i was just wondering what the big benefits of putting 4.11 or higher diffs on a truck, as well as what the pros and cons are. can you use 4.11 arb lockers?
thanks for the help guys

PROS:
Putting 4.11:1 allows you to run 33 inch rubber while keeping the engine RPM in the proper range for good accelleration and fuel efficency.
CONS:
The pinion's gear teeth often become fewer and therefore more highly stressed being as the Land Rover Ring and Pinion are a matched set for any ratio one might consider. They are seperate from the diffential carrier where the ring gear is fixed with a series of hex headed machine screws.
PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:
Great Basin Rovers or GBR is working on manufacturing 4.1:1 Gear sets for the 95-1/2 on RR's differentials. For the older RR's they are already available.
ARB's are the RD57 for 95-1/2 on RR's and RD56 for the earlier ones. In the case of the RD57 going into a second generation RR you will find the housing needs some grinding to clear the gussetting on the ARB carier. My guess is that this need will vary based on the respective differntial housing being ARBed.

Paul

The main advantage is being able to use larger dia tires without sacrificing acelleration. Engine braking is better too. Correcting speedometer for larger tires. Also they would be new. The GBRs are ~ as strong as the stock 3.54s, but inherently weaker.

Disadvantages: $800 for two sets, just for the gears. Can cause driveshaft vibration problems to get worse(by increasing the driveshaft rpm). Lower gear ratio's can also make axles break more easily.

That's all i can think of at the moment.

Hi Guys, sorry if this has been asked before, but I'm in NZ and just joined.
I have made a few mods to my 96 Disco 300tdi, which include fitting 32" tyers. my gearing is all way out. Nobody here nows of any diff ratio's that will correct this problem.
I now know that there is 4.1 diff ratios available thanks to this site, but were can I get them, who makes them, and what sort of coin are we talking?

Regards
Blair

Blair,
Try Key 4WD in Queensland, Gold Coast. This is Maxi-drive, they can send whatever you need. Their 4.1's have one of the best reputations, as do the lockers themselves.

weak 4.11's - has anyone here actually broken one of the GBR sets??

I ask because, I thought due to the better alloy in the GBR's they would be stronger than the stock units.

I think this argument is over-done, IMO.

fwiw - (which isn't much!)
