Today, for the third time in two years, my 88 range rover broke the altenator belt. Holding true to Rover tradition it broke in maybe the worst possible time it could have: the middle of a blinding snow storm, late at night on New York city highways. I was wondering what it is i could be doing to cause the altenator belt to keep breaking. I changed all the belts a while ago with all the same brand (i don't remember what it is) and the altenator broke twice since then. Is there something i could be doing wrong? MAybe it's too tight? Loose? What is a good brand of betls to use or does it not even matter. DOes anyone know the size of the altenator belt, i have to buy a new one tommorow and i don't know the exact size. Any info would be great thanx |

Stephen: I would recommend using ONLY Land Rover brand belts purchased from the dealer. That way you can be sure it's not some no-name belt that has been sitting around in a parts house for several years. Do not overtighten when you install it. So long as the belt does not slip under load it's tight enough...tightening any more than that is pointless and just puts more stress on the belt and the alternator bearings. |

start carrying around one of those emergency belt kits that have links...casue it sounds like you are cursed. that's not a 'typical' land rover problem that i've heard of. rd |

That's a whole lot a belts to be breaking. I've never had a problem with any of them, but then I only use genuine LR belts. There is a difference. Now alternators . . . don't get me started. |
