I am in the market for a CB radio for trail comunications. I have done some research but I see so many choices.

little vs. alot in price
40 channel vs. alot of channels
am/usb/ssb
gain this, gain that
and more...

I know I will probably go for a good quality antenna. My question is what should make sure I get and what can I do without in respect to options? Should I go for it and spend more $$ or not? What manufacture is the best?

Thanks in advance!!

Go to http://www.popularwireless.com/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi and post in the Citizens Band Radio forum.

Bottom line CB is OLD tech. Think of AM radio and that's CB but since that's the way you want to go pick a radio that will fit into the location you want. Other than SSB there isn't much difference from one radio to the next. Don't read too much into gain since this is something that gets thrown around too much and often those claiming higher gain are blowing smoke in most cases. Gain comes from your antenna and antenna installation. With most CB radios you're splitting hairs when it comes to features unless you're dealing with physical size. They're ALL AM since that's what CB radio in the US is based on. Spend the money on the antenna and the install. Even a bad radio with a good antenna will sound MUCH better than a great radio with a cheap antenna.

I agree with everything Al says. All CBs are limited to the same power output, the way to get performance is through a matched, high gain antenna. I actually installed a matcher/SWR meter inline with my CB, and tune the antenna for whatever channel I am using.
