went and did some wheelin with a friend of mine that has a new mercedes G-wagon no mods. he killed my 02 range rover with no mods. Now i'm thinking about trading it in for a defender. what is the newest 110 i can get? I wanna show him up big time. there was mutiple times today there was trails my rover couldn't do and his truck was all over. Then i thought maybe he is a way better driver so i tried with his truck and did the ones i could'nt do in my rover. Now he wants to put rover recovery vehicle sticker on his g-wagon. need to find a 110 quick help
P.S. anyone in the Sedona Area?

hmmm... newest D110 would be a 1993 since you live in the US. And even a new 110 stock may not beat a G stock due to the lockers on the G. Learn your vehicle and what it can do before going out to buy another. Might want to talk to Bill at www.bb4wa.com too.

Prescottj -

If a G-wagon beat a RR, you should consider a course like Al has recommended. It could be that some hands on training in how to get the best out of the RR could change your mind!

Either I say "yeah you need a new truck to show up your friend" and I'm the stupid spoiled rich college guy who thinks money can buy everything or I say "You need to learn to use the capable truck you allready have" and then I'm stupid spoiled college guy with no money trying to tell others how to spend theirs. I'm a loser either way :)

Why do you think a 110 will beat your friends G-wagon. chances are he will still beat you, what kind of trails were you having problems with. maybe it was your tires or not to insult your driving "but" The RR should have been able to keep up pending on the trails, I will put my $$ on tires and skill level being the problem not the RR.

Prescott,

I used to have a lot of trouble with my rig. The problem was that the truck was up to the challenge, the major malfunction was me. Once I learned what the truck liked and didn't like, it became a totally different beast off road.

I do believe that the RR has ETC, if you work with the ETC I am pretty sure you can make it work good for you. Also, a good set of Mud tires makes the world of difference.

Go get em'!

I have a late model RR with ETC - it does definitely take some getting used to, very different driving style required.

Also, if you don't go at obstacles correctly you can totally confuse the computers and the system will work against you not with you.

I find the lines and speeds required for P38s and DIIs to be quite different from the prior model LRs.

G500 = 3 factory lockers... RR = Trac Cont... Defender = no lockers and no TC... G500 will walk away from you.. Not sure what year your RR is but, why not get some lockers for it and level the playing field a bit.

I thought the late RR had only the rear ETC not all 4 corners like on the D2. Not that the ETC will beat the 3 lockers on the G but that's another flame war :)

Either way picking the right line and other tricks like left foot braking will go a long way.

Al, the P38 does have 4 wheel ETC. And if you want to start the flame war we can discuss lockers vs. ETC!

Based on my experience, other than heavy duty rock crawling, ETC makes things a lot easier. But you definitely have to figure out how to drive it.

preskit j -

don't dump the rangie until you get some arb lockers on it, (front and rear) - some good a/t michelin 16's. you will then atleast be on par with the g-wagen in that sense. some light trimming of the bumpers front and rear would also help....

(also been thinking of adapting a snorkel for use in one.....)

so with lockers, a snorkel, and adventure rack /ladder combo and some cool lights and you'll be all set!!

i think a tricked out rangie is v.v.cool - and possibly my next car.

You should just get the rangie use the extra what 20 or so grand left in your pocket. use that to modify the rangie then go wheel with your friend you both now spent the same amount of money and see who's is better.

Kyle & Al,

Please let us start up the ETC dabate again! ETC rocks when included with a TT & CDL! Oh - hold on - ETC sucks in every other DT configuration. Yes, it can get the average yahoo through an obstacle better than that same yahoo in a D1. However, how relevant in this when we are comparing ourselves to a rig with 3 diff locks like the G. If one were to throw 3 diff locks on a D1 and a D2, the D1 would smoke the D2 due to better departure angles. Who knows who would win over in a Rangie vs. G compaoro, but who cares anyways.

Ummm...I take exception to the word "smoke". So my ass bangs and scrapes a little more..."smoke" is too relative a term. A few degrees of increased departure doesn't equal "smoke".

Chris,

I can only assume you live in an area where departure angle does not mean too much. Where I live every little bit really matters. The alternative is bent up body panels - not "my ass bangs and scrapes".

Not trying to get into a pissing match but what I was getting at was a common denomanator to clarify your statement "the D1 would smoke the D2 due to better departure angles". I stated that "smoke" is too relative a term and one that is more opinion vs. fact. What I want to know is what "smoke" means to you. Is it going over/through the same obstical? or going over/ through the same obstical with less damage?

-Chris

P.S. -And yes, departure does mean alot to me. Where do you live?

15 year old G wagens refurbed and detailed$20-25000 cdn.
a friend imports them into Vancouver from the fodderland.
pretty good off road too.
as a matter of fact i thought it would make an excellent expedtion vehicle. the diesel engine and all the romm in back was impressive.
..... i think there will be alot of them around in the future. The US Army and Marines are using them extensivly.(hummer does not fit into a chinnook helocopter) for special(ized) units.
And the cdn army is looking at possibly an order of excess of 1000 units.
Watch for the influx.
I like my disco, but would love to jazz up at gwagen for camping.

"Smoke" is the correct and substantiated term. This is fact and not opinion. It is a strong term - I will give you that. To most it will not even matter. However, measure the angles yourself. I live in Utah. I drive a D2. I wheel with D1's so my opinion is not biased. I WISH the D2 was as good as the D1. The reality is that if you lock and lift both up, the D1 is better than the D2 off road. You can call that: smoked, beat, kicked its ass, or whatever you want :)

Any idea what the stock departure angle of the D1 is? I think they got the d2 at 25 deg. That's probably with SLS.

Sounds like you need a little trimming on that rear end Curtis. :)

Ok, Thats what I was looking for, rock crawling. I agree with your assesment with the variables you describe. Hopefully I can get some first hand knowledge on Utah trails someday. For now New England trails are a challenge enough for me.

Chu,

Hehehehahaha! (with evil smile) I have plans my friend. Yes I do. However, I do not have the time to implement them yet. Once I get past my garage modification (raised insulated cieling and heat), I will turn to butchering my rig up :)

Were there any d1's in your recent BB trip?

Chris: Only some of what I do is rock crawling. The D2's departure angle has not been too much of a liability there because there are typically different approach path options. The mointain trails are a different story.

Prescott,
Drop your Rover in at the local off road shop and have lockers fitted front and rear. (does the RR not already have rear LSD?) If you honestly feel it wasnt your driving that let you down or lack of familiarity with the the RR, at least then youll be on even ground. The G probably has better approach and departure angles but not by much. The G would be down on power too I wouild have thought. Try again with lockers and more time in your car. There is no good reason why you shouldnt keep up the G. Wagen.

Hands down . . . lockers work better than ETC. I think the "Hole in the Rock" video allows one to witness the two systems at work over similar terrain and setup. You can watch all the wheel spin and struggle the D2's had that the locked D1's just cruised over.

In all my years of getting stuck and getting others unstuck in the bayou's of Louisiana, getting high centered or loosing traction from all the muck was the main reason to get pulled out. Lockers or no lockers, if you don't have traction, your stuck. So, I never truly appreciated the argument over lockers, limited slips and ETC until I moved to Arizona. Here, your not going to get high centered unless your making a really bad decision. I drive a D2 now and can say that with a little practice and patience ETC does a really good job but it doesn't compare with lockers.

Of course, after a year of scaling the canyon walls in Arizona I became immune to the thought of getting stuck. It took a little southern Alabama mud to remind me getting high centered still conquers all. Thank God for Warn.
