OK, let's keep this one decent. I've been asked to repost my original picture of the test fitting of my 36" Michelin XL's on my DII. Yes, cutting will be required, but I'm OK with that. These will be my "weekend" tires, and I'll keep my 285 AT's for daily use. New gears and HD axles are also on the agenda.

Per Cliff Ashley...
"How 'bout throwing that pic back up Greg, in a new thread? "

But yeah, I was showing off.

Well, not really showing off. I'm just VERY excited!

Hey Greg, since you're "showing off", do you mind showing more? I'd be curious to see how much those monsters stick out on the sides. Thanks!

Glenn, that's the only pict I have on my digital camera. I took one like you want, along with a 3/4 view on my standard camera, and will post when the film is back. They are right at the edge of the fenders. These are on the standard AB steel wheel. When I held up the factory flare, it covered everything nicely. The tires are definitely at the edge, but the extra track width will be welcomed on side slopes, and I'll be able to turn my steering stops back in.

Greg:
Is that the RTE 3" lift, I can't remember? You gonna do driveshafts as well as the HD axles?

Mike, 3" RoverTym, but mine was the first so I don't think my front springs are what he supplies, 'cause they gave over 4" of lift. Plus I have 1" spacers up front(I like the nose to be at least level compared to nose down).

Already have a GBR rear shaft, and am upgrading the front joints to Spicer units.

Greg,

Don't take this wrong, but.......IMHO if you do not lift the body, you will lose overall functionality of your suspension travel. Sure you can cut / trim for more room, but those huge tires will require a lot of real estate if you ever go play in the rocks.

Greg, aside from the lack of stronger axle shafts and the fact that you have a true trac and a detroit is that you are running stock gears. I know that you are only going to run those tires off road but, I would think that with those tires you are going to want the gearing while you are off road. Think about it. With 33s engine braking isn't nearly as good.. With the 36s and stock gears I think you are going to really realize that you need new gears the first long steep muddy hill you go down. Even with my little ass 32s I notice the difference. I like it but, at the same time I'd hate to see you get side ways into a tree on a down hill cause you had to get hard on the brakes. But, like I said before. Looks bad ass.. I'd like to see some pics from different angles too.

eric,

that depends how far he airs down.

IMHO the only reason to put that big of meats on is to be able to air way down.

say air down till he has the same axle to ground hight of the 33" tire it replaces.then he will have the same gearing to ground speed as now and only see power loses caused by the heavier tire and force to compress the aired down tire.

now I agree he has no where near the gears he's gonna want. but if its gonna be a duel use truck I'd make sure not to gear it crazy either.

but if he's gonna air down that far he's gonna need a rock ram to steer those puppies.

Shit, I have to down shift just to get down a hill with my 32's. No gears with 36's...good luck. I hope you are no higher than 36 feet in elevation! Truck does look bad ass though. What is the correct gearing for a 36 inch tire???
THanks

Hey Greg-
I am taking a wild guess you will be it parking outside? Can it possibly fit in your garage door opening? Sorry about the post but I am always the New England practical thorn in the side who speaks up about things most people could'nt care less about. They really look great and I can't wait to see a pic with the fender flares.

Where are you gonna hang the rope ladder to get in that tree house? hehehe.......... :)

Still looks good, but man that's a lot of tire.

Damn, no one read my original post. "New gears and axles are on the agenda". I'll be going to 4.10's. That way it's still driveable with the 36's, but daily use with the 33"s will be great.

I've looked in the wheel wells and I don't think I'm going to have any major concerns. Up front my shocks are limiting up travel by about 1.5". If I leave them as is, I won't contact the wells with the 36's. If I do raise my shock mounts to get my travel back, I may have to lower my bumps stops some. In the rear, there's alot of room in there. If contact occurs, I may have to lower my bump stops. All of this is speculation until I actually get them mounted and take it out for some tests. You never know until you try, right?

greg,

limiting up travel with shocks is a major problem in its own right. I'd bring the bumps stops down and take the stress off those shocks before you do damage no matter what tires your talking.

Thom, understood. I just haven't taken the time to correct that once it was discovered. I plan on making a spacer that fits between the shock tower and the coil bucket to raise it the required amount. So much to do, so little time....

greg

I looked at that on my D1, but the air intake crosses right over the top of it on the driverside...shit!

no idea about D2?

DII is OK. The airbox is in the left front corner. Only problem maybe the pass side where the overflow tank is above the shock tower. But, it's off to the outside a bit so it shouldn't be too hard to do.

Hmmm. That doesn't look bad at all.

Now, if only some E.L.F. flunkie would pour acid on it, I could get it painted like that.
