That would be "The Two Towers", the second "Lord of the Rings" installment. It will be at least a few more days before we can get out to see it, anyone????

Yeah, it was great. The battle scenes were especially awsome. There is one scene involving surfing down a staircase on a shield while killing people with a sword that was kind of dumb but other than that is was almost flawless.

How could you possible sit and watch a movie for three straight hours!? Is it better then the first one, because I fell asleep about 3 or 4 times while I watched it! I sure as hell don't want to waste my $8 and 3 hours of my time!

Just saw it last night. Or, was I just dreaming?(it was past 2am when it was over). :)

I thought it was a great movie. Lots of fighting, maybe not as well rounded as the first one. Like the first one, it's pretty much non-stop. The end was a bit abrupt and confusing, so don't fall asleep and mis any of it, cuz i think may have.

I'm sure you'll love it. The little furry footed boys are back!

Some of have things called "attention-spans" thats how :)

Nah, if you didn't like the first one don't bother.

Also really don't go see it if you haven't seen the first one yet, as it will make no sense at all. One thing that has been iritating to me is all the dumb ass critics complaining about the plot structure. Tolkien wrote the trilogy as one book but the publishers decided to split it up into three therefore the second book is obviously not going to have a clear begining or ending and the same would logically follow for a movie that acuratly represents it. Just another case of morons complaining about stuff they don't know enough about.

Saw it last night......

Note: SPOILER! Scroll past if you don't want any surprises ruined....

Like the book, it was darker, being "Act 2" of a 3-act play....

Gollum was impeccable, they couldn't have done better, nailing his schizophrenia, and keeping some humor to him. The Gandalf/Balrog battle was great, possibly my favorite bits. The Ents were dang cool.... very neat.

Lots of the little things from the books were present: overall, it really matched the book very well. But, there were some changes that were made that you could tell were done to help make the movie more interesting for those who hadn't read the books, but, for those sticklers like me that wanted it dead-on-accurate, it irked me (but just a very little, because it was so well done). The warg attack, the elves at Helms Deep, and the arrival of Eomer at Helms Deep instead of Fangorn Forest showing up overnight... oh, and Aragorn's lost-bit, along with his belief that Arwen went over the Sea.... while that was done to heighten the romantic intrigue with Eowyn, it didn't need to be meddled with that much, IMHO....
BUT! As Peter Jackson himself pointed out, the movies are NOT the books, the books themselves would be hard to do as-is, and, I must applaud him for managing to keep it as close to the book while keeping any introduced bits true to flavor.

A most wholly remarkable movie, I must say.

I do concur w/ Carter, Legolas' skateboarding on a shield was a bit-too-much, but, hey, if it gets some kids more interested in it.....

IMHO, FWIW.....

PPS:

We took two of our kids to it, too... (the 10-month-old stayed w/ grandparents, we just took our 13-year-old and our 7-year-old). Both of them were mesmerized by it, totally engrossed.... At the end of it, my daughter again said "Why is it over already?!"

(We took both of them to the first one last year, which at the end, both of the kids were complaining when the movie was over, because they loved it so much and were ready to see the rest of it..... yes, my at-the-time 6-year-old son really loved it that much, that he watched the whole thing w/o a peep... it inspired him so much that he picked up the Hobbit the next day and started reading it... didn't put it down until he was well into Roast Mutton, when he was sent to bed.... the next day, he made it all the way to Flies and Spiders.... ;))

Damn, I'm jealous I haven't see it yet! Leslie, thanks for labling your "spoiler" note, I DID scroll past without reading, and I appreciate your heads-up.

Chris, the first film was the shortest three hours of my life. As well as being visually lush, it felt like a thrill ride, start to finish. Oh, and certain (male) Elves give me wood.

I'm waiting to see it too until the crowds die down. I'd rather wait a couple weeks and have a theatre all to myself (as much as possible, anyways) than have to endure about 200 gumbies all around me making stupid comments.

I've only read the books like, oh, 12 times. I'm a geek, yes. Actually we were planning on watching Fellowship of the Ring on DVD tomorrow night and then going to see TTT in the theatre right afterwards until the person at the theatre told me this afternoon I'd have to get there an hour ahead of time to get a decent seat after buying my ticket.

Nope, I'll wait then watch it a few times in the theatre like I did with the first one.

I saw it opening day with a few Tolken geeks. I'm currently reading the FOTR for hte first time. Amazing book, can't wait to finish it and read the rest.

Loved the movie! CG was incredible and hte story was great. Can't wait to go back and see it again.

I've seen FOTR at least 10 times and it gets better every time I watch it, so I can't wait for TTT to come out on DVD with the extended scenes.

I love these books so much, I'm talking to my wife to name our fist daughter Eowyn. Not sure though. FUnny thing is that i ahve a good friend name Dain Aragorn, he hates his name though. WE'll see.

Zak, you get dressed up? :) Did you wear your Dweb cape??

I saw it on opening night too. I thought it was excellent. KJ, if you like the first one, you'll probably like this one more. Especially if you're like a lot of women out there and have a thing for Aragorn. He has a cape too. :)

karen i went to see it opening night, it was fantastic.

i wish i had rented the first episode again so it was all fresh in my head. but i was able to figure everything out once it got rolling.

the liv tyler romance was a little drawn out and the creature with multiple personalities' voice annoyed me (jar-jar-binks like)

the trees were my favorite.

I hope that they make the extended DVD version for each movie of the series. I watched the extended version of the first film last night where they added about 30 minutes of extra footage and it really made a difference. Well, I think it did anyways. I'll go and see TTT some time this coming week but, I'm looking more towards the extended version of the DVD that you know they are going to make, then watching the movie in the theater.

I've read the books several times through, and have always enjoyed the experience, and have learned something new each time. I believe they have been successful and popular for so long because Tolkien tells a great story of character interaction and good perservering over evil, a story that would work equally well in any setting, modern or medieval, fantasy or real. The elves and dwarfs and ents and others are really immaterial to that story. His writing is far and away better than most others.

I've seen the Fellowship of the Ring movie, and thought it very well done. Of course, it does not follow the original writing; it's a movie, not the book. Movies are very different from books, especially in the amount of detail and character development they can contain. Still, it was well done, and I'm looking forward to seeing the Two Towers, once the crowds abate.

Well, we finally got to see this flick tonight. It does NOT disappoint! I'd say it was fairly non-stop compared to "Fellowship", though that one was pretty action-packed. Carter you jealous-hard-up-rich-spoiled-brat, you WISH you had the effect on women that Legolas does! I KNOW you'd surf down stairs on a shield 100 times a day if you could, LOL! ;)

I'm not sure I think this installment is a *better* movie than the first, but it certainly has stunning visuals and LOADS of excitement. Thing is, the first movie was SUCH a wonderful film, and SO different from anything else, that I had all faith this one would be just as good. It certainly is absolutely on par, which means another 5 stars from me.

I didn't think the romantic departures were that long or distracting, it worked fine for me. I felt you could see Aragorn becoming fully-formed and King-like, brilliantly done. I like the lack of sentimentality in some aspects, like the DIRT on our heroes, and for me, the fact that the horses were not all Hollywood pretty boys. Even the lovely Shadowfax WAS lovely, but not unreal. If you see the movie again, notice that when ever another horse is near Shadowfax, his ears are PINNED to his head, like every horse who knows he's special would do. Many other horses were very ordinary looking, which makes it more REAL in my mind. The Orcs were even more awful to behold, fabulous! Gollum was good, and sometimes brilliant, but I registered the Jar-Jar thing, too. Much more would have been TOO much, but he was very accurately drawn from the books I'd say. I blame Spielberg, that ^&*# Jar-Jar had no excuse.

Sam is allowed to shine in this film, as is correct. Perhaps the cornerstone to this whole saga is the point that everyone has an important place in the world and an important role to play.

Dayum, I can't wait until "The Return of the King"!

Karen :):):):):) Oh, and Legolas RULES! HAHAHA!

I suspected that you'd like it.... :)

Like I said, the stickler in me was a little irked with the deviations from the book, but, it was tastefully restrained when done.....

I agree, I'm eager to see Shelob, Eowyn taking out The WitchKing, and Aragorn's crowning....

I wonder if they'll retain the Paths of the Dead?

Hmmm..........

Leslie,

I'm DEFINITELY going to re-read the books before "The Return of the King" comes out. I said that last year, but it's been a coupla decades since I read them, uh, maybe longer! You're leaving me scratching my head on a few things, though the Shelob is ever-present in my daily life, having recruited her image to help me fight a real-life battle I'm preparing for. I think because it's been so long since I read the books, the deviations aren't as apparent and therefore not troublesome to me. I'm ret to go back and see TTT again!

Karen :) Oh, did I mention Legolas RULES??? LOL!

For anyone who cares, if you have a Tolkein book at home and theres an "about the author" section in the cover, it may tell you that he moved to the south of england for a while (Dorset or Hampshire - its changed since then) Well, from the testament of locals and people in the area, as far as we can tell, the house my uncle lives in that I used to live in for a while too is his old house. Which is nice.....

Not much of a claim to fame but seemed appropriate for this thread

Can we evolve this thread into "whats your claim to fame?" Might be fun....

Karen,
We went to see it the night after Christmas....I watched most of the first one but had fallen asleep in parts (of course, we WERE at home in bed watching it!!), but I was definitely awake for the second one! Although I didn't like all the brutal fighting and the ORCS are SCARY, I was impressed. Gandalf is one of my favorites, was from the books as well....and his horse is AWESOME!!! Though there were a few others (the solid, draft-type that the two children rode to safety) that I liked too.

Now, just let it be known that Aragon is GORGEOUS and atleast LEGAL in age compared to Legolas,(well, he just looks pre-pubescent)!

And the trees were my favorite too. Of course, I'm a tree-hugger NOT humper! :)

Sus,

Though he's semi-retired now, in his prime my horse Domino was at least as nice as the Andalusian that played Shadowfax in the film. And I swear, he's JUST like that, whistle, and no matter what, he comes galloping. He's an awesome horse, and still one of the smartest I've ever known.

As for Legolas, don't forget, as an immortal Elf though he *looks* pre-pubescent ("not that there's anything WRONG with that") he's probably, like 200 years old! LOL! That make my lusting any more tolerable? And Aragorn I wouldn't kick out of my Fellowship cloak, either ;) HAHAHA!

We saw it last Sunday ... LOL!!! I'm laughing because I have to say some of my favorite moments were watching the horses - Shadowfax was awesome!! (but KJ my little arab from way back used to pin her ears back every time another horse got too near her as well - in her case she just had bad manners, LOL) But most of all, Aragon (sp? too lazy to go find the book right now). Oh man. Aragon. I could watch him 24/7. Needless to say, the hubby "got lucky"(? LOL) that night. hehehe

And yes, Legolas is very fine!! LOL, never thought I'd get turned on by an elf in tights!!

As for mares, they are expected to pin their ears, aren't they? ;) I know nearly all of mine have! Some for mere effect, and then they take a LONG look to see how it's been received, and others to truly say, "Back OFF! Except three days of the month...."

I first heard it in an interview with Orlando, but had to search the web for where it was quoted, since I'm here at work.... Although it doesn't say it in the movie either, it was part of the background material given to Orlando for getting into the part mentally.... supposed to have helped to add depth to his seriousness...

But it's so pretty, my precious. It's mine, MINE! I want it back, my precious.

I know. That ebay can be addictive. OK, I'll admit my geekness. I bought a couple Land Rover models off ebay last week. A cool "Driving Experience" D90 model and a Trek Disco (same as the ones pictured in the "Land Rover Models" thread). :) I almost got my hands on a rear cargo matt and a LR flag (yes, I said flag. It was like for $9 and was this giant LR flag. Thought it'd be cool in my garage) but some guys dropped bids in at the last second and lost both. The mat would have been a good buy too. Started off at $15, ended up going for $51 to someone. That's wayyy cheap.

Hey KJ, is that why you bought that broach? In anticipation of your future cloak? :)

HAHAHAHA! I swear, we need a geeky hobbies confessional thread here. Hey, I bought a Disco model a long time ago, AND bought another for a friend of mine in the UK! Her sister drives a Disco, but she paid little attention until *I* got mine! Always the same thing, what is right under our nose never looks as exotic as what's over there.....As for Fellowship cloaks, we haven't gotten our DiscoWeb capes yet, so......And Alan, on ebay, the only way to go is to snipe at the VERY end! I average seven seconds, so I think I just outed myself on ebay geekdom, too! LOL!

Heh, heh, a pug pillow? Didn't know they made those. Yep, my dog's my little shadow. Follows me everywhere. Thinks she's a big dog though. Isn't afraid to mix it up with the big boys if they get too forward with her. But can snore like a chainsaw! Actually, it's kinda funny when she snorts. It really freaks the big dogs out. They don't know what to make of it. Fawn ones are really cute too. My sister has one that's tongue is too long for her mouth so about an inch of it always sticks out. Gives her a bit of a "dumb" look but she isn't too bright to begin with. I've see her run into doors before.
