Which one has better quality?

I have the factory rail grabbers (crossbars). Thule has a product called Snowcat - with this, you dont need the crossbars which I already have. Also the other choice, Thule Flatop 725 - holds 4 snowboards or 6 pair of skis - should be alright too.

Yakima has the Lift ticket 6 (similar to Thule Flatop 725) - also it has the discontinued product called Yakima Ski Wing 3031.

The difference on the Ski Wing 3031 to 3 others above is that - the Ski Wing lets you lay the 4 snowboards flat on the surface. With the Flatop 725, Snowcat 5400, or Lift Ticket 6, you must face two boards together instead of laying flat like the Ski Wing.

Anybody has any experience on these?

I'm partial to Yakima I have a Big Powder Hound(by Yakima)on my Disco and a regular Powder Hound on my Geo Tracker and I love them both. The big hound, can take up to four snow boards or eight skis and they all lay flat. While the regular hound take 2 snow boards or 4 skis. FYI I have the standard Infiniti snow board rack(which stands the boards up and down, very similar to the other racks you mentioned) on my fiance's QX4 and it is so noisy with the boards standing up rather then laying flat. Oh by the way Yakima customer service is great my one rack was two years old and I noticed the handle was cracking, don't know how it happend, but I called the 800 number they gave me the nearest dealer I went there they handed me a new rack and took the old one at no charge.

I decided a Thule 726 Pullout system. This allows pulling the carrier to the side, makes it much easier for loading/unloading the snowboards on my tall DiscoII.

if it means anything... Yakima is american made (Yakima, Washington) and Thule is foreign ....

I have owned both.. they pretty much make exactly the same stuff.. the round cross bars of Yakima products make more noise than the Thule when there is nothing on them.. but its just a personal preference... you can buy either one second hand on Ebay very cheaply.. way to go to get started...

Well it's American owned, not sure if it's american made.

Yakima's quality isnt great. Thule is more superior, sturdy, and looks great too.

I'd stay away from Yakima.

Benny - that is a crock of shit. I own both and they are noth equally crap in thier own ways. I run Thule on a regular basis, but this is not because it is better. My Yakima stuff is older and hold up great. The only advantage I give to Thule is that the square bars tend to be quieter.

Benny,

I would respectfully disagree with your statement. I own both Thule and Yakima products. The major difference between the two are square vs. round bars.

Truthfully, I've found Yakima customer service to be more responsive when compared with Thule. I had to have items warrantied by both companies. Yakima responded right away, whereas Thule required me to initiate contact with them several times to get everything straightened out.

yeah they are both equal. i don't like the round bars at times when the attachments tend to spin on them. otherwise they have the same build quality.

I concur with ema. I have had many Thule and Yak products over the years. They are comparable in quality. Designs tend to be a little different from year to year.

But I will say that I have fully switched to Yakima in the last few years. Their Customer Service is fantastic. I had several back and forth issues on products with Thule and they left me holding the bag on items and hardware that failed, not due to customer misuse mind you. Yak asks no questions and sends replacement parts ASAP.

I have installed the Thule 726 pullout ski rack to the factory crossbars on my DII and am very happy with the fit and operation. The pullout feature is very handy-especially with the height of the Discovery. Depending on the crossbar setup you have, you may need Thule's fatmouth mounting hardware to mount the rack. Check out this site for the 726 http://www.thuleracks.com/thule/product.asp?dept_id=23&sku=726

Again, I would stay away from Yakima. My previous Yakima Powderhound rack lasted only for a year.

The springs holding up the top half collapsed, and the buttons cracked.

I took back to the place where I bought, the guy blamed me for abusive use. How do you abuse the springs? And leaving the rack on the vehicle year-round, through sun and snow - calling it abusive?

Anybody have an explaination for this??

Benny,

Did you give Yakima Customer Service a call? I had trouble with a fork mount bike carrier from Yakima. Gave customer service a call and the carrier was exchanged. Had a similar problem with a Thule fork mount bike carrier. After several calls, they agreed to send me a new block for the carrier. The new block arrived broken and I had to repeat the cycle again.

Also, if one read the reviews comparing Thule and Yakima racks on mtbr.com, they would find that Yakima tends to score higher compared with Thule. There have been cases where people had trouble with Yakima products and they were exchanged no-questions-asked.

JCox, I notice the Disco's roof is sloped past the front sunroof, would there be a problem with binding clearance where this meets?
