Hi all,I placed a tester on my rover 3.9 that tested positive for exhaust gasses in the cooling system. This eventuated from a split expansion tank causing water loss and overheating.I have just completed pulling the heads off but was suprised to see that the head gaskets look in tact??.could it be that the heads have warped to the extent that the problem was occuring without damage to the gaskets??.As I am about to order parts required I want to be sure I remove the faulty components. |

Could be cracked heads or cracked block, also porous block. Check the heads for warpage, look for evidence of cracks (not always obvious). Switch to composite gaskets and 4.0 style head bolts. Ron |

I did the same thing and I had a cracked block. Found it out after putting it all back together. Go to the RPI web site and read all about it. I put a 4.6 and rechipped my ECU. Best money I have ever spent on a vehicle. I would NOT use that block. 4.0 liter short blocks are a good deal. just redo the heads and get the short block will save a lot of money and headaches. |

Brett If your interested, I have 2 composite head gaskets and an intake valley gasket available. I was going to use them on my 4.0 but ended up not needing them.. Long story.. They'll fit a 3.9 also. Tim |

This was a fairly straight forward conversion. I went thru RPI for the 4.6 short block. My heads were fine, as in no cracks. Had all new exhaust valves installed. Had to send the ECU to RPI for rechipping. That was $1250. (FedEx) Short block with liters, gaskets, cam, etc was $2800. US customs 325. Install at a shop 1400. This was a deals do to the F**kup on their parts with the head gasket deal. From this point on there only replacing the whole engine. Can't see the cracks in the block. The performance is AWESOME!! Very Fast even with 33's and 3.54 gears. Way faster then stock tires with the 4.0. This was worth the money!! Wife even likes it now. I have a 5" lift too. Gas mileage up about 2 mpg's. Good luck.
