This is'nt Land Rover related but here goes. I've recently decided to compete in some local half triathlons, or triathlons. Now here's my question, anyone have any suggestions on a tri-bike somewhere under $750 or so.

Any and all help is appreciated,

Look at used bikes, road bikes cant be that abused. I say go for Ultegra or 105 drivetrain. I would keep saving my money. you coul do well for abourt 13-1600 $$. I have a S-works M2 mountain bike for sale. its all XTR except for the front derailer.

Are you set on buying a new bike? If not, try to find an older Klein Quantum. They are beautiful road bikes. As Phillip mentioned, look for a 105 or Ultrega drivetrain.

Here's a link to one of the tri shops I deal with. This is about the cheapest I've ever come across for a full tri specific bike.

Ema is correct about the Klein Quantum. I just sold one with a full Sachs "New Success" grouppo, absolutely mint.....for only $975.00 Just search the net ect. because they are out there. If you go Ti check Airborne, good bike for the buck. Have fun with your quest.

GT recently went out of buis. I just picked up a ZR 3.0 with all 105 componets and carbon fork for $899 after pedals i was still under a grand.

Micheal,
If your looking for a tri specific ride then check out The Colorado Cyclist. The always have a tri bike cheap. Unless your only planning on using it for triathlon I would buy a nice Crit rig(73.5 degree head/seat angle) and you can throw on a tri bar and a foreward seatpost. With the ahead stems now you can easily have a tri stem/bar/cable set-up as well as one for just road. I have seen some good deals on a sight Mountain Bike Review.com They have a road bike section with some good deals to be had. One caution, be weary of older aluminum frames and especialy ones that have been raced and or dropped. Can you say SNAP! Good luck,

The bad news: Good Tri bikes are expensive. Triathletes are well known for blowing more money on bikes than trust fund baby MTB'ers. A good Tri bike starts at $2000 and climbs to $6000+

The good news: Since Triathletes are so well know for wanting the latest and greatest (and willing to pay dearly for it), there is a plethora of good used stuff out there.

Research a lot, look on Ebay, and if this is something that you really want to get into - plan to spend some more bucks. You can probably get a killer used Tri bike for $1200-$1500 that originally ran $4000 new and will serve you well.

Do NOT get a standard road bike. What you are looking for is more of a time-trial setup.

Good Luck,

Curtis

Curtis,
If you look at current elite level triathletes you see many of them on modified road rigs. The reason is (and I'm sure you know this if you ride a tri bike ) tri bikes ride and handle like SHIT on wheels. 650c wheels are a nightmare and offer so little benifit. I think most folks use them so they can sport a 56 chainring and pose. Here in Colorado most courses are very hilly and with only tri bars it's impossible to climb even the shortest of climbs. I think another reason for the road bike is the cost. Most tri bikes are so overpriced that it's stunning. The technology is stalled and the prices that folks like QR and Felt charge are laughable. If Michael were a elite level Ironman length triathlete I would agree with your recomendation, but for the regular age grouper I think a modifeid road rig would make much more sense for both training and raicing. Just my two cents.

"...(and I'm sure you know this if you ride a tri bike )..."

Naw - I have never even thrown a leg over a tri-bike. I am too much of a cycling purist. Strictly road and MTB. Tri running and swimming kills the cycling muscles. Any knowledge I may or may not have was from years in the cycling industry another lifetime ago :)

Curtis,

So then you do know:) I wasn't looking to insult anyone. The truth is I to have spent many years racing and working in the industry(long ago)and watched tri folks fall into the trap. The trap was their friends have all the cool tri shit and they want the cool shit too. What they find out is many times they are slower on tri set-ups because they have a horible position and can't breathe or relax. The other piece is they get boxed in and get frustrated when they can't join the local club ride because the tri bars make them a road hazzard. I am not a purist and I respect all who mount a bike and ride be it a Hybrid, mountain, road, tri, cyclo, track, bmx....
I gotta go get on the rollers track season starts in 3 months. Cheers,
