Does anyone know if the new style headlights on the 2003 Disco can mounted on a 2000 Disco 2? They look the same size and shape.

I don't know but if you beat the headlights as hard as this dead horse has been beaten they are bound to pop in there eventually. :) :) -Theres my smart-ass comment of the day.....

Didn't I read hear recently that those headlight assemblies cost, like, $700 EACH SIDE? And, yes Carter, that was a good one...

You can get the headlights from Northwest Parts.
www.northwestparts.com for about $275 a side. He can get them in either "European" version (for off road use only) or "US" version.

It is not known if these will fit a 1999-2002 D2, but the probability is fairly high. I don't need 2003 lights that bad on our D2, but if I did, I would get the european E-code version.

In 7" round headlights for classic Rangies, there is a HUGE difference in light pattern quality between the Hella DOT-approved replacements ("vision plus") and the real E-code lamps. The E-codes have a much sharper cutoff on low beam with better peripheral view, and a high beam pattern that is very much like that on the Hella rally 4000 "euro beam" driving light (only not as bright).

I don't know if the difference between US and European Disco headlights is that great. Maybe someone who has driven both could comment (Nadim?). In some european countries, Disco's come with driver-adjustable headlight aiming, to compensate for rear loads. DOT doesn't trust the intelligence of US drivers enough to allow them on our vehicles.

If you want more light from your disco headlights, I would suggest the following:

1. Put in a relay system (e.g. Jacobs/Painless Wiring). this will add some brightness, but it will greatly increase the life of your wimpy headlight switch contacts.

2. Get some high-output, standard wattage (55/65w) bulbs to replace your OEM ones. Sure, you can get mega- wattage 100/130w bulbs, but they will not last as long and may melt the connector sockets. I am very partial to the Osram/Sylvania units that are widely avalable. All are DOT-approved and not intended as HID wanna-be's. All have different fillaments and some mixture of iodine/xenon gas under higher pressure. Some have a coating on the lens to alter the color "temperature".

http://www.sylvania.com/auto/carapp/

I have "Xtra Vision" bulbs ($16 ea.)in the 95 D1. They are the standard halogen color (3200 deg.K), but visibly brighter than the OEM units. Hence, I tend to believe their claims of 35% more output.

The 91 Rangie has Hella E-code 7" headlights and Sylvania "Cool blue" (3700 deg.K) bulbs ($12/ea). These work very well with E-code lamps and are whiter (not blue) than the OEMs or the Xtra Vision.

The D2 has the new Sylvania "White Star" (4100 deg. K) bulbs ($24/ea.). They are more expensive, but still less than most PIAA bulbs and way less than HID units. They are "very" white, yet still without any blue tint or that nasty peripheral purple glare of HIDs. They are also not as efficient as HIDs.

Although the D2 headlight is supposed to have the same lens pattern as the D1 headlight, these bulbs really do provide a sharper cutoff on low beam, which is why their "bluer" color doesn't bother me in the fog. In comparison, the OEM D2 foglight output seems almost "amber".

If you DO go with european headlights, make sure they are NOT for RHD Rovers, the beam pattern will only annoy you and everyone else on the road.

3. Lastly, if you need more light, install more lights. For the price of 1 2003 headlamp assembly, you can get a whole Hella Rally 4000 kit from Susquehana Motorsports.

Good luck in your decision. Oh, and Carter, better stop that or you WILL go blind. Your night vision is usually the first to go.

Talk to me about the installation of the relay in a D1

I emailed "www.northwestparts.com" (great company BTW) and I found out that the new 2003 headlights will fit into the D1. You have to buy
different headlight mouldings (under lights) and possibly drilling... I wish someone would try it and then tell me how hard or easy it was to do.

Relays,
Been doing it to every car I've owned for years. I'll try to post pics of my setup soon as a got a Digital Camera for Christmas. :-)
Here are my tips and observations.
1) Do it, its worth it.
2) I use all marine grade stuff. I've had way to many problems with the crappy wire and connectors you get at most Auto Parts places. West marine, or Boaters World have high quality wire and connectors as well as nice fuse blocks to use. Or you can go the PainlessWiring way. For my last install for my Hella 500's I used the West marine 12ga 2-wire insulated wire set. Each wire is insulated as well as a sheath around the pair. Saves a lot of electrical tape or wire shrouding. Sorry for the LONG URL address:

I also used a 6-pos fuse block that I mounted on top of my battery using a block of wood that I carved down to be held under the battery hold down clamp. Then screwed the fuse block to this wood. I moved away from Blade fuses back to BUss fuses because I can check them without pulling them at night with a flashlight in about 5 seconds. Nice when its raining, wet, and your troubleshooting a lighting problem.
The link shown below links to a similar fuse block. Mine has a nice plastic cover that covers the unit from splashes (not submersion) and seems better built than the unit in the picture but it could just be the picture.

3) I use 12ga wire because it can easily handle 100w light bulbs. One 30a relay is enough for two 130w light bulbs with room to spare.
4) I use 80/130w bulbs. I have not had any problems in my Disco with melting the Light housings. However, you WILL melt standard H4 bulb connectors. I have some CIBIE units that accept up to 10ga wire directly into them and can withstand very high wattage bulbs. EVen 160w with no problems. Cant remember where I got them though. Some friends have filed down the connectors on teh H4's so they can use standard spade connectors though. Which works well enough in a Jam.
5) Shrink Wrap everything
6) Cary and extra Relay in the Glove Box.
7) My stock Disco lights after relaying and better bulbs put out about as much light on low beam as my cars that have Euro's. Including the RRC 7" round. However the highs on the Disco dont have the best beam pattern IMHO. The relaying and brighter bulbs help but the adding of the Hella 500's on the bumper was a welcome addition for the highs.
8) I drive on scary dark roads with lots of animals so to me, TONS of light is a neccessity. If you live in the city you may not need my results.
9) Make DARN sure your lights are properly aimed if you do this otherwise all the poor souls you blind will be a danger to you as they cant see and may drive into you. :-)
10) DOnt get blue bulbs. There are volumes of Data out there explaining why they destroy night vision, dont illuminate objects well, etc. Just get quality made bulbs. Preferably with a Xenon mixture or other quality gas mixture, and higher wattage if you need it.

YOu buy the lights and ship them to me and I'll take all the pictures you want. :-) I'll even build you a wiring harness to make your installation nice and easy. :-)

I heard that they will just pop into a D2 easy, and the D1 will need lots of time and trimming esp. around the turn signal part and the brows.
