Hi everybody,

I have some friends here in Houston from Germany and they wanted to see "real" America. On a whim last night, we decided to take a "road trip", we are piling into my DII this morning as I type.

We are going to head west on I-10 more or less until we hit the ocean. We are going to hang around CA until whenever then head back east.

We are stopping in Las Cruces for sure to scout for the chili challenge. Any other ideas on the I-10 corridor or ideas for off-road adventure out in CA. On the east bound segment we're gonna go back via the Grand Canyon and Colorado.

If anybody out there wants to go adventuring and show us their local area we'd love to join up.

Just drop me an e-mail with a contact (or I'll e-mail my number back to you)when I have internet access.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

If you have time, you could head for Four Corners or Munument Valley from Grand Canyon. You could pick up 191, go up to I70 through Moab, take 70 across the Rockies and come down I25 on the other side. Or you could go up 666 and check out Mesa Verde. Just some ideas.

Damn, sounds great. Wish I could take off on a whim and drive to California :). Have fun and post some pics for us. Oh and Lake Powell/Hoover Dam is really cool also, lots of places rent house boats I would suggest getting one for a day or so, the place is absolutely beautiful.

You probably know about this one already but the Imperial Sand Dunes just over the AZ/CA border along Interstate 8 are real scenic and unique. I don't know how far you can drive into the dunes but if you are heading towards the San Diego area these dunes are worth checking out on the way. Drive Safe.

The dunes are called "Glamis" and you can go all over them but you need a whip flag. Should give you a chance to get accquainted with having your disco stuck in sand. For a great offroad side trip you can go north of the 8 (after the 10) and cut through Ocotillo Wells and the Anza Borrego Desert state park. That's our little hotspot and it's pretty fun. However, if you are looking for "Real America" (whatever that means) you should go north to the Grand canyon. YOu'd be best off going north to four corners and to the north rim of the Grand Canyon (vastly superior to the south). Try a place called Torroweap. Unforgettable.

What everyone said and if you're taking the I-8 then after Anza Borrego, go to San Diego stay in Downtown area then head north on I-5 to La Jolla (30 mins.) and go East on HWY 52 to I-15 North and head to Las Vegas to see the New Year's Eve Party on the strip (about 4.0 hrs. drive from La Jolla, San Diego). Then you can head to Grand Canyon, Arizona or Bryce Canyon; Moab, Utah.
If you want to spend more time in So. Cal. and see Los Angeles (Beverly Hills, Hollyweird, Venice Beach, etc. then just take I-5 North from La Jolla, San Diego and it is about 2.5 hours passing thru Orange County, Long Beach, etc. There's just too much to see out here and I'm sure your friends from Deutschland will enjoy.

Our family owns a house boat on Lake Powell. I grew up vacationing in Bull Frog Bay. You cannot go wrong there. The place is amazing.

chaco canyon in the four corners area of new mexico is awesome..all dirt roads to get in..lots of offroading near by...lots of ancient kivas and other native american sites.

also when you go to the grand canyon go to the north rim...all dirt roads. no concession stands, no t shirt vendors, lots of wildlife and its truly incredible.. your rover will love you for taken it there

Your best choice for scenic vistas and interesting short offroading opportuniies is Sedona Az.2hr north of Phoenix.I have been to all the other places mentioned and they are all great (I love toroweap chaco and the Yuma dunes}but your German friends can see spectacular red rock scenery ,Indian Ruins.cowboys, cattle & one of the 10 best swimming holes in the US as well as do moderate to hard offroading. shop in an beautiful Mexican style shopping plaza. and eat food prepared by cordon bleu trained cooks all in the same 12hrs in the Sedona area.No i don't live there alas.

Hi,

Thanks for the tips and ideas. We had a great time. I loaded a few pics on my website at:

http://www.chrisurquieta.com/sw_usa_trip.htm

I'll be heading back out there at the end of the month to see more. Just didn't have enough time this go-around so I'm considering this a "scouting trip".
