I took the weekend to change the lubricants in the '93 Rangie I just picked up. However, this one has had the grease conversion in the swivel balls according to the sticker in the engine compartment. How can I tell if the balls have the proper amount of grease? Is it supposed to be up to the level plugs? And is there a more commonly available (like at Canadian Tire) equivalent to the factory grease? Thanks |

Bill, I would switch back to oil. The PO probably put grease in there cause the seals were leaking. To answer your question I am not sure how to check the grease level. You can purchase the grease from Rovers North. If you had oil in the swivels then you will notice three plugs. The top one is to fill, the middle one is the level and the bottom is the drain. Just my opinion. John C. |

Hey John C.- I still have kept oil in my swivel balls but I carry the LR grease tubes with my truck in case the seals start leaking. I've toyed with switching over to the grease but was wondering what benefits to the oil vs. grease there was. Any opinions and why? GregH |

Well, I am no expert but in my case I had switched to grease because my seals were leaking. I like to drive thru water a lot so when the swivel housing got contaminated with water it was a pain to drain and clean the grease. So, one day I had to take apart the whole housing (I was replacing seals and inspecting my balls...hehhee) and remove all the grease and water. I decided to clean the swivel seals and put 90wt oil. My swivels aren't leaking anymore and it's easier to drain the oil and refill. Just my 2 cents. |

just make sure there is some kind of lube in there and you'll be fine. rd |

If you want to get rid of the grease, pour in some gear oil, and run for 50 miles or so. It will mix with the grease and you can drain it right out. Worked for me. |

Thanks to all for the info. I had grease in the balls of my Disco and my Series when I had those, but I put it in and knew it was there. With this new one, I was just checking what the PO had done (this unit was owned by a Euro-car garage owner and driven by his wife) and I couldn't remember if the grease comes out the level plug or not. Looks like I might have to change it over to 90 weight and go from there to make sure that the balls are all proper. But at -20C here in North Bay, ON and the 10 hour trip to Ohio for the holidays, I'll just wait for a wee bit warmer day. Thanks again. |

GregH, looks like you can give me some advice on how to build up my 4.6 engine. I have a 4.6 (valve covers down to oil pan) waiting to go into my 88 Rangie. Any tips. Thanks. |

Actually, I'm just hoping that some day I'll just be able to get a nice stock 4.6 in my RRC when the 3.9 gives up the ghost. Musky's right that keeping things stock (at least 4.6 stock) keeps it simple and more no-brainer down the road. However(hehe), I also daydream about building the biggest displacement land rover v8 possible. Looks like 5.6 liters is the limit and it takes some exotic and custom parts and NOT a small amount of $change$. I figure that I could build it myself for about $7-8K plus another $500 to 1K+/- to have Kenne Bell here locally to set up the FI...Of course that's BEFORE upgrading the rest of drivetrain to handle the added power!! Can you say lottery? |

BTW-the main thing i would make sure to do if I was putting a stock 4.6 in my vehicle is to change the timing chain/gear to a quality domestic double roller chain (not that nylon thing). Let me know how it works out-take plenty of pics. Good luck |
