My mates 1982 3speed RR classic V8(carb) needs a new auto gearbox.

Should he buy a 2nd hand 3sp gearbox(bare but with torque converter) for £175
or
Should he buy an 85 efi 4speed that's in a complete vehicle (minus front and rear diffs and braking system) for £200 and swap the bits over?

How straightfoward a swap is it?

The vehicle will be driven off road more than on so which box would be better in that respect?

(Oh and by the way, I'm the poor suffering mechanic whose got to do the job. Bad enough doing my own Rangie let alone a mates....)
