Lawrence

I think you mean "The Road Warrior" seeings how Max didn't have a dog in "Mad Max" and if I'm not mistaken it would be a refrence to John Wayne's "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon" because in "The Road Warrior" Max though his dog was a dingo till the end of the movie when the dog finally barked.

Sorry, I took some creative liberty. When I typed "very Road-Warrior-ish of you", it didn't look very good and generally Mel's character is often refered to (outside the movies, of course) as Mad Max across all three films, so...

Not to drag this even further from topic, but where did you get the dingo/dog reference? I've seen the first two films many times each (number 3 didn't thrill me as much) but never picked up on that. I love finding such details in plots & characters (it adds new layers to a good story) and am normally good at it (especially after multiple times seeing it), but now you have me thinking I need to run home and throw RW back on.
