, everyone gets involved! At least here in New York, well usually. The mood this year is a little more somber. The men of NYFD who lost there lives, many of which were Irish, did so Unselfishly in the hope of saving lives. They will be remembered this St. Pats Day and everyday by many, and my first pint of Guinness will be in honor of these brave men!

Not sure which day I'll party the hardest though. The parade's tomorrow but Sunday's Officially St.Pats Day. The meal's the same every year though, Shepherd's pie and Guinness beers, with shots of Jameson's in between. I love this holiday!!! And if you've never tried Guinness this is the perfect time to give it a try, on tap. Purists say if it's not outta the tap, then it aint Guinness. Don't be afraid of the dark! Happy St. Patricks Day to all, and don't forget to wear Green and say a prayer for the FDNY.

Heh heh.....

THE MEXICAN SCOTSMAN (C. Downie)
(The Ballad Of José McGregor)

José, get your bagpipes
And head down to the square
Serenade the passers-by
And you'll make some money there

José came to this country
Looking for a chance
To make some decent money
To buy a pair of pants

But we were in recession
And jobs were far and few
So José took his bagpipes
And did what he had to do

Dressed in his sombrero and kilt
With his bagpipes and maracas
Playing away for his supper
Boiled haggis with nachos

One day while he has busking
A pretty young lassie came by
She says, "José, take a stroll with me,"
Says José, "Si, si! Och aye!"

They spent the day together
Then she took him to a dance
Where José moved most gracefully
'Cause he wasn't wearing pants

And he was born in Mexico City
Educated in Scotland
In sandals and bright tartan poncho
José's fashion statement was not planned

But when José went to the men's room
There was trouble close at hand
For in came Bob, the sailor man
The roughest man in the land

Says Bob, "You're looking pretty
In your little tartan dress
Now you'd best be off to the ladies' room
'Fore I pummels ya into a mess!"

Now you could have heard a pin drop
As José turned around
His Scottish-Mexican blood began to boil
And it made this kind of sound

And when it all was over
Sailor Bob lay on the floor
He looked the saddest, sorry wreck
Ever blown ashore

Now the sailors keep a lookout
Whenever they're on the land
For they knows well that ya doesn't mess
With a Scottish-Mexican Man!

Wow, Simon, they are asking $42,000.00 for a 1997 Disco, and $38K for a 2000 Freelander! Pricey vehicles outside the States, aren't they? My UK pals tell me they pay much more in the UK because of the VAT, etc. Had a Brit buddy over Thursday night, and he was checking out our Disco and liking it. He was the same one who couldn't believe I'd buy anything except his favorite American car, a BUICK! He was only here on business, and proudly pointed out the rental Buick he had, saying, "Look what The Queen rented for me!" LOL!

East coast and West coast are both crap. For real off-roading you need to come to the North coast. Great Lakes country. I've seen your pictures and east or west has nothing on us.

You want sand? We got that.

100% Funny you should say that - I spent this past weekend drinking Guiness & Killians & diggin rocks out of my front yard (no matter how much I watered them, they wouldn't grow).

Simon, that's some funny shit...

KJ,

Damn, I am so sorry about your dog ... We also have two geriatric pets that are part of the family, and I know how we feel about them. Wish they could live forever, but sometimes seeing them deteriorate is the toughest part. After I inquired, I suddenly thought about that, and I couldn't remember if your "Jack Daniel's" were old or not ... I had a funny feeling after I posted ... Shoulda thought more before hitting the post button. Anyway, I'm truly sorry to hear about your loss. You're right, these things are tough. :(

Warm wishes to you and your family,

Kim

Hey Kim,

Thanks for the kind words, but no worries about anything you posted. You're right, it's tough seeing them go down hill, but we just do the best we can. As with everything good in life, we have to be happy with what we have for as long as it lasts. Awwwwwwww, now everyone go out and hug your Rover!

Karen :)
