Hmmm. I am looking for an engine (Complete block)for my 1996 LR. I just called my dealer in Greenville SC. they want $5648.00 for a complete engine. He said they would not sell me the block with pistons, crank, ect. But that they could sell me just the empty block. I didn't even ask what the price was. Discouraging to say the least. Joe |

I checked into getting a new engine through my dealer, LR Cape Fear. They told me a new disco II engine would cost 8,000.00. This had to have included install and the whole nine yards. |

The cross-bolted 4.0/4.6 is just an evolution of the 3.5/3.9/4.2/3.9B Rover motors, so it just bolts in where your old 3.9B went. I believe the 4.0 and 4.6 blocks are identical, they just have different pistons, rods and crankshaft. If you retain the distributor and 14CUX ECU of the '95, you can buy a ready-built long or short block and a fuel map chip from RPi, ECR or one of the other outfits that specialize in this conversion, depending on what parts you want to recycle from your 3.9B. You will need to use your 3.9B oil pan and oil pick and may need to "relieve" (pound with a mallet) the front inside of the 3.9B oil pan to make room for the larger crank journals of the 4.6. If you build your motor from a stock 4.6 (built for the GEMS "distributorless" ignition) you'll have to use a 3.9B camshaft to run your distributor along with a 3.9B front cover/oil pump. In addition, you'll have to fabricate a spacer to fit over the (crank or camshaft?) so that the timing gear lines up. However, you'll still have to get a fuel map chip from RPi or somebody so your new motor won't run too lean and burn up. ---Norm |
