Just got another project.. a 96 Disco WAY below low book.,, with a engine ticking noise. Previous owner blew a head gasket, dealer fixed it and a month later had a ticking noise.

I thought oh.. all the classic symptons of a lifter noise. SIMPLE!! No problem (right)?? NOT!!

Long story short, new lifters, rockers, pushrods and rod bearings later, still ticking.. Too bad it wasn't a Timex watch.. The ticking noise was starting to bug me.. So,, I started tearing apart the motor begining with heads, then pistons, and out came the block. Took everything to machine shop.. Found nothing unusual that would cause a ticking sound.

Found used 4.0 engine with about 50K miles for about 1,200 dollars at local wrecking yard. Installed this weekend and wolla.. Noise gone !!

Now got 96 Disco for almost 40 percent below low book value.. Still a good deal.. So now I'm a happy Disco owner.. Plus, I now know more about a 4.0 rover engine than I ever wanted to know.. Still got one all torn apart..

Funny though,, Wife made fun of me when I bought it, but now I can't get it away from her.. Go figure???

When you replaced the lifters you shoudl also replace the camshaft- if you'd done that you'd have ditched the ticking noise.....FWIW ticking is normal, esp with poor maintenance.

Oh yeah.. I forgot new camshaft too.. Althought I miked the old with the new camshaft and found no difference whatsoever. I don't think it was poor maintenance, the previous owner had all their service records.. It appeared they spent big bucks maintaining the Disco.. all the work done at dealer..

The only thing I saw that was unsual was that one valve stem height was .100 below all the other stems. But I slipped a feeler gage under them while it was running and it didn't stop the ticking, which is why I started to tear the motor apart thinking small end (wristpin) knock.

Thanks...

You could have gotten a 4.0 short block from the dealer cheaper. Series II short block is way, way cheaper and it will work on series I. With a few slight mods. Our dealership does this for our customers to save them a ton of money.

Don't know yet... Right now, I just enjoying driving it.. It's still sitting at the machine shop.. I might put it on ebay with a BIG cavaet..

Hello All..
I'm going to keep some of the parts for spares, but most likely get rid of the block and heads. I still got to pick it up from the machine shop. Regardless, whatever I do.. I'll offer it on DISCOWEB first..

Tim
