Anyone have any experience with this product? Just curious.

I know they make good fish-finders, no experience with any gps products from them but if the quality is similar you should be in pretty good shape.

Thanks, Carter. I sold my Garmin 176c on Ebay with the intention of getting a handheld unit. I got a good deal on the sale of the garmin as I got my money out of it. I had almost $1k invested in that setup.

Anyway, I was searching for handheld deals, and somehow I got directed to this unit from Lowrance. It is a GPS chartplotter like the 176c, however the screen is slightly larger at 6.75 inches and the resolution is greater. The unit/kit would have run about $800 to $1k if I bought it all online new, but I came across an auction on ebay and won it for $450.00. It is the whole setup, including power, external antenna, software, memory chips, etc.

I haven't received it yet as the auction closed yesterday, but it looks like it will do everything the Garmin 176 does and more. It holds Secure Digital memory chips and can take up to two 128 meg chips for maps.

I'm excited about it and look forward to giving it a try and pocketing almost $500.00 difference from the sale of my Garmin, but I was wondering if anyone else had tried it.

It should be easy to read at any rate.

You got a good deal, I was reading the specs earlier when you posted it and that thing should be pretty bad-ass. Post pics as soon as you get that beast wired up. Any idea where you are going to mount that big thing?

Not sure yet. I'm thinking it may be too big to hang from the overhead console where I had the 176. I'll have to play it by ear as the D2 doesn't have a lot of real estate available for mounting things.

Will do on the pictures though. I hope the guy ships it out on Monday so I can get it soon. I will probably pick up a couple of 128 meg chips for it as the secure digital chips are about $50 each I think.

I originally thought it could also do sonar too which would make it really bad ass for use in a boat too, but according to the website it won't do sonar. It will however do split screens and show two different zooms in each screen.

Well Greg, when you change your mind on it and want a different one, I'll buy it off of you for a really good price, and use it in my disco, and for my boat!!!

Ha ha ha, Zak. I don't think so, but if for any reason it doesn't meet my liking, I'll be sure to give you a shout.

Thanks again for the moving help.

i had the Lowrance 1600 , the screen was kick ass big. i sold it with my truck and then bought the 176c.

i wanted the emergency portablility of the 176 (walking out f a trail ratehr than dribveing) and i liked the fact that there was more stuff for it. like memory cards.

kyle got his lowrance 1600 to work with his laptop. i was never able to figure it out, though i didn't try to very hard.

all in all, it was a great unit.

You know Rob, I didn't think about the need of one for walking out of a trail. hmmmmmmm. Oh well, may end up with a hand held deal also at somepoint. I may still get one of the rino deals for a hand held.

The thing I liked about the lawrance is that it uses SD memeory. Just regular computer/camera stuff. The Magellan Maridian series uses this too. In fact, I think the Magellan Maridian Platinum could be the perfect unit if it could accept an external antenna.

lowrance

This is one step down from the 3000, the Lowrance 2400, and looks like a good deal in the above auction.

yes, that looks like a solid buy, i like the fact that this has memory cards. my 1600 didnt have them and it limited the base maps i had. i kept one of pittsburgh and one of DC as those are the cities im in most.

i think it only had 2MB memory.

if i get the 128 card you might be able to do most of the upper east coast, or where ever you are.

it doesn't come with the mapcreat CD and you cant use other peoples programs (like delorme)

once you get the CD, making a map is a fairly easy deal. you just goto this cd and draw an area around what you want to upload and then you have the nice detailed maps.

if you have any other questions let me know.

Yeah, the 2400 doesn't come with the software, but it does include the antenna and it has a single Secure digital memory slot for up to 128 meg.

The 3000 unit comes with version 5 of the map create software, the antenna and a single 16meg memory chip for the base map. You can also put up to two 128 meg chips in it, so you could greatly increase the base map and put a second detailed area chip in.

I'm going to check out the ram mounts that Carter mentioend when I get the unit. Also, will probably hit west marine for a rail mount bracket for the antenna so I can mount it straight to my roof rack. Thats the only draw back is that you get a mushroom shaped white antenna. Don't know if it will work with other antennas yet or not.

Greg,
there was a whole antenna discussion 2-3 months ago about which antennas will work. Not sure what it was titled but it's in the archives.

yeah Greg, those RAM mounts are solid. I have used them for fish finders in a marine application and they are stout as well as incredibly versatile. They make base plates specifically designed to fit the hole patterns of certain units so they give a very clean look.
