Picking up my truck tomorrow after a coupla weeks, numerous 3rd/4th invalid ratio codes, jerky upshifting and grinding downshifting. Got a new MAF sensor, all fluids check out okay, no other problems noted. Here is what my service mgr tells me:

- You *must* have the car off while engaging the CDL in order to disable ETC. Using the CDL with ETC can possibly blow the transmission right out of the car.

- NAS D2s will *never* have the CDL option. In fact, when non-NAS D2s shift to CDL, it disables the ETC in the 2003 MY (yeah, right).

- The codes I'm getting are because of my "oversized" tires. It's confusing the ECUs as wheel speed sensors are disagreeing with trans sensors, so it throws a code.

- If I want a new trans (which I do), he'll have to have some kind of angle to get LRNA to cover under warranty (which expires in two months).

- They will not cover the DC ujoint conversion under warranty, but he is aware of a few transmission being destroyed when these babies go.

So, I figure he's gotta be blowin smoke up my you-know-what. The "plan" is to drive the vehile a bit more, see what happens, then make a plea to LRNA if it keeps happening.

My question is...Can/should I go around him right to LRNA? You guys with "mods" who've had warranty work done, what was your method to get it approved (big stuff like driveline).

Oh, well, he did recommend that I *not* buy the extended warranty as I use the truck and it's got mods and rarely do the extensions cover this situation. I appreciated that candor.

your pleas will fall on deaf ears in 2 months when your warranty expires. since it may take 2 months to get someone to respond, you better start now.

Very interesting.....

"Using the CDL with ETC can possibly blow the transmission right out of the car."

I thought the purpose of ETC was to maintain even torque distribution to the road wheels via the brake system, Not the Drivetrain. When ETC or HDC are enabled, the SLABS ECU will determine that active braking is required or not. If required, the SLABS ECU will operate the individual brakes and slow the wheel(s). Not stop the wheels and not shifting the transmission.

"The codes I'm getting are because of my "oversized" tires. It's confusing the ECUs as wheel speed sensors are disagreeing with trans sensors, so it throws a code."

So which ECU is sensing these oversized tires? Is it the EAT, SLABS, sunroof, ATC, the list goes on..... The SLABS ECU recieves input from each wheel sensor. So tell me, how does the Self Leveling, Anti Lock Braking System know if you have oversized tires? Is it linked with a GPS system to compare vehicle speed against what the speed sensors are sensing? No, I didn't think so. And just how big are these oversized tires? If you are running 265/75 or even 285's, a 3 mph difference whould not confuse your Transmission ECU. If so, then every D2 guy on the planet would constantly be talking about here on DWEB or D2.com.

Mr. Noe, I would recommend finding another dealer. I know it's a PITA, but find someone who understands people who get dirt on their truck. That's one thing I learned the hard way this year living in Philly.

I'm with Paul on finding a new dealer. I had the same problem with my original dealer. They tried telling me that the "over size tires" (at the time they were 245/75's) were the cause of the electrical noise I was getting. Go figure that one out.

Where do you live? Someone here might be able to point you to a better dealer.

Yeah, these are the questions that he can't answer....I'm in Charlottesville, VA. I've tried up in Tyson's Corner, didn't find those guys too trustworthy. We bought the car in Greensboro, it may be worth it to give them a call.

Geez Michael, what a hassle. I think I'd try Alexandria, too. They've been good to me so far, and do seem to understand using the Rover for off-roading. I'm on their email list and recently got an email from one of the staffers who is spending some time wheeling in Moab right now. Give them a try and if you do, tell us how they treat you.

Karen P.S. This thread title sounds like the last six weeks of my life....c'mon New Year!

Michael, FWIW, ditto here to what everyone else has said. Blue is right - with 2 months left on your warranty, don't delay. I hope one of the other dealers will step in and do the job. Try smoozing and be as tactful as possible, but assertive. What your current dealer told you is the biggest load of horsecrap I've heard. I think I would go ballistic, but then again, I don't think that would help with those folks. If you can't get a firm response from another dealership soon, contact LRNA and see if you can get a contact near the top as far as the regional rep chain of command goes. Plead, do whatever you have to do - it's the squeaky wheel that gets the grease. Good luck, and keep us posted.

My '99 D2 is throwing codes too. Dealer says 3rd and 4th gear trans codes....he's gonna look at it next visit....I had a quicky visit the other day for a new radiator. I've got 42,500 miles on the clock, and I'm running 265/75-16 with and OME 2" lift and I've NEVER enaged the CDL.....yet! I'll be watching your thread...

That code is a slip in the trans. Has nothing to do with tires or anything else..

Damn Randy,

You keep going to Mainline this often, you should get a "customer of the month" award from Ron.

Third and forth faults are usually electrical related but can indicate a real trans fault.

In Michael's case you should take the tires and CDL off it and drive it to the next dealer over and complain about the trans. Do it fast so that the info from the last visit does not get in your history. You need a new trans. Any slipping and its screwed. Also complain about a vibe in the front (if you have one) and this should net the new front DS. Stealth is the key, if the truck needs it and it apears stock then they will likely do it.

"- The codes I'm getting are because of my "oversized" tires. It's confusing the ECUs as wheel speed sensors are disagreeing with trans sensors, so it throws a code. "

This is complete BS. The only thing tires cause are steering issues, vibe issues, and your mileage to read low. However, it is always good to make your truck as stock as possible, tires included, for dealer visits when a major issue like a trans is involved.

Offroading the truck is not usually an issue under warranty unless you do something like swamp the engine or bend something underneeth. When it becomes an issues is when you do something that contributes to the fault. For example if your center diff explodes and you have CDL its on you. You run 32s and your PS pump quits its on you. You lift it and the front DS goes its on you. Winch and kill the battery its on you. Irregardless of whether it caused the failure or not it the mods likely contributed. I have found that land rover is never as lienent as individual dealers when covering modded trucks under warranty so that route is usually fruitless.

Also the extended thing is true ANY mods and no coverage. A seperate company runs it for LR and if they inspect they decline coverage based on oversized tires or lift.

Hehe. Well, especially with comments like "...we sure have seen you a lot around here lately..." when picking up the truck.

I barely said a word, they got the msg, doubt if they give a rats ass. I think they realize they won't see me again. Serv mgr would hardly look me in the eye. They know that I know that they know.

Thanks for the ideas folks, I'm pulling my CDL lever out and heading to Alexandria first. Can't do much about the tires, lift and snorkel, however. So much for stealth.

Borrow or trade with someone on the tires temporarily, it is worth it if it means not having to pay for a 5 grand ••••••. Snorkel is a non issue, lift pretty much gaurantys you will not be getting a new Ds under warranty.
