This past turkey weekend I got started on a new project. With the plan of rolling down a nice coat of herculiner I removed all the carpet and seats in preparation. Mission was accomplished and everything was out except the drivers seat. Well, Sunday was upon me and I had not taken the rover out for a spin on the turkey holiday so I had to at least take'er out for a few hours.

Well, I ended up getting it high-centered in a big heap of sludge down a dozer "cut-out". So when it occurred to me that I did not have my big box of recovery gear I didn't mind to much because I still had the Warn out front starting to get an appetite. For some REALLY stupid reason, I had moved the remote from the glove compartment to my recovery box. Well, there was nothing to do but collect my GPS, cell phone and keys and start hiking out.

I ended up hiking 6 miles before I got a ride, and since I never had intended on going in anything rough, I was wearing shorts and flip-flops with temp in the high 30's.

BUT, it was a pretty day for the hike and the peace and quite on the way back was nice.

Once I got back with my remote, it took all but ten minutes to get out.

Thought I'd share,

BW

LOL...that could hurt. Might want to add a pair of old hiking boots to your "list of things to carry all the time". I carry those along with spare gloves and winter hat...as well as my fishing vest. :)

30 degrees, 6 miles in shorts and flip flops? You're a better man than I. I would have used that cell phone to call someone. :)

Macgyver would have opened up that solenoid pack, crossed a few wired and pulled himself out in 4 minutes flat. Of course Macgyver also wouldn't accidentaly cross the wrong wires and fry the thing. :)

Would McGuyver have wrapped a bare cable around a rock or tree?

No, he would have made a tree strap out of the cell phone :)

Funny how it always happens that way. When my LR died on the way back from a quick trip to the car wash, and I didn't even have shoes with me!

[Who would needs shoes, I was just going to wash the LR and drive back home...]

Hell yeah Macgyvers the man, I bet he could orbit the earth three times and return safely using nothing but some paper clips and a can of coke.

Speaking of Macgyver I finally got on of the new Leatherman tools (the "Wave" model to be specific) and I can highly recommend it. Much better than the older ones, large blades are accessible w/ out opening the pliers, and all the components are top notch INCREDIBLE blades even if they weren't packaged in with a bunch of other things. I am getting quite good at "Macgyvering" things over here, even fixed a fluorescent light fixture a second ago. I wear it on my belt all the time now, just another part of my inner-redneck-self coming out.

I have not been impressed with the quality of Leatherman tools. I have the Supertool, and the Micra.
Both have broken with what I would call limited use. Still, I haven't found anything better, so I guess I will schlep myself down to the store and get another one.

Craftsman needs to make one. Not the best tools in the world, but you can't beat the lifetime warranty!

Sounds like a nice little adventure...to look back on, of course...not while it was actually happening...

That is a funny story BW.

I took my wife out to show her how good my new front arb locker is and how the mony I spent on it was so justified. Long story short, I got the truck hi centered real bad. Took 1 1/2 to get it out because there was nothing to hook the winch to.

I really made a mistake by telling her that if we would have invested (for safety reasons of course)in a pull pall that we wouldn't be in this mess. Being the very practicale lady that she is she informed me that if I had not driven up the hill in the first place we wouldn't need the lockers or the pull pall. We would have saved the 1 1/2 hours and about $1500.00 for the lockers and we wouldn't need the winch, pull pall, replacement parts or any othe the other stuff that I have bought for the truck.

Note to self: Sometimes it is better to not add fule to the fire.

Greg,

Did you send the leatherman in for repair? I bent the needle nose pliers on mine trying to unscrew the caps in 55 gallon drums .... sent it into leatherman and they sent me a new with a very nice letter. That was about 10 years ago, though. Don't know if they still have the replacement policy.

I haven't yet. I am thinking about it.
I should tell them that I DID buy each of my groomsmen one for being in my wedding. That should win them over.
